Brock Bowers has surgery on ankle
Looks like All American Georgia Tight End Brock Bowers has had surgery for a high ankle sprain. I'm not sure how long that would take for him to come back and no word yet on his recovery time.
October 16th, 2023 at 2:00 PM ^
They could, yes, but I doubt that. UGA loses to Auburn without him. Also, Vandy of all teams hung around a game that was headed to a blowout b/c UGA had trouble moving the ball in the 2nd half with him gone.
October 16th, 2023 at 12:55 PM ^
You've already got two nattys, Brock. Shut it down and go get paid.
Your pal,
Jake Butt

Georgia's schedule, like UM, is heavily back loaded.
October 16th, 2023 at 12:12 PM ^
GA doesn't have near the challenge that M does at the end. Not happy that both teams have had "Hostess" schedules so far. Wait, the kind that Pope Urban used to feast on and now complains about.
October 16th, 2023 at 12:18 PM ^
Urban needs to reserve plenty of time to digitally probe his mistresses.
October 16th, 2023 at 12:42 PM ^
Not really, but thank you for playing.
Georgia gets #13 Ole Miss at home, #17 Tennessee on the road, and then an SEC Championship tune-up in Georgia Tech.
Michigan is on the road at Penn State, who as long as they don't get blown out will almost certainly still be top-10 and a CFP contender regardless of what happens this weekend, and then a top-5 matchup at home with OSU. Sandwiched in between that is a game on the road against a talented and what might be very desperate Maryland team.
One of these schedules is not at all like the other. The only "leg up" Georgia can have on Michigan's schedule at that point in the year is in a conference championship game. A matchup against Alabama would be more daunting than whoever the West spits out. But no, the end of our regular seasons are not even remotely comparable.
October 16th, 2023 at 12:07 PM ^
So probably out until the SEC Championship game.
Georgia can probably go cruise control without him in most of its remaining games, but they have back-to-back potential landmines towards the end of the season, at home against Ole Miss and on the road at Tennessee. If he's not back for one or both of those, and Georgia sleepwalks through either of those games, then those are games that Georgia could lose.
And then if he's still not ready for the SEC Championship game, then that's problematic in a much bigger way. As Georgia has seen before just two years ago, the last guy who I want to be staring down the barrel at when his team's playoff hopes are on the line is Nick effing Saban.
October 16th, 2023 at 12:16 PM ^
I don't think it's out of the question that he sits out the rest of the year to prep for the draft. Kid is a potential top 10 pick
October 16th, 2023 at 12:45 PM ^
If Georgia misses the CFP, then yeah he'll sit out. But if Georgia makes the CFP, I have a hard time believing he would not want to stick around and go for a three-peat. Without him, Georgia's chances of three-peating plummet. He may very well be the difference for them. I doubt that's something he wants attached to his legacy.
He also does not want to be the first player on a team that makes the CFP who sits out by choice.
October 16th, 2023 at 1:08 PM ^
Didn’t Jaxon Smith-Njigba sit out last year? It was under the guise of his hamstring injury but I recall the insiders reporting he was healthy enough to return and opted out.
October 16th, 2023 at 1:57 PM ^
I thought for him it was a situation of he could return, but he would still not be 100% or near it, so in that situation bringing him back would've (at least for JSN) done more harm than good. Maybe I'm misremembering, though.
I will contend that if Bowers is at or near 100% and Georgia makes the CFP, he'll be suiting up for it.
October 16th, 2023 at 8:07 PM ^
I did too. I always thought surgery was for tears.
Maybe if it's a bad sprain stiches can be used to help it heal faster.
October 16th, 2023 at 11:58 AM ^
I'm guessing he had tightrope procedure that Tua had. High ankle sprains used to end seasons but now they're doing this I guess.
October 16th, 2023 at 12:04 PM ^
Wouldn't be a surprise. They use it for torn ligaments in ankle fractures as well.
October 16th, 2023 at 12:19 PM ^
It looks like Bowers is the third Georgia player to undergo this procedure this season. And, in other cases - the players were out four+ weeks.
Bowers accounts for about 24% of Georgia's passing yardage - 21% of the receptions. He's the leading receiver in terms of both receptions and yardage for the Bulldogs.
October 16th, 2023 at 12:30 PM ^
He's the best player in the country, not that he'll win the trophy for that because of his position (and now the injury).
October 16th, 2023 at 1:46 PM ^
Out of all the players who enter the draft, Bowers looks like the player who will have the most successful NFL career. He already looks like a TE1 in the NFL, and he's still playing college ball. As long as Bowers avoids injuries while he is in the NFL, I expect Bowers to someday make the NFL HoF. He's that talented.
October 16th, 2023 at 12:35 PM ^
The crazy thing is the play I believe he was hurt on was a sweep. They use him to run the ball as well.
October 16th, 2023 at 12:09 PM ^
Brock, sit out and rehab to get ready for the draft. You have MILLIONS coming your way as a top 10-15 pick. Look at TE's you will be compared to:
Travis Kelce. In every commercial it seems. Might be dating someone???
Gronk. Does all right in retirement. SI Swimsuit model too.
October 16th, 2023 at 12:15 PM ^
Are you saying that Gronk is dating a swimsuit model or that he is a swimsuit model? Not that there's anything wrong with that.
October 16th, 2023 at 2:47 PM ^
Both Gronk and his girlfriend are in the following photo. Can you tell who's who?
October 16th, 2023 at 12:14 PM ^
Forgive me if I try too hard not to smile...esp since I don't wish injury on anyone, but this will help our path.
October 16th, 2023 at 12:20 PM ^
Don't go there.
October 16th, 2023 at 12:33 PM ^
I know, I know...it's a difficult position, considering we've had our share of problems with injury as well. With his recovery time, chances are he'll be back for the CFP. But this alters things for them in their regular season.
But you're 100% spot on.
October 16th, 2023 at 12:30 PM ^
The only thing that will help our path is to keep winning. Rankings and injuries to other teams mean fuck all.
October 16th, 2023 at 12:36 PM ^
Not cool to even think that, but osucks thought they had a good chance when Corum was hurt too.
October 16th, 2023 at 12:41 PM ^
Nope, great point.
I'm bad and I should feel bad. I won't go back and edit my comment. I'll take my punishment like a big boy.
October 16th, 2023 at 12:15 PM ^
What a loss. This is like us losing Corum towards the end of last year
October 16th, 2023 at 12:20 PM ^
Starting to look like both UGA and Bama can make the playoff - assuming Bama wins SEC championship against undefeated UGA.
Going to be tough to get 2 SEC teams and 2 B1G teams into the playoff. Root hard against Bama every game!
October 16th, 2023 at 12:31 PM ^
This could be a season where four different conferences are represented - with strong contenders in CFP. More parity this season, than in most. And, I think that last year - 2022 - four conferences would have been in the CFP if USC hadn't lost to Utah in the Pac-12 CCG.
October 16th, 2023 at 12:53 PM ^
What???
Every pundit has been saying the complete opposite.
UGA has already had several close calls in the 4th. Bama's looked like garbage without an elite QB.
Meanwhile both Texas/OU and UW/Oregon played barnburner showcase games, and looked great doing it.
Everyone is saying this is the down year for the SEC. This is the year that we have 4 representatives from 4 conferences.
October 16th, 2023 at 12:23 PM ^
Wishing him the speediest of recoveries. Special player
October 16th, 2023 at 12:41 PM ^
Respectfully - I wish him a complete recovery - and, wouldn't wish injury on any player.
I'm not a physician, I don't "play" one on tv - and, from my perspective - I'd suggest he rest and recover until the NFL Combine.
October 16th, 2023 at 12:31 PM ^
Minimum 2 months recovery time and with rehab very doubtful he will play this season.
October 16th, 2023 at 12:34 PM ^
Football in college and in the NFL is a war of attrition—teams that win national championships or the Super Bowl are normally relatively free of serious injury to key players. In 1997 the only starter we lost for the season was former walk-on LB and co-captain Eric Mayes, who suffered an ACL tear in the fourth game against IU. If we'd lost Woodson or Steele or Hutchinson to a similar injury, it's much harder to envision Michigan going undefeated.
October 16th, 2023 at 1:45 PM ^
You are so right. It's not who you start the season with, it's who remains at the end. I do believe the UM coaching staff understands this, and the depth that is being built will result in a longer term sustainable competitiveness. But there is still no way to truly replace a special player like a Woodson or a Bowers.
October 16th, 2023 at 3:39 PM ^
Another thing to look for is - "When and how is this (Michigan team) fighting for the extra yard?"
Look at this Michigan roster - and, how they play. When do they "really fight" for the extra yard - and, when do they "take" what's given to them and avoid contact? IMO, it's most evident with Corum and JJ. If they're running - and, along the sideline - and, they have picked up the first down - what do they do? They advance as far as they can - and - step out on the sideline - avoiding contact after making the gain. IMO, it's very smart football.
October 16th, 2023 at 4:17 PM ^
Dr. Eric Mayes holds a post-doctorate master’s degree in Education Policy and Management from the Harvard Graduate School of Education, a Ph.D. in Educational Psychology from Howard University, and both a master’s degree in Educational Technology and a bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. A former college athlete, Dr. Mayes advanced from a walk-on to Co-Captain of the 1997 University of Michigan National Championship Football Team.
October 16th, 2023 at 12:36 PM ^
Shut it down and go get your bread. He's staring down a top 10-15 pick. Can you imagine what happens if he came back and ruptured it trying to compete? Oh wait, we literally watched that happen with Butt.
October 16th, 2023 at 12:41 PM ^
Oh man wait till the good folks over at RCMB find out we're creating Georgia injury threads during hate week.
Their tiny little sparty heads will collectively explode.
October 16th, 2023 at 12:49 PM ^
Georgia's remaining schedule is - with the current ranking of their opponents.
October 21st - Bye
October 28 - vs Florida in Jacksonville
November 5 - hosting Missouri (20)
November 12 - hosting Ole Miss (13)
November 19 - at Tennessee (17)
November 26 - at Georgia Tech
October 16th, 2023 at 3:30 PM ^
The only opponent on that list that's even a remote threat to beat Georgia is Tennessee, and that's primarily because it's in Knoxville. Georgia isn't losing to Missouri or Ole Miss in Athens, or to GT anywhere.
October 16th, 2023 at 3:44 PM ^
I certainly tend to agree with you. And, can quickly take them one at a time - Georgia Tech, no chance - period.
Florida - depends on what shows up - weather - turnovers - etc. But, a Gator win is unlikely, as would be a Missouri win in Athens.
I'm not so sure about Ole Miss - and, whether Kiffin can dial up an offense to be effective against them in Athens. Again - possible - and, that's assuming Ole Miss can play something called defense.
Tennessee has been the game on the calendar all year long - and, it is in Knoxville. The Vols have a chance.
October 16th, 2023 at 12:51 PM ^
He might not be ready by the SEC championship game, which would be a big blow for them.
October 16th, 2023 at 12:56 PM ^
he leads the team in Receptions, receiving yards, and receiving TDs. Not saying that cant win without him but he's a big part of that offense
October 16th, 2023 at 1:04 PM ^
UGA will squeak another one out and we'll all hear Kirby state how tough it is to win a conference game in the SEC.
October 16th, 2023 at 1:36 PM ^
Hoping for an easy recovery. Looking forward to watching this dude in the league for years to come. He's a monster with a skillset that doesn't come around too often.
October 16th, 2023 at 1:40 PM ^
Whoa.
High ankle sprains take forever to heal, especially ones that require surgery.
GA's remaining schedule is easier than Michigan's. If someone can give GA trouble, UM is gonna grab that AP #1 ranking.
For those of you who think rankings dont matter, two weeks from now when the CFP creates their rankings, one of the things everyone in that room will look at are the current AP/Coaches rankings. Rankings matter.
#GoBlue
October 16th, 2023 at 2:46 PM ^
Not quite as bad, but close, to us losing JJ. He's been bailing them out all year long.
October 16th, 2023 at 2:50 PM ^
You could argue that Bowers has been the difference on offense for the past three seasons - not only this "all year long" - but, going back to the '21 season.
He's very effective - talented - and executes at a very high level. Bowers is the "straw that stirs" the Georgia offense.
