A Chance to See Antoine Joubert Play Basketball Again
Along with Michael Talley and Willie Mitchell.
Just saw this on Facebook. A whole bunch of Detroit PSL legends are getting together for a charity game on April 27. Check out some of the names of those rosters.
The Judge will be 55 in April, but OH HELL YEAH I'm going to be there.

DAMMIT! That's the flyer for last year's game. This year's game will be on April 18 at Detroit Edison Public School Academy. The rosters haven't been released yet, but I'm hoping the Judge will return.

Damn, that West team is stacked! Would love to see this.

Tolbert and Tally lived on my hall freshman year. (They were never there.) Be cool to see them play again if I lived near Detroit.

It appears they were there, but were playing video games and I heard it was A LOT of video games.
January 29th, 2020 at 1:09 PM ^
And I mean it was A LOT. Of video games.

Michael Talley and Tony Tolbert lived on my floor one year at West Quad. They played A LOT of video games, and I mean, A LOT. (Meanwhile, my roommate and I played a couple thousand games of table top hockey.)
Tolbert was one of those high school legends who never quite made it at UofM. He transferred to UofD and put up 20 and 23 ppg seasons.

Tolbert was a guy that wanted to play 30+ minutes and jack up (at least) 15-20 shots. With the Fab Five coming, that wasn't going to happen and UD gave him the opportunity to jack it up.
Michael Talley stuck around and saw his role decrease dramatically when the Fab Five came on board. Talley was in a poli sci class of mine. He showed up to every section and participated as much as most students. He seemed to take his classes pretty seriously.

The winners will play the west side's team lead by Garde Thompson...

. . . and Loy Vaught

Also--am I allowed to say this?? Don't really 'get' the Kobe tribute. For one thing, he never played college ball. At least in the NBA the shot clock is 24 seconds, he wore number 24 and also 8...so...yeah. But how does a 10 second midcourt violation and a 30 second shot clock violation pay tribute to Kobe?
If the coaches felt compelled to do some sort of in-game tribute, maybe a better idea would have been to just have each team designate one guy to chuck up the first 24 shots! Everyone else could crash the boards, and maybe we could also get some Kobe assists...

I don't see anything about Kobe in the OP's post.
January 29th, 2020 at 5:24 AM ^
He had to get that off of his chest. Anyway, I think it was more about the sport losing a great player and ambassador. He was this age groups Jordan.

While you may have the wrong thread for Kobe thoughts, I do agree with you.

It's a social media tsunami at this point.

Was in high school at same time as The Judge. Took my stoner friend down to see him at Cobo before we graduated. He was Albanian. His nickname Was Power Hitter.

Tally???? Not good when they can't spell your name right on the promotional poster.

He will be in charge of timeouts

Joubert is the head coach for Oakland Community College. He is huge. Saw him two years ago at a game and I’m not sure he will play much. If I remember correctly he knees are not very good because he was limping around. But this event will bring back some great memories of players from the PSL. One of my favorites was Anderson Hunt. Detroit Southwestern had some great players and I always enjoyed going to that gym and watching Watson coach them up.

I saw far more of the Judge's game than I ever needed to see when he was flaming out at Crisler. He was far more hype than talent. Still, this is a great event and worth seeing, if you can make it.

To be fair, it's not really his fault his game didn't translate to college. He was a 6-5 guard that wasn't very athletic. In high school he was able to get his shot off against 90% of the people he played with and that team was loaded, so it wasn't really hype when he averaged 30 pts a game in HS. My biggest memory was when they played State and Scott Skiles kept calling him fat boy and asking him why he couldn't keep up with him, as Skiles torched him.

Also, I think he was 6'5" in the same way that Jalen Rose was 6'8" (as in, not really .... there are numerous other examples).
January 29th, 2020 at 11:07 AM ^
uh.... Jalen Rose is 6'8" and officially listed as such in the NBA archives. You can trust that Joubert was / is 6'5", but whatever.
January 29th, 2020 at 12:08 PM ^
NBA listed heights aren't necessarily any more accurate than college listings.
January 29th, 2020 at 12:15 PM ^
his game didn't translate to college
The guy started 115 of 127 career games on some excellent Michigan teams. He just wasn't an NBA prospect.
January 29th, 2020 at 9:22 AM ^
He was good but was overhyped coming in. He played 127 games and averaged nearly 13 points 3 rebounds and 4+ assists per game. That is a pretty good line.
January 29th, 2020 at 12:12 PM ^
Joubert averaged 15.6 ppg as a senior. His career stats aren't too bad. Remember as well that he did this on two Big Ten championship teams. He just had to deal with extremely high expectations.

I remember the Judge's last home game (I think against Purdue?) - he went off. Couldn't miss from 25 feet. That dude had some talent.
January 29th, 2020 at 3:00 PM ^
I was there. Two of my favorite Crisler memories are Joubert's last home game and Gary Grant's last home game. That and winning the 1986 Big Ten crown at home.
Plus we sat in the lower bowl about 5 rows behind the scorers table for both.

Those names man

This would be awesome to see.
Willie Mitchell's shot per minute played ratio was amazing.
