Cincy fluff article on HOW they'll beat Michigan

Submitted by Blue 4 Life on

I'm a homer but this goes beyond anything I could have ever come up with. This idiot that writes for Cincy actually is picking them to beat Michigan by a score of 34-31.

He highlights portions that say they "MIchigan " Got By " Florida and spelled out that the Bearcats held back against Austin Peay so they wouldn't give up their playbook.

Once you comb through the hype, it wasn’t a blow-out win or even that impressive of a win over Florida. Think about it. The Gators were actually up at the half 17-13, and only trailed Michigan by nine with under two to play in the fourth quarter.  With 1:37 left in the fourth, Florida QB Malik Zaire failed to secure the ball dropping back out of the shotgun into his own end zone. Michigan’s defense caused Zaire to fumble and recovered it for a touchdown bringing the score to 33-17. It was a close game, despite that Florida failed to score an offensive touchdown, suspended ten of its best players, and Florida was prevented from fully preparing because of Jim Harbaugh’s late-roster-release-weak-sauce-move.

This is some funny $hit

"Florida was prevented from fully preparing because of Jim Harbaugh’s late-roster-release-weak-sauce-move"

First of all, the move didn't actually prevent Florida from fully preparing.  But, if it had, then Harbaugh's move gave Michigan a competitive advantage.  Since when is gaining a competitive advantage a "weak-sauce-move"?

Yeah, me neither.

I love how "Florida failed to score an offensive touchdown" is a rationale. Granted, Florida likely has a bad offense by objective measures, but to pretend that they were bad all by themselves is stupid. It takes two to tango, or something like that.

See, I disagree there. Cincy has several things Florida does not: 1) a QB who knows the system and has experience 2) a QB with the documented ability to throw a TD pass this year 3) an OC who is not Coach Nuss 4) full knowledge of what they're walking into, so they know their only prayer is chucking the ball and hoping for a miracle 5) their HC is not an alleged shark humper. He probably prepped for this game All of this to say I bet Cincy scores at least one TD.

Obviously pandering to his readers. They will get whooped and Speight will play great at home. Hoke beat Fickell, Harbaugh will roast him.

Being a Bearcat and Wolverine makes this an interesting matchup for me. I think UM wins 38-17 but UC looks like a different team in week 2 and plays up to the competition for at least the 1st half...then UM talent / depth help Michigan cruise to a victory in the second half.

To beat Michigan you have to be able to manage the game and run the football (in Harbaugh's 6 losses at UM the average rushing yards for the opposing team is 180 yards). Easier said than done - Michigan defense had as many tackles for loss (11) as Florida had rushing yards last week.

If Cincinnati finds a way to win time of possession, rush for 150+ yards, and Moore tests Michigan's secondary (weakest unit on the team IMHO) then there is a small chance at this game being close late in the 4th quarter. Early last season when UM was beating teams badly (Hawaii by 60, UCF by 37, Penn State by 39, Rutgers by 78, etc) Michigan was running the ball 50 times and controlling the clock. Against Florida last week, Michigan ran the ball 49 times and controlled the clock. Iowa beat Michigan last year 14-13 by winning time of possession, rushed for 168 yards and won the turnover battle...Cincinnati would have to pull off a similar trifecta on the road, hence the 34 1/2 point spread.

Another quote from this sportswriting gem:

"As Coach Fickell observed, the Wolverines’ backfield is deep and of a higher quality than the Governors’ backfield."

Well, yeah, an observation about as obvious as, say, "the NE Patriots QB is of a higher quality than the Cleveland Browns scout team QB."  Good lord!

Enough of this drivvel --- just skin the Bearcats and nail their hides to the barn door. Go Blue.

I actually read 2 pieces on ESPN comment section where fans (possible author of this article) were saying the exact same thing.

Edit: Very commical stuff

First commentor:

"UC was holding back against Austin Peay. Michigan will have a hard time keeping UC off the field, plus they have the better coach. Michigan will keep it close but UC wins 34 - 28."

"Todd Morgan, great analysis nerd. Did you watch Michigan on Saturday?? Had their hands full with the Gators JV."

"I'm surprised they are even playing? Michigans basketball team ran and hid last year to abound playing the Cats. Props to the football team for at least not backing out! I think it will be a good game, I just can't see Michigan winning? That's why they play the games tho."

"You are obviously handicapped dude?!? You really think Michigan will win??"

Second commentor:

"Clearly Michigan homers who've probably never watched a Bearcat game. UC 35 UM 17"

"Jacob Berry how many pick 6 do Michigan throw against a team with 10 suspended starters? They're exposed and UC had to find their rhythm under a new coach. We'll revisit this next Saturday."

"Taurean Thomas 7 of the 10 were guaranteed starters, which included the leading WR & RB, if you actually knew football then you'd know how the line is impacted when top weapons are out. We can debate football all day but y'all don't know the game so you're reduced to throwing out childish insults. Like I said before, we'll revisit this on Saturday."

"Jacob Berry do you even know any of UC's players? We ranked 11th in interceptions and 6th in tackles last year."
