Clemson v. Bama in the CFP - Who Do You Pick and Why?

Submitted by xtramelanin on

Mates,

Hopefully next year we'll be watching Michigan play in this game, but for tonight we have the same two teams that played to a 45-40 game last year.

This year 'Bama is a 7 pt favorite and if someone is picking without the points I'm guessing few of us would take Clemson.   That said, whether you are picking with or without the points, who are you taking for tonight's game and why are you picking them?

The way to do that is to secretly fly Rutgers and Wake Forest down there and somehow get them to play as one team or the other (it wouldn't matter which team chose which actual championship team really). When the score is in fact -14 to the square root of -21, it might dawn on people what is going on, but it will be far too late by then to do anything but play out the game.

I still expect it to be very close (decided by less than 7), but this year I see a relatively low-scoring game, rather than the shootout we had in their last matchup.

Alabama - 27

Clemson - 23

I don't know how college basketball fans dealt with UCLA back in the day, because Bama has had similar success for about half the time, and to me it zaps a bit of the suspense and drama out of the game. You just know it's going to be them and three other teams battling in the playoffs every year until Saban retires.

That pitch-action to a QB counter was terrific and usually got Clemson 8 or more yards every time. The one play on a touchdown where they motioned the WR to the other side of the line and then quick pitched it to Gallman was nasty too. OSU's gameplanning strength ain't defense

Clemson gave us joy on New Year's Eve so I'll be rooting for them. It would be an upset despite the weird ESPN doublespeak ("Alabama feels like the underdog because people think there's a nonzero chance they lose a game!"), but Watson has weapons and is the best skill player in the game.

I want Alabama to win so that when we knock them out in the championship game next year and begin our 10 year run of 10 national championships people look back to our victory as the day that changed college football forever...

On my pick em sheet I took Clemson; I actually think they will win.

What helps Michigan the most?

On the recruiting front, Michigan has been involved with an increasing number of battles with both Clemson and Alabama.  I feel like Bama winning another championship isn't going to move the needle much for them in recruiting as they have been on top for what seems like forever already and Clemson has a lot more to gain as they haven't won a national chamionship since their first and only in 1981.

Can't stand either team but I'm going with Bama and potentially avoiding tougher recruitng battles with Clemson.

Bama just does not look good on offense. I know they score a lot of points but they have played nobody and it seems pretty vanilla. Hurts is a freshman (despite playing like a senior all year) and I have a feeling that he will make one too many freshman mistakes tonight.

Dabo Swinny is a slimeball that quotes the Bible while paying off recruits under the table.

I still hope he kicks Alabama's ass.

but only because I dislike Saban a bit less than I dislike Dabo.

I'd pick Alabama in another close game, but I wouldn't be surprised at all to see Clemson win.

Hate both but Bama will win they have and insurmountable cheating advantage. Seriously is Saban just light years beyond anyone else in CFB or is there another factor here? I think Alabama is running a steroid fueled program that is giving them a distinct edge.

Bama's D is crazy good/athletic.  They are built to stop an offense like Clemson.  Another high scoring game: DarthLord 38 - EverymansDabo 31

I would love to see Alabama lose but I don't like Clemson either. 4+ hours of listening to Herbstreit and endless commercials sounds excruciating as well. Put me down for the giant meteor. I may have to watch the Bachelor instead.

I think that Bama wins.

I'll also add that I think that Bama winning is better for us than if Clemson wins. Our main head to heads recently for top end talent seem to be Bama, Clemson, and Ohio State (Georgia might get up there too, but let's leave at these three for the sake of discussion). Bama has won recently. Ohio State has won recently. Clemson has not. Now, if Clemson wins, isn't that a feather in their cap recruiting against us? I would say so and that would leave three of our major recruiting rivals with recent national titles.

Bama has won and has a reputation of success. I don't think them winning again would really change anything recruiting wise.

I take Clemson because they have a really good defensive line, a more dynamic offense, and changing your OC a week out isn't optimal regardless of the guy who steps in.

they can hold up in the trenches and match Alabama's speed on the edge. And I like Watson's chances to make a game clinching play in the 4th quarter a bit more than Hurts'. And because Alabama bores me to tears.

I find Dabo to be so incredibly disingenuous, self-righteous, and contrived. Every time he does a post game it reminds me of Kevin Garnett's "ANYTHING'S POSSIBLE!!!" that said, fuck bama.

I am hopeful Clemson gets it done this year.  I generally like underdogs on big stages.  Couple that with their loss to 'Bama last year, and I think they have enough to get it done.  I think there is something to be said on switching OC's right before the NC too.  I believe Watson will be stellar on his final game as a collegiate QB.

Screw 'Bama.

is one of the few QB's that cna actually match up (not get completely destroyed) by Bama's defense, because he is a true dual threat - accurate pocket passer and elusive runner / scrambler.  For this reason, Clemson is maybe the only team in the country that can neutralize Bama's superiority in talent along the defensive front 7.

Thats said, he will need to play a perfect turnover free or close game to handle them.  On the other side of the ball, I don't know enough about Clemson's D-line to assess how they will hold up against Bama's run game for 4 quarters.  In it until the half, definitely, but can they hold up for 4 quarters? - Not sure as I know they lost some talent to the NFL.

I'll go with Clemson because I think the freshman Hurts can get flustered, where Watson is tested, but I would not at all be surprised to see Bama start trucking them by the 4th quarter behind the giant O-line and beast running game.

Bama wins if they run the ball 65% of the time or more and doesn't turn it over. I'm guessing they have 2 turnovers.

Clemson wins if they can sustain some longer drives that keeps their D-line rested. I think they will.

I've been saying Clemson all year - they were arguably the better team last year but lacked the experience. All year, they've been waiting for this. They have the atheletes, they have by far the better QB. A good defense (that can stop the run) will expose Alabama's offense. I think Clemson will win, and I think it won't be that close. Prediction:

Clemson: 31

Alabama: 13

Looking forward to Saban retiring so that Dabo can be named the next Alabama HC... It's going to take a full blown NCAA investigation into recruiting violations and impermissible benefits to derail that train. In the meantime just have to match their talent as best as possible and then out-coach them.

I think Bama wins because their defense will limit what Clemson can do.  I'm not taking anything away from Jalen Hurts, but if you can run out a freshman at QB and still win most of your games handily, your defense is lights out.  All their offense has to do is not screw it up.

Pulling for Clemson tonight not because I like them; just tired of "SEC, SEC, SEC" crap the rest of conference will shout to the rest of the nation if Bama wins.

Despite what happens tonight, Ohio State will be the only bowl team in 2016-17 not to dent the scoreboard.

I think we can all agree that this is worth celebrating.

They've already been embarrased, that job has been done. The talk about Bama winning making us look better isn't really significant because it won't change anything when it comes to people's perception of us and Ohio State. Bama is really good so Clemson losing is so expected it wouldn't make Ohio State look bad. And no result of this game will make people think any different of us. Not to mention that Bama winning is not worth that small amount of embarrassment toward Ohio State.

I'm getting real tired of Bama. Saban can't retire soon enough (although I don't want that to open the door for Mr. Meyer and the Buckeyes...here's hoping for some family time and a move to ND)
