BYU Starting QB Taysom Hill Out for the year with a broken foot

Submitted by TheDirtyD on
Heisman long shot and Star BYU QB Taysom Hill sprained his foot against Nebraska early in the game. Hill returned only to re-injure it again this time taking him out for the game. He left in a boot and on crutches and won't return to the field. According to a sideline report from Todd McShay. A freshmen Tanner Mangum replaced Hill.

Outside of whatever OSU QB, he might be the best QB we face this year. Michigan might catch a break if Hill is still out against them on 9/26.

Get well soon my friend. Edit I had the wrong date. EDIT#2 per ESPN he's done for the year and BYU message boards. http://www.cougarboard.com/board/message.html?id=14517988

Unlike us, other teams have backup QBs who can actually play. As Nebraska just found out. We will probably lose to them no matter who they have at QB, based on what they showed today.

Guys it don't matter. We're going to have a game on their hands.

This is not like a "Oh I'm going into the horseshoe, let's see what happens. This is an I'm going into the big house, and i can win this."

Harbaugh and Co. better bring their A-game, or we could be staring at at least 2 OOC losses.

Tanner looks like his wheels are just about as good... We'll have our hands full either way and I'm sure his confidence is only going to skyrocket following that finish.

That's why I prefaced it with "just about". Mangum isn't as elusive or savvy running the ball, but I bet their straight line speed is very close. He also looks faster than Travis Wilson and his legs wound up being the difference for Utah offensively. So my ultimate point was that either one will be mobile enough to frustrate us come game day. I don't have the defeatist attitude some insist having in every thread though. I like our chances to beat them yet and still. Nebraska's defense isn't as good or as talented as ours and aside from that Hail Mary, they adjusted and shut BYU down in the second half. That's tape to pay attention to. I also don't think BYU is anywhere near as good as Utah and we hung in that game despite several back breaking mistakes. The only thing that slightly concerns me outside of the QB mobility is their WR's height... But 2 of our DBs are tall for the position, and Jourdan Lewis is flypaper. Plus the game is at home, so there's that.

Is it me or has there been a huge increase in the number of successful Hail Marys in college football over the last 2-3 years?   The Doug Flutie and Kordell Stewart ones were huge national stories, but nowadays they don't seem to be that big of a deal.  Nebraska even was on the other end (against Northwestern) last year or the year before.

I'm not sure why this is.  Teams seem to be running the play the same as before, but with more success.

Well, this is a much easier game for us now. With him and their starting RB who withdrew from school out of the picture, they don't have any proven playmakers on offense.

By scoring a last minute Hail Mary TD to win? He didn't come out of the game until late in the 4th. Mangum didn't show anything besides the ability to throw a football 40 yards in the air. Obviously Hill was the heart and soul of their offense, so something needs to change for them big time to keep scoring a lot of points.

Wow thats huge news that really should have its own thread or change title of this one.   This freshman looked very good with his arm but Taysom Hill was a true dual threat.  He is such an exciting player and its a shame for him - he came back from injuries twice already that ended his years.  Just tough to play his style and keep going as RG3 and others can attest to.

I feel it's nothing short of a tragedy for college football that Taysom Hill it now effectively done

You almost never see a lisfranc injury reported in the press without calling it "the dreaded lisfranc injury." Often means the end of athletic career. Terrible luck.

Old but informative article about lisfranc injuries here.

Orthopaedic surgeons are finding an increase in the number of serious foot injuries among elite athletes according to a study presented at the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society's (AOFAS) annual summer meeting today. These include Lisfranc (midfoot) injuries, potentially career ending injuries often misdiagnosed as sprains.

The study found that elite athletes are especially at risk for Lisfranc injuries. Football players typically sustain this injury when their feet are planted and they get tackled from behind. The tacking motion puts great force on the mid-foot, causing a rupture of the ligament.

I was not familiar with this injury and feel really bad for this guy.  It seems as if he is one of those kids that never got a break from injuries throughout his career.  Let's hope that surgery and rehab will get him back to running again, if not for competitive contact sports.

Bummer.  Was kind of looking forward to watching him play.  However his backup is no slouch so the BYU game will still be a challenge IMO; but at least a little bit less so.   Game now moves from a probable loss to a toss-up in my book.

Really sucks for that kid. He was a matchup nightmare and the kind of QB that has given Michigan fits forever. Just some really rotten luck. BYU game goes into the toss up column, I think it will still be a very tough game.

the backup QB for BYU was a 4 star recruit, whose been on his mission so he's older now.  Offered by Oregon State, Boise State, Arkansas and Utah.  As his coach stated in the post-game interview he tied with Jamis Winston for 1st at the Elite 11 camp in high school.

Anyone offered by Boise St to play QB should be taken seriously.

Kid can play guys.
