CC: Sherrone Moore, no interviews needed

Submitted by LSA84 on January 24th, 2024 at 11:11 PM

He's tutored under our best, the players support him, he proved it in 4 games already.

The man found out during the flight to State College that he would need to be HC... AND OC... AND OL coach.

He won.  He didn't just win, he called a brilliant game, and his OL paved Penn State when JJ was hurt.

If you need a reminder of who he is, go watch the YouTube video of his post-game interview in State College.  You know the one.

Then he beat OSU.

He's 1-0 against Third Base.  1-0 against Frames.

I don't need to know any more.  Nor do you.  Nor does Warde or Santa.  Sherrone may or may not succeed, but he's earned the right to try.  Any hire other than Minter would be hugely disruptive, and the only candidate who might be better just replaced Nick Saban.

And in case you've forgotten, the last Wolverine coordinator promoted to HC won a national championship and is a Michigan legend.

The only open question is whether U of M could find some way to convince Moore and Minter to be Co-HC so we can keep them both, but I doubt U of M would be that creative.

Most people understand this. But virtually all new hires are risky, and many “sure things” flame out. If you can name three sure-fire winners that Michigan could likely land, go for it. I’ll wait.

The only sure thing is Kirby. He’s not coming. Neither is Deboer. Or Sark (who sucks anyway).  That leaves Lanning, who has won nothing and is 0-3 against DeBoer. There are no other coaches who appear to be better bets than Moore.

I love what Moore did when his name was called but I think to not accept applicants/interview for the next week or so would be doing the team a disservice. Make a well thought out decision.

"He's earned the right to try." Yes he has. And if we're honest with ourselves (those of you who are calling for coaching searches), Moore has as much chance as any available coach out there of succeeding. He has a leg up because the structure and culture have been built around him already.

We aren't a "go get em and give em your best shot johnny" school. We are at the top of the mountain. Not an O-J-T and hope it works situation. There's ALOT more to running a big boy football program then beating two good teams with someone else's players and game plan.  Let him "try" and see if he's a good coach elsewhere. There's plenty of successful CEO (coaches) out there that have done it ALL.

Georgia is a good example but they weren't taking nearly as much of a risk and they weren't winning SEC titles before Smart arrived let alone national championships. OSU is not a good example because they won a national championship under Meyer who had previous head coaching experience. Day has not won a national championship and is 1-3 versus Michigan. Ohio State understands what it takes to win in this current culture. Notre Dame is honestly another bad example, do you want to be them right now?

OSU isn’t a good example?

OSU won a national championship in 2014, their head coach got suspended multiple games in 2018 to which their OC took over and went 3-0, when Urban retired the reigns were handed to Day who for as much as we laugh at him is pretty dang good.

Michigan won a national championship, our head coach got suspended, our OC took over in Jim’s absence, Moore went 4-0 against a harder stretch of opponents with all the pressure in the world on him.

Also Notre Dame is 10-3 with a guy in his second full year and they recruit better than us. Also they would have beaten OSU who only lost by six to us, if they put enough guys on the field they probably beat OSU.

Stop being emotionally tied to Sherrone.  He had to do about 25% (less?), of the daily duties our next head coach will be responsible for.  He has never strategically planned an organization's future.  He implemented Harbaugh's game plan on 4 occasions this year.  That's it.

This x1000.

UM proved this week they can pay any college football coach any amount they want, so Warde is obligated to look for the best college football coach in the country, no matter if that coach is currently with Michigan, with another team, or not even coaching at all. (Not implying Saben.  He's retired for good.)

It's a smart strategic decision. Sherrone knows the program and culture -- and it's been the culture that has separated us from other teams. He can maintain continuity (oh, yeah, we just won the National Championship so continuity here is a good thing). The players know him, love him, and trust him, which means less attrition. We've started over here before -- not great experiences. And finally -- name one coach who is on the level that you're apparently talking about, who is available, fits in with Michigan's culture (remember the Rich Rod years -- those didn't go so well), and can continue the forward trajectory, and not take giant steps back before going forward, guaranteed.

Already mentioned in other post Moore will be the head coach at Michigan.  Already in process of selecting candidates for the open positions.

Players want him and the other staff are in support of the hire.  So far 3 or 4 spots open.   Clink most likely getting D coordinator job if Minter leaves.   Newsome to OL.

This probably doesn't need its own thread.  But has anyone brought up Jim Harbaugh's comments about the passing of the torch as foreshadowing the events of today and possibly Moore's promotion to HC?

Somewhere an AD is sitting in a room saying to themselves, man I cannot screw this up again….I do not begrudge this man for having to make the call because it is not an easy one.

Not sure if posted yet, but Jim has spoken;

"My love for Michigan, playing there and coming back to coach there, leaves a lasting impact. I'll always be a loyal Wolverine," Harbaugh said in a statement released by the Chargers. "I'm remarkably fortunate to have been afforded the privilege of coaching at places where life's journey has created strong personal connections for me. From working as an assistant coach at Western Kentucky alongside my father, Jack, and time as an assistant with the Raiders, to being a head coach at USD, Stanford, the 49ers and Michigan -- each of those opportunities carried significance, each felt personal. When I played for the Chargers, the Spanos family could not have been more gracious or more welcoming. Being back here feels like home, and it's great to see that those things haven't changed.

"The only job you start at the top is digging a hole, so we know we've got to earn our way. Be better today than yesterday. Be better tomorrow than today. My priorities are faith, family and football, and we are going to attack each with an enthusiasm unknown to mankind. This organization is putting in the work — investing capital, building infrastructure and doing everything within its power to win. Great effort equals great results, and we're just getting started."

there is no doubt in my mind that he is a man of high character.  He's young so if he pans out then we will be great at least another decade.  Still has room to grow and I expect he will be an even better coach after the first year.

Hopefully he can identify talent (in both coaches and players) and recruit.

I'll be proud to root for him.

If the biggest fear is that Sherone Moore is another David Shaw, or worse, a Michigan version of a born on third base coach, I’ll take that any day over RichRod or Hoke level ineptitude. I’ll probably get negged, but Ryan Day is a really good coach that has trouble beating his biggest rival. So did Jim Harbaugh for a long time. Sherone will not run a soft program - that’s a guarantee - and if he can replicate Shaw or Ryan Day’s success in his first 3-4 years, he will be a great hire and will be in the playoff every year. Be thankful that Jim Harbaugh hired great assistants that are viable replacements.

I will root like crazy for Moore to succeed, but it is worth remembering that 24 months ago, after Warde failed to put Harbaugh back to his pre-COVID salary and we nearly lost him to the NFL, there was a Broyles Award winning OC and internal hire lined up to keep things going.  (And after we lucked into Harbaugh coming back, that OC was not snapped up as a HC somewhere else.)

Why Sherrone? Maybe let Harbaugh himself explain, from a 2022 interview:

"They don't get any better," Harbaugh said on Thursday. "There's been a lot of great line coaches. I mean, I can't think of one better than Sherrone Moore and he's a great teacher. I will start with that. "Teaching" and "coaching" is synonymous. Tremendous passion for the game and for our players. Bleeds Blue like nobody else. Just tremendous enthusiasm every single day. Smart, smart. Wicked smart. And just, in every way, a Michigan man. He's not afraid of any challenge or taking on any new challenge. But those are just to list a few."

...

"I mean, nobody I have more respect for than Sherrone Moore, nobody that I worked with do I have more respect for," Harbaugh said. "Like a brother. Like my own brother. And he's -- that trust, that friendship, that love goes both ways. That's what I -- that's how I feel about Sherrone Moore."

Sherrone got my vote just for not being born on third... he has earned every bit of it.., and I don't think for a nanosecond that harbaugh didn't have some plan to leave the team with the core that will remain and will be able to carry it forward. It may be slightly bumpy, but I have no doubt there was already a plan to put Sheronne in as HC as much as it's already being pushed as a given fact. We probably don't have attrition near alabama levels, and I think we keep what makes michigan great, the player development.
The next year or two are going to be weird either way

Go get that ring Jim!

FlexUM

January 25th, 2024 at 7:47 AM ^

There was a major culture change at UM and SM was a huge part of that. Jim trusted him every step of the way and even though Jim is gone, it's pretty clear he told UM that SM is "the guy" and the best way to carry the next step forward. That will carry weight.

Let's go coach Moore!

To coach the football team.  We have an opening at head coach and a pipeline of talent, and the best college football coach and recruiter of all time happens to have some free time.  You're not making that call?

Moore did a really good job when he was in the big boy chair for a few games.

And I have driven my friend's boat for a few races when he was out, and done very well.  But I have my own boat too, only I usually finish at the back when I race it.  Still a lot to learn there.

Borrowing someone else's boat is very, very different from owning your own.  It sounds like Michigan is just going to run with Moore, and that has its advantages and Moore has earned the right to be a huge contender for the job.  I just don't like that he's the only contender.

This argument would be more valid even two weeks ago. But with deBoer and Fisch in new jobs, the two candidates who could reasonably be considered potentially worth paying the price of short-term losses to the program (in terms of players, coaches and likely Herbert) in the long term, and plausible hires are off the board. In part, that's why he's the only contender (I think he would have likely been the hire even if deBoer and Fisch were "available").

I'm fine with Moore as HC as long as Hart and JayBaugh share OC duties. They had the most fun interim coached game of the season, and Moore as HC really left JJ uncomfortable at QB. If those guys can keep the offense fun and QB engaged while Moore leads the ship, I'm all for it.

I'm all for a coaching search though. Moore won with a Harbaugh prepped team, but never really convincingly. Shaky enough to question if he should be the automatic replacement.
