The Case for Speight
I realize that the anti-Speight movement isn't as strong here as in other venues, but I still thought that this column was worth a read. He isn't perfect but last year was pretty good, and he was a big part of wins against Colorado, Penn State and Wisconsin.

Harbaugh is about as fiery of a competitor as it gets. He wants to win every Saturday. So that tells me that if he's trotting Speight out under center, that means Speight gives this team the best chance to win. I trust Harbaugh's proven track record with QBs far more than all of our armchair QB'ing and gut impulse reactions.
Sure, Speight's inconsistency with hitting his receivers may cost this team a game at some point. But the other options on this team either have bigger flaws (O'Korn, possibly Peters), aren't ready to start (possibly Peters, definitely McCaffery), or just are what they are and aren't good enough to start (Malzone).
Speight isn't perfect, but he's the best chance this team has to win games. I say we go with that.

I said "...such divided opinion on this matter..." As in people have a wide range of differing opinions. Yes, Speight is the QB. People seem to vary wildly in how they feel about that. We're two games into the season and there have been about 50 threads on the topic. In each one, the range of opinions is vast. I certainly hope everyone wants the team to succeed regardless.

Ultimately, I trust the judgment and coaching of our staff, and if they think Speight's the best quarterback on the team, then I believe them, and I will support him wholeheartedly, as I would any other player lining up.

it's like all of you were born after 2003. Do you even remember John Navarre?

Navarre was an above average QB by any statisical analysis and far from what people try to pin on him.

I wouldn't put the orange bowl on Speight. He didn't really do anything to stand out but he didn't cost us that game the way he did the o$u game. Although 163 yards on 21 completions is far from impressive. The orange bowl was probably the 1 game you could blame on the defense and it was really just 2 plays. Jourdan Lewis made a mistake on coverage and they also gave up a big 80 yard run. If those 2 plays don't happen we go on to win.
21/38 | 163 | 4.3 | 1 | 1 |
42.6 |

I would argue that while the stats weren't great for him, he was awesome in that game. He engineered a few second half drives behind a sieve of an offensive line. The line played like it was 2013.

Tom Brady wasn't that good at Michigan, ergo, Wilton Speight will be the greatest quarterback ever!!!

comparisons. Rewatch the 2003 Minnesota game or the 2003 OSU game btw and tell me Navarre sucks. He was in the league for a brief time as well.

This thread is a cesspool.
R-E-L-A-X people. It's just a game.
Speight is fine, serviceable. He may get better as the year progresses and he settles in with his new OL and receivers.. Or he might not. But people need to get it through their thick skulls - Speight is the best we have right now. Period. End of. My source? Jim Fucking Harbaugh. There's more to a QB than throwing the ball. Oh, and we're 2-0 by the way. With two double-digit victories.
Stop being negativbe all the fucking time and support the players. Or at least internalize some of your doubts. Is that so much to ask - to not be an obnoxious dick because Speight isn't Baker Mayfield? Fuck.

I was driving the Speight bandwagon. I have since given up the reins but still on bandwagon. Pre-snap, he is the best QB I have seen at Michigan in years. He knows where everyone is supposed to line up, he checks plays at line, he knows where to go with ball, excellent pocket presence. If he can clean up mistakes he could lead M to B1G championship. I am not giving up. But, I do expect him to start to improve beginning this week.

If Harbaugh selects him, that's good enough for me.
