Chris Balas on Brandon Peters: "There are recruiting mistakes, and this appears to have been a big one."

Submitted by Maizen on

Meanwhile Michigan had 4 passing yards in the 2nd half vs IU. I don't really know what to say about this if true, but thought it was extremely noteworthy.

Let me preface this by pointing out that I have NO inside info on Peters (like several of the other posters seem to have).  I've seen him throw one pass against Purdue (I didn't even see the Spring game, that so many of you refer to).

However, here's my 2 cents.  He was rated very high coming out of high school, but if I recall correctly, his offer list was not overly impressive.  I think Iowa, Indiana and Wisconsin were our "biggest" competitors for his commitment.  He committed to Michigan after Jim had only been here a few months.

Now...I could be wrong on this, but quarterbacks usually have a long courtship by a school and generally commit fairly early (then they sort of become a recruiter themselves, trying to real in guys in the same class).  With Jim only being here a few months, he hadn't had a chance to develop relationships with the most sought after QBs in the country.   Brandon Peters was perhaps the "best" Jim could real in after only being here a short time.

Like I said, I have no idea if Peters will be a complete bust or the next Tom Brady....I'm just offering a possible reason why maybe he isn't ready (or...possibly never will be).  Maybe there's a reason the very top schools didn't offer him...

Here's to hoping he's the next Tom Brady :):)

a "recruiting mistake" with a QB is something more like Ryan Mallet, where you skip taking a QB to clear the depth chart around one kid. To say that about a RS Freshman when you took a borderline 5 star right behind him seems unwarranted. Even if it never works out, I don't think it's right to imply that Peters would be some wholly unique disappointment than the typical 4 star guy that doesn't live up to the hype. (unless quits or gets kicked off the team)

3 picks against MSU, missing wide open receivers because he always throws to the first option even if double covered. Can Peters hand the ball off?

if you evolve to run a modified spread with your own type of personnel the QB doesn’t have to be Tom Brady.

We know Jim can adjust. He did it with SF and made it to a superbowl with Kapp

Quit betting on drop back passers based on HS film and perceived IQ. Get three decent guys who can run and hit the deep ball when wide open in case someone gets hurt or doesn’t pan out.

Saban Adjusted and is winning with young QBs—freshmen. Meyer is even adjusting bringing in Wilson and has won with young QBs. Also Occasionally flip the play calling and don’t be so darn predictable. The staff will figure this out eventually. I hope.

is to win the rushing battle..we have to run run run then be acurate on short passing situations to move the chain..and NO DAMM turnovers..and less than 5 penalties would help

There's this weird perception that Peters played well in the spring game. He didn't. He hit a wide open Gentry on one play and that's it. Go watch the 6-minute Peters spring game every snap video on Youtube and tell me you still think he played well.

The offensive coaching staff is in shambles and it has been going on for almost 3 years now, Jake ruddock was a 5th year senior and the offense didn’t click for him until game 13, it still hasn’t clicked for Speight or JOK, we keep hearing Peters isn’t ready, this isn’t on the QBs it’s on the coaching staff, I hate to point fingers but all signs point to Drevno.

In watching some of the 53-28 Georgia blowout of Mizzou last night I was impressed with both QBs. Freshman Jake Fromm was a 4-5 star recruit, a Georgia kid, and pretty much a sure thing to end up at UGA. Same with junior Drew Lock -- a Missouri kid whose father played football at Missouri, and so on --- point being, not much a chance of M recruiting either one of them. But both have great pocket presence; accurate, rifle arms; and  "command of the huddle." Even with M's pass pro (which really isn't all that bad), could either of them surpass 10 of 20 for 58 yards in an entire game? --- very definitely. Also, after starting GA QB Jacob Eason went down with an injury coach Kirby Smart replaced him with Fromm and, given Fromm's performance since, never looked back --- Eason's now the backup.

These are just two very good young QBs; there have to be others "out there" whom Coach Jim could recruit and coach up at Michigan. Both Fromm and Lock are clearly better than Speight ever was, and compared with O'Korn? Well, no comment. Whatever the reasons Peters isn't seeing the field, they must be pretty serious.

I'm not sure Peters was his first choice, but Harbaugh went for the best he could. Some higher rated QBs went elsewhere for who knows what reasons. McCaffrey is probably as close to a lock to be good as you will ever get, he just needs a year to get stronger.

Chris Balas’ podcast would be unlistenable if it weren’t for the recruiting coverage he has from guests. Balas himself has the thickest maize and blue glasses I’ve ever seen and lacks credibility IMO. I’ll believe this when I hear it from a credible source.

Peters is getting thrown under the bus for no reason in this article. To me this seems like the staff is getting heat for not playing him, and instead of letting him play they’re leaking to the media that he’s a bad player/dude.

I think the reason people are reaching / praying that Peters is ready is that it's the only reasonable outcome that doesn't make the coaches look like idiots. Think of the other possibilities: 1) Speight regressed in a year instead of improved and OKorn literally hasn't improved since he left Houston - what does that say about our QB guru if that's true and he can't bring Peters or McCaffery along, even early in their careers? I know freshmen and RS freshmen QBs are generally bad but out QB situation currently isn't bad, it's non-functional. Or 2) Peters was a huge bust and the staff whiffed on the most important QB recruit given the current depth chart and we just have to wait until the younger guys are ready before we have an offense, and who knows when that happens? Or 3) Peters really is ready and the coaches are too dumb/loyal/etc to realize it. (To be clear I'm not saying that all of these are the case but unless Peters gets the start and looks good, one of them is probably true - and so that's the only possible good outcome here, hence people are pining for it to be the case. Everything else is a disaster and largely on the coaches) And to the insider types, I would stop posting vague info about this situation, either post exactly what's going on or leave it alone. I've already seen earlier in the thread people jumping to conclusions about a kid's character that you've had to correct, no reason to start people speculating about the players like that, I don't think it accomplishes anything

This. There are a lot of people on here who may be scared of what this means because it would destroy their vision of what has been expected. I hope this situation gets better because we have our dream coach and some good classes in. For me personally, I haven't seen the results of JH's reputation as a QB whisperer but then again, I was never fully in awe of that to begin with. I think not enough credit is given to the players like Luck and Kaepernick for their own success. We'll see as we move forward but as it stands now, if I am a high school QB looking for my college, I am not placing Michigan first on that list, certainly if a guy like Peters isn't getting a shot following a 58 yard (4 ins the second half) shitshow against Inidana. Even though it may not be true, it tells me as a recruit that not only do I need to have the ultimate talent and accomplishments, but now I may have to overcome my coaches as well, some who may be willing to leak to others that I am not good enough even though I haven't even started a game. Not a good look.

Why go to a school like that when you have Georgia, Washington, USC, etc? Why if you're a top 5 star recruit, would you choose to go somewhere where it is claimed that the offense is so complicated that you would not touch the field until your third year at best?

People always want some overarching reason why the team isn't running through people on the way to the NC. QB, OL, Coaching. It's a multitude of reasons. If the OL and skill players were more expierenced JOK would look better, if JOK was more expierenced, the skill players would look better. If Peters was not a recruiting bust and so forth. Nobody is playing great because it takes time to build a damn offense. And this offene is young. Do people forgot how much was lost?

It's football, and there's rarely a single easy fix. It's a learning curve and it comes with expierence. Even if Peters played the level of Henne or someone similiar, this offense would be an issue.

Also, all said and done, this team is 5-1, and most of these young players are showing flashes.

My problem - and maybe it makes me one of those Michigan fans that people say they hate every 3-4 comments or so - is that our offense is not merely young or mediocre, it's actually quite bad. S&P+ has us at 76 which tends to be near the bottom of the Power 5. If we were 50 or so - still pretty bad - I would chalk it up to youth and growing pains. But we're worse than that. We're hanging out near the likes of the following: Wake Forest (actually 4 spots better than us at 72), Virginia (not sure this is a good comp actually as they are 18 spots better than us at 58), Florida (yes, that Florida, at 83), Fresno State (at 69), and Northwestern (at 73). I get taking a step back and being mediocre but this feels like something a little worse / more fundamental than that.

Are we as bad as the QB play? Are we 10 for 20 with 58 yards bad?

I get it. Nothing in life is perfect. No one is perfect. We all make mistakes. Even the great Jim Harbaugh.

But  this offense is BAD.

As for Peters. We have no idea if he's truly a bust because he has yet to be seen in a live game. For all we know, this is the type of kid that truly shines during a game (wouldn't we all love to see that routinely on a Saturday).

But if his attitude doesn't jive with Harbaugh, he may never see the field.

And that's the trials and tribulations of recruiting.

D1 QB than just being able to throw a nice spiral.  There's leadership abilities, film study, ability to grasp complicated defensive alignments.  To say nothing of the immense commitment and sacrifice it takes in the weight room and off-season workouts.

I have only heard Peters struggles with the leadership part and taking command.  Peters is also a 19 year old kid who might develop into a fine QB some day.  I trust Harbaugh here if he doesn't think Peters is ready, he's not readly.

And if McCafrey is ahead of him on the depth chart and clearly the future of the QB spot  I would also understand being unwilling to burn that redshirt

I agree, but O'Korn's intangibles, hell even Speight's, at times dont outweight their poor physical ability/outcomes. At some point yiu have to be abke to make basic reads and plays. Not saykng Peters will be better, but we are atbthe time to see or very near the time to see. O'Korn missed WAY too many easy reads and throws yesterday.

DCGrad

October 15th, 2017 at 12:34 PM ^

I don't think we lose to Rutgers, Minnesota, or MD no matter who is QB. With O'Korn in the game I don't think we beat PSU, Wiscy, or OSU. What is the downside to making a QB change and giving Peters something to build off of for next season?

O'Korn is completeing is completing 55% of his passes and has a 4-1 Int to TD ratio.

I get not STARTING Peters for the PSU game but there is no reason that the coaches can't script a 10-15 play drive for him, rep it all week in pratice, then insert Peters into the game at some point to see what he can do. If it goes well, ride the hot hand. If it goes poorly, then we're fucked either way. If O'Korn is lighting it up, then don't put Peters in. But I highly doubt Peters is too incompetent to see the field based on the QB play we've seen from O'Korn so far this season.

I'm pretty tired of parsing the prophecies of the oracle of Umbig11. If you have info but you can't share it, then just don't say anything. The whole, "he's got the most talent, but he isn't good at football, but Harbaugh values many things and has expectations, but he was behind DM, but now he isn't" line of posts, plus the ensuing hermeneutics, are just pointless. At least the other supposed insider made a straightforward claim. It might be bullshit, but at least I know what he said.

Its over for this year. Penn State is gonna bang Jimmy doggy style. After next weekend’s humiliation there will be nothing left to play for, at which points we may as well throw Peters to the wolves to see if we can get a better reault. I do blame JH for not being able to recruit and develop a QB three years into his tenure. Speight and Okorn are upperclassmen. You have to do better than 58 passing yards. Their output reveals a level of incompetence and deficiency not seen at Michigan since Nick Sheridan. Now we know why we have 2 QB’s signed for the 2018 class. And both are projects as opposed to proven commodities. McCaffrey is the guy.

I could only get halfway through, but 2 things seem clear: Balas is simply trying to stir the pot; and Harbaugh has a long checklist of expectations for his starter, and JOK ticks more of those boxes than Peters does. It seems premature to be throwing the word "bust" out there, but I'm very curious to see the depth chart next year, especially if Wilton is physically unable to perform.

Peters was droppin dimes in the spring game. He must have pissed off the big man pretty good. Okorn is who he is, frustrating as shit, but he’s giving it his all. It’s gonna make us grind our teeth for the rest of the year but give him props for battling. If he just reads the field like 20% better he is getting chunks of yards. They are there, typically wide open, if he can just find those plays a bit more these games are very different. Keep fighting.
