I think Harbaugh does know.

Gets killed, but in the meantime you get one of the two kids ready to start against Rutgers the week after at home.

Let me preface this by pointing out that I have NO inside info on Peters (like several of the other posters seem to have). I've seen him throw one pass against Purdue (I didn't even see the Spring game, that so many of you refer to).
However, here's my 2 cents. He was rated very high coming out of high school, but if I recall correctly, his offer list was not overly impressive. I think Iowa, Indiana and Wisconsin were our "biggest" competitors for his commitment. He committed to Michigan after Jim had only been here a few months.
Now...I could be wrong on this, but quarterbacks usually have a long courtship by a school and generally commit fairly early (then they sort of become a recruiter themselves, trying to real in guys in the same class). With Jim only being here a few months, he hadn't had a chance to develop relationships with the most sought after QBs in the country. Brandon Peters was perhaps the "best" Jim could real in after only being here a short time.
Like I said, I have no idea if Peters will be a complete bust or the next Tom Brady....I'm just offering a possible reason why maybe he isn't ready (or...possibly never will be). Maybe there's a reason the very top schools didn't offer him...
Here's to hoping he's the next Tom Brady :):)

Peters committed on 4/30/15...just 4 months after Jim arrived.

think Peters will be okay, but that list isn't really a bunch of schools who typically have great qb's...

Wow. Take another look at his offer list and the senior year he had after becoming a Michigan commit.

We know Jim can adjust. He did it with SF and made it to a superbowl with Kapp
Quit betting on drop back passers based on HS film and perceived IQ. Get three decent guys who can run and hit the deep ball when wide open in case someone gets hurt or doesn’t pan out.
Saban Adjusted and is winning with young QBs—freshmen. Meyer is even adjusting bringing in Wilson and has won with young QBs. Also Occasionally flip the play calling and don’t be so darn predictable. The staff will figure this out eventually. I hope.

is to win the rushing battle..we have to run run run then be acurate on short passing situations to move the chain..and NO DAMM turnovers..and less than 5 penalties would help

In watching some of the 53-28 Georgia blowout of Mizzou last night I was impressed with both QBs. Freshman Jake Fromm was a 4-5 star recruit, a Georgia kid, and pretty much a sure thing to end up at UGA. Same with junior Drew Lock -- a Missouri kid whose father played football at Missouri, and so on --- point being, not much a chance of M recruiting either one of them. But both have great pocket presence; accurate, rifle arms; and "command of the huddle." Even with M's pass pro (which really isn't all that bad), could either of them surpass 10 of 20 for 58 yards in an entire game? --- very definitely. Also, after starting GA QB Jacob Eason went down with an injury coach Kirby Smart replaced him with Fromm and, given Fromm's performance since, never looked back --- Eason's now the backup.
These are just two very good young QBs; there have to be others "out there" whom Coach Jim could recruit and coach up at Michigan. Both Fromm and Lock are clearly better than Speight ever was, and compared with O'Korn? Well, no comment. Whatever the reasons Peters isn't seeing the field, they must be pretty serious.

This. There are a lot of people on here who may be scared of what this means because it would destroy their vision of what has been expected. I hope this situation gets better because we have our dream coach and some good classes in. For me personally, I haven't seen the results of JH's reputation as a QB whisperer but then again, I was never fully in awe of that to begin with. I think not enough credit is given to the players like Luck and Kaepernick for their own success. We'll see as we move forward but as it stands now, if I am a high school QB looking for my college, I am not placing Michigan first on that list, certainly if a guy like Peters isn't getting a shot following a 58 yard (4 ins the second half) shitshow against Inidana. Even though it may not be true, it tells me as a recruit that not only do I need to have the ultimate talent and accomplishments, but now I may have to overcome my coaches as well, some who may be willing to leak to others that I am not good enough even though I haven't even started a game. Not a good look.
Why go to a school like that when you have Georgia, Washington, USC, etc? Why if you're a top 5 star recruit, would you choose to go somewhere where it is claimed that the offense is so complicated that you would not touch the field until your third year at best?

People always want some overarching reason why the team isn't running through people on the way to the NC. QB, OL, Coaching. It's a multitude of reasons. If the OL and skill players were more expierenced JOK would look better, if JOK was more expierenced, the skill players would look better. If Peters was not a recruiting bust and so forth. Nobody is playing great because it takes time to build a damn offense. And this offene is young. Do people forgot how much was lost?
It's football, and there's rarely a single easy fix. It's a learning curve and it comes with expierence. Even if Peters played the level of Henne or someone similiar, this offense would be an issue.
Also, all said and done, this team is 5-1, and most of these young players are showing flashes.October 15th, 2017 at 12:39 PM ^
My problem - and maybe it makes me one of those Michigan fans that people say they hate every 3-4 comments or so - is that our offense is not merely young or mediocre, it's actually quite bad. S&P+ has us at 76 which tends to be near the bottom of the Power 5. If we were 50 or so - still pretty bad - I would chalk it up to youth and growing pains. But we're worse than that. We're hanging out near the likes of the following: Wake Forest (actually 4 spots better than us at 72), Virginia (not sure this is a good comp actually as they are 18 spots better than us at 58), Florida (yes, that Florida, at 83), Fresno State (at 69), and Northwestern (at 73). I get taking a step back and being mediocre but this feels like something a little worse / more fundamental than that.

Michigan fans continue to be the absolute worst. Also, fuck rivals.

Are we as bad as the QB play? Are we 10 for 20 with 58 yards bad?
I get it. Nothing in life is perfect. No one is perfect. We all make mistakes. Even the great Jim Harbaugh.
But this offense is BAD.
As for Peters. We have no idea if he's truly a bust because he has yet to be seen in a live game. For all we know, this is the type of kid that truly shines during a game (wouldn't we all love to see that routinely on a Saturday).
But if his attitude doesn't jive with Harbaugh, he may never see the field.
And that's the trials and tribulations of recruiting.
October 15th, 2017 at 12:27 PM ^
D1 QB than just being able to throw a nice spiral. There's leadership abilities, film study, ability to grasp complicated defensive alignments. To say nothing of the immense commitment and sacrifice it takes in the weight room and off-season workouts.
I have only heard Peters struggles with the leadership part and taking command. Peters is also a 19 year old kid who might develop into a fine QB some day. I trust Harbaugh here if he doesn't think Peters is ready, he's not readly.
And if McCafrey is ahead of him on the depth chart and clearly the future of the QB spot I would also understand being unwilling to burn that redshirt

I don't think we lose to Rutgers, Minnesota, or MD no matter who is QB. With O'Korn in the game I don't think we beat PSU, Wiscy, or OSU. What is the downside to making a QB change and giving Peters something to build off of for next season?
O'Korn is completeing is completing 55% of his passes and has a 4-1 Int to TD ratio.
I get not STARTING Peters for the PSU game but there is no reason that the coaches can't script a 10-15 play drive for him, rep it all week in pratice, then insert Peters into the game at some point to see what he can do. If it goes well, ride the hot hand. If it goes poorly, then we're fucked either way. If O'Korn is lighting it up, then don't put Peters in. But I highly doubt Peters is too incompetent to see the field based on the QB play we've seen from O'Korn so far this season.
