CC: Jerry Rice thinks Harbaugh is "gone" in SF

Submitted by Atlanta_Blue on

Take it FWIW but for Michigan to land JH, he's got to be on the market.

Yeah, that's true.  That's especially far, but like you said, he also has a helicopter so that changes things a bit.  He also owns a residence at the Ritz-Carlton downtown LA which is adjacent to the Staples Center.

That is it.  Trent Baalke dislikes JH, and resents that he (Baalke) has not been given more recognition for building a roster of cast-offs and a few top draft picks into a very good team.

I could say some nasty things about Baalke, but I am not going to do that, because the fact of the matter is that I care about a thousand times more about JH as a potential Michigan coach than I do about the Niners.  As long as Michigan has JH, I am perfectly happy with the world knowing what a badass genius Trent Baalke is, and he can have all the credit for whatever happens next.

If SF parted ways with Harbaugh, I wonder if one term of his severance might be that if he takes another NFL job he loses whatever pay that job comes with out of his severance pay.  That could be optimal for both Harbaugh and SF.

From SF's perspective, it provides an incentive to Harbaugh to look for work outside of the NFL (so he's not helping a competing franchise), and takes a successful coach out of the league.  From Harbaugh's perspective, it allows him to coach at the collegiate level while (a) earning double pay and (b) saving some face.

The above is based on conjencture, hopes, and baling wire.  But still ... .

Harbaugh stinks.  He clearly can't coach.  In fact, just fire him now and be done with in, 'kay?

Honestly we probably DON'T want them to fire him just yet, because as long as he is employed in SF, as a college program I believe we can talk to him free and clear while NFL teams would be "tampering".   As soon as he is fired, he is free game to talk to anyone.

...if he were fired now, no NFL would talk to him until December whereas we could offer him the job in under a month

He's not even close to losing his job right now, but if he were that would be good for us

IF you play, or coach, football then the NFL is the ultimate goal and a superbowl would be the epitome of the ultimate accomplishment in the sport of football.

there are exactly 32 head coaching jobs in the NFL.  not only is it prestigious but it is limited in opportunity as well.

Personally i see no way that man who could coach in the NFL, much less about choose their destination, would ever come back to college ball... but what do I know?

No, it doesn't. We need to move past this "Michigan is the best job". It isn't anymore. The NFL is the big time compared to college ball. There's a reason coaches rarely go from NFL to college football when they're good.

Saban was terrible in the NFL, that's the only reason he went to Alabama. If Harbaugh came to Michigan it'd be unprecedented.

"I have heard some complaints from some players that he likes to try to coach with the collegiate mentality, and that's just not going to work in the NFL," Rice said at a charity event Tuesday, via Newsday.

The 49ers 247Sports board has an article as well - LINK

In this piece, you have Rice saying:

"I have heard some complaints from some players that he likes to try to coach with the collegiate mentality, and that's just not going to work in the NFL," Rice told Newsday.com's Bob Glauber on Tuesday.

I am sure we've heard this gripe about him before when it comes to Harbaugh's interactions with NFL players as being wearing at best.

Harbaugh can be as grating as he wants to in college.  A player is only around four or five years.  By his senior year, he gets "leader" status and is treated much better.  In other words, the players aren't around long enough for a coach like Harbaugh to lose the locker room.  In addition, the players aren't old enough to bitch that they want to be "treated like adults."

College is perfect for a coach like Harbaugh.
