Class of 2020 Instant Contributors

Now that end of year all-star games are in the books, who do you see as being a potential instant on field contributor in 2020?

Really liked Mullings yesterday... Great speed and athleticism and was mentioned he was even being recruited as RB by other power 5 teams.

It wouldn't surprise me to see Corum play a role because he's so different from our other backs. I could also see Henning playing some kind of role because he's so electric. Out of necessity we may need to play one of the CBs as well.

You know what, I agree on Mullings. He looked like the best LB out there at times. Having said that, he will either redshirt or play special teams mostly. I look for some safeties to play, and the WR's but other than that, I don't see anyone making an immediate impact. Unless there is a ton of attrition the depth chart is looking pretty damn good.

Henning given DPJs departure.

Beyond that one of the guys at CB or LB maybe.

Def not o-line,qb, safety, or d-line. RB maybe but that’s a loaded room and waste of a redshirt

In order of instant impact, my prediction would be:

  1. Henning
  2. Seldon
  3. Mullings
  4. Corum
  5. Wilson
  6. DGW

I think Henning is going to be a star right away, although it will be hard to get a ton of touches behind the guys he will be behind.

I think Seldon and Mullings are too good at spots that are thin to not play. Seldon could be a top three corner for us next year and the top guy in the Nickel - size be damned, he's a player. Similar thought on Mullings, but no size issue. He needs a little weight, but not a ton - he could make the two deep.

I think Corum and Wilson are similar to each other as well - two guys who enter somewhat deep position groups, but just have too much speed to redshirt. They'll play.

DGW might just be a factor of positional depth. I think the biggest thing with him is going to be the weight room. He needs to change his body comp and getting stronger, otherwise he's a great prospect. Good natural size, very instinctual and willing to hit, but adding muscle mass and training will help his speed, which should round him out as a player.

Seldon to cover slot guys since he seemed very quick twitch and good speed. Mullings seems like he will be in the rotation, especially by the end of the year due to his pure athleticism. Corum seems like he will also be in the rotation, especially due to his explosiveness as well. And Henning seems like he should get into the rotation as well with showing his willingness to block in the all star game. I could see one or two other guys getting some run late or on special teams as well

I think Mullings has a shot at some decent playing time, he reminded me of Devin Bush in his sideline to sideline ability to get to the ball and looks like a sure tackler as well

Corum impresses me, I think he'll get some work in too.

Anyone else is a total guess, it all depends on what they show in spring ball and preseason practice, obviously.

EDIT:

I'd like to see Wilson & Seldon maybe get a chance to run back punts or KO's along with Giles Jackson, take advantage of that speed.

This is fun...I love hypothetical threads like this over the bitching we get 90% of the time (oops).

I'll rank them in order.

  1. Andre Seldon - BOWL HYPE!!!
  2. AJ Henning - Position of need.
  3. Blake Corum - Offers something different at the RB position.
  4. Roman Wilson - Position of need, may help on special teams as well.
  5. Braiden McGregor - Injured now, too talented not to get his 4 games.
  6. Kalel Mullings - Exceptional range, speed, he's the next one after McGrone...special teams are garbage snaps next year.
  7. Makari Paige - Maybe some special teams, definitely gets his 4 games, maybe more.
    --------------Redshirt line-------------
  8. RJ Moten - 4 games.
  9. Matthew Hibner - 4 games.
  10. Eamonn Dennis - Maybe some special teams.
  11. Darion Green-Warren - 4 games.
--------------Redshirt for sure, may get 4 games-------------
  12. Jaylen Harrell - Maybe some backup snaps in the Uche role.
  13. Osman Savage
  14. Cornell Wheeler
  15. Aaron Lewis
  16. Nikhai Hill-Green
  17. William Mohan
  18. Jordan Morant
--------------Redshirt for sure, may get a game or 2-------------
  19. Zak Zinter
  20. Reece Atteberry
  21. Kris Jenkins
  22. Jeffrey Persi
  23. Dan Villari

Corum and Henning are likely to see time on offense. Wilson too, especially if Nico leaves. Maybe Hibner, especially if there is an injury at TE.
On defense, DGW and Seldon are both likely to see the field, IMO. Mullings has the tools to contribute right away. Moten, Paige, or Morant will find some time.
Cyclically, next years team is going to be more experienced and will need less help from freshmen. It’s less about the 2020 class and more about the current depth chart.

It'd be great if (and M needs) the CBs to come in and compete (especially if Ambry decides to leave), but Corum and Henning seem the most likely out of the gate.  Even with one guy named after Superman.  Hopefully the CBs grow into solid performers quickly to add depth.

Thinking about the question, what really struck me is how OP's title could have been for football and basketball.  And hockey.

As disappointing as it may be that M hasn't moved from pretty good to elite in football, we're still pretty lucky to have both revenue sports be 'in the conversation' as often as not.

I do wish Uche would stay another year, but I certainly don't begrudge any of these guys trying to make hay when they can.  We should hope all these recruits have the option to leave early as first or second rounders.

1. Henning & Wilson - too much speed and Gattis will expand #speedinspace

2. Seldon - position of need and too good in the slot

3. Corum - all depends on Evans, but Corum gets a couple touches a game

A bunch of guys (especially LBs and DBs) will get spot duty on special teams to get used to the speed and physicality before they are really fighting for 2021 time.

OFFENSE:

1. Henning Wr,

2. Corum Rb

3. Hibner Te, Special teams

4. Wilson Wr, Special teams

DEFENSE: A lot depends on what the coaching staff does with guys in front of this class, Quinton Johnson & Anthony Solomon, etc. Johnson is athletic enough to play corner and Solomon could move to middle or will linebacker.

1. Seldon @ Nb

2. Morant @ Viper, special teams

3. Mullings, Special teams, middle or Will linebacker

4. Moten, Special teams Safety

5. Mohan, Special teams, Viper

6. Savage, Special teams, Shark linebacker

7. Page, Special teams, Safety

I would say Corum but I think Evans is going to get the lightning back touches - he can do the slot-motion-into-RB and back out thing, was made for it.  He has enough speed to be the lightning back Michigan needs against the two thunders.  I think we're all going to love seeing him back next year.

Seldon is the answer I think, he looks like a playmaker at nickel.

I really like Roman Wilson as well, but don't see enough opportunity to have an instant impact role with what Michigan has coming back.  He looks like a Bell+ player, but junior Ronnie is going to be really good.

Let’s hope Gattis keeps Evans focused on speed training, not “getting tougher” (aka fat).

Back in the late 90s, we had a back out of Cass Tech named Clarence Williams (he was “the starter” in most games in Brady’s first year as the QB). When he first showed up on campus his nickname was “The Blur” — dude was quick, quick, quick ... and fast.  As time went on, our S&C thickened him up, and in the process he lost just about every physical trait that made him special. On that ‘98 team (his senior year), he was incredibly pedestrian. It was actually sad to watch.

Coming out of winter conditioning I hope we see fast/shifty Evans, not manball Evans.  And I hope that for his sake, even more than ours.
