The meltdown here is going to be epic when Harbaugh goes to Oakland.
November 4th, 2014 at 3:06 PM ^
I think the board could handle Harbaugh going to Oakland (or Dallas) ok provided somebody like Mullen was announced as the replacement.
But if Harbaugh goes to another pro team and we keep Hoke or hire a "Michigan Man" like Cam Cameron or someobdy like that this place will implode.
November 4th, 2014 at 3:28 PM ^
People here would understand it's the NFL. If he sticks in the NFL, the fans will be ok with it, especially in Mullen comes.

I don't really understand all the Mullen love. I mean, I'm aware of it. Not fully aware, I guess.

Not just implode, it will be a meltdown the likes of which have never been seen before on MGoBlog.

can opt out of his contract should MIchigan make an offer to him that he cannot refuse. SF cannot stop him even if they wanted to trade him. Harbaugh would enjoy "sticking it" to the GM should that scenario play out. SF ends up with nothing while losing him.
Could be good incentive for JH to take the MIchigan job.

He has his dad talk to Stephen Ross or someone similar. Mr. Ross then mentions it to Mr. Hackett and the outlines of a deal are quickly done. Harbaugh must know he will either be first choice or not even in the running (for any of a number potential reasons). So if he wants it there is nothing lost in just discretely asking for it.

how does one manage -516 mgopoints?

One would think that we have a better shot in getting JH than KU, but aren't all of these stories wonderful?

the kind of character and deeply competitve desire that has driven him through his career and prompted so much of his success. He was around great teams at Michigan and he was on some up and down clubs in the NFL nearly landing the Colts in the Super Bowl. He's taken all that experience and transformed it into winning formula as a coach in both college and the NFL.
Not sure why Harbaugh's character might be any more grating than Belichick or Coughlin. Yeah, each has won the Super Bowl. Harbaugh will make waves and have his issues, but if he comes to AA, I think Michigan football will be in great hands again.

You're taking the job right? I know you're under contract with another team and you probably can't comment so just...give me a hillbilly karate chop if the answer is yes.
...
Thank you! See you soon.

I'd love to see the look on Dantonio's face when Harbaugh gives him a firm smack on the back after trucking State in Ann Arbor (wait...A2....we're allowed to play them in A2?) next season! Then, when Dantonio demands an apology for the lack of respect, Jim can tell him to suck a dick.

we know Jim Harbaugh is better with student athletes. proof:

I have to show that to my 11 year old daughter - she loves this show.

...is that if SF players don't like playing for him, would a high school recruit be concerned, too?
Hmmmm???
November 4th, 2014 at 3:48 PM ^
JH has played in and coached in the NFL and the Super Bowl. I think that would be pretty compelling for both athletes and their parents.

There's definitely been enough smoke that there's certainly a puncher's chance at landing Harbaugh if/when he burns out with the 49ers. Certainly a long shot at this point but at least one with a non-zero percent chance of fruition.
If Michigan is smart, they'll have already put out feelers and laid the groundwork for at least having that dialogue with Harbaugh's camp. But... yeah: "If Michigan is smart" When evaluated in the context of oh... the last seven years, that qualifier alone gives me pause.

Do you mix those metaphors with a spoon or a cement truck?
November 4th, 2014 at 3:51 PM ^
If the 49ers start to tank, do they fire Harbaugh sooner?

Poor Jim must've fallen asleep on the tanning bed. Good thing he had a towel over his face.

President Schlissell may prove to be a factor in Harbaughs decision in a specific way.
His Ivy league academic pedigree and focus on uncompromised excellence (based on his public statements) may be the salve to Harbaugh's previously expressed complaints about Michigan football's academic integrity.
Not that this is at all the main factor in his potential hiring - there are many others expressed here. But maybe Schlissel's presence will give Jim cover from his previous excuriating comments by creating the perception of a renewed committment to "doing thing the right way", thereby removing another, albeit small, obstacle to his homecoming.
November 4th, 2014 at 5:26 PM ^
It's much simpler than that. If Harbaugh is the guy, he can encourage his players to take a more rigorous cirriculum. He is free to encourage his guys to aim as high as they want.
November 4th, 2014 at 4:18 PM ^
This needs to happen. Whatever money he wants, whatever control he needs, whatever assistants he wants, you damn well make sure he gets them. Make him an offer he literally can't refuse.

Jim Harbaugh likely candidate to coach Michigan.
Before you get too excited, there's not much here that we haven't already heard. But it is nice to hear it again from NBC.

And it's also from 3 weeks ago based on a Mike Florio profootball talk article from 6 weeks ago. Maybe you can dig up some useless articles from 2011?

To say there's nothing new in there is a massive understatement. You could ask why they would bother putting something like this out but I suppose they have to fill their stuff up with something. The world has more than enough blabber.
November 4th, 2014 at 4:29 PM ^
There has been some talk that Trestman may be on the hot seat, or if not yet he very well could be if they continue to struggle this season. The stars could align for JH to coach the Bears, which would not be good for our chances. GO BEARS!

Douglass Totten says Harbaugh won't go to Michigan.
http://ninernoise.com/2014/10/24/harbaugh-wont-go-michigan-2/
"Would any big-time head coach at a successful NFL team give that up to be placed in a box, have to convince high schoolers to come to a struggling school to play football for him, and have to pretend to work around class schedules? Didn’t think so."

Michigan wouldn't be struggling for long. Get Harbaugh here and recuiting is as easy as 1, 2, 3...
Also, at Michigan, he doesn't have to deal with millionaire spoiled brats who don't want to take direction and are always looking to bail for their next big contract. At Michigan he also doesn't have to deal with meddling GM's and owners who want to make all the personnel decisions.
At Michigan, the football program is his....ALL HIS.

But HARBAUGH IS LEAVING SAN FRAN does not = HARBAUGH IS COMING TO MICHIGAN. His problems with San Fran are very reminiscient of the issues Bill Parcells had with the various teams in his NFL career. I am very skeptical that Harbaugh won't get an offer from a down on its luck NFL team to just run the entire football operations. I really can't fathom other NFL teams letting someone of his caliber just leave the league.
Especially with a rudderless franchise in Oakland desperate for someone to come in and take things over right there in the same market. They need a football man and a head coach to run things, and Harbaugh is RIGHT THERE.
November 4th, 2014 at 5:35 PM ^
Exactly. It's the entire franchise, not the just the team. The rot starts and the very top and works its way down.
If JH would rather endure that (which would no doubt be limited to a couple of seasons given the last ten years' coaching carousel) than come to Ann Arbor as the returning Prodigal Son, I'd wonder what it was he was really after. Oakland is a losing club no matter how you look at it.
