Am told #Toledo OC Brian Wright took his name out of the mix for the #Michigan asst job working with WRs (that Dan Enos left for Bama).. Former #UF HC Jim McElwain interviewed for that job and is a strong contender for that spot.

Toledo's offensive stats in 2017:

Total offense- 14th

FIrst Downs- 11th

Passing offense- 26th

Rushing Offense- 29th

Scoring Offense- 16th

Pass efficiency- 7th

Yards per game- 485.1

Would have been a great hire by all accounts. Also, in many minds he was somebody this fanbase has wanted to replace drevno at OC. Wright will be a highly pursued power5 coordinator in the next year or so, so getting him early would have been wise. He was also a top nominee for the Broyles Award this year. In other news, things are getitng very, very interesting in regarding this programs search for another coach.

For about $1.5M you can have your very own ocean front condo.  A modest house will set you back double that.  I lived in SD for 11 years before coming to my senses and realizing that I would probably never be able to retire there on a middle to upper middle class salary.  I loved the weather and proximity to Vegas though.

Sounds like he was gonna be the Don Brown type hire.

No doubt he’s of joined up if it was for OC though.

What kind of offense does he run?

Had the same youth and the same offense a few years back. I bet someone said the same thing. Bad seasons offensively dont go away with some offseason training. If you think our offense is going to suddenly have a turnaround after 13 games didnt do the trick you might be in for a rude awakening. It will get rough i promise you that. Best case scenario is we old school Ravens our way through the season.

Michigan went from the 89th-ranked offense per S&P+ in 2014 to 38th in 2015.  So yeah, it is not beyond reason that a team can change year-to-year.  And if you don't think a young team can imrpove dramatically year-to-year, remember that Notre Dame entered 2016 with one of the youngest teams in the country and proceeded to go 4-8.  The next year, with a bit more luck and more returning experience, went 10-3.

So there is lots of evidence that a team, even with basically the same staff, can experience significant improvement year-to-year.

They're very comparable. I don't like it either but I'm not going to bury my head in the sand and scream, "fake news" or "Harbaugh" every time someone brings this up The w/l records and recruit class rankings are eerily similar.

105th ranked offense, 1 win against a team with a +.500 record (Purdue), losses to both rivals, no clear player progression throughout the season, blew a 16pt lead against South Carolina in the bowl game after a month to prepare for the game. But yeah, the team will be a year older next year so we are winning it all!

Experienced coaches don't want to just be a WR coach. It is a position for up-and-comers, not someone who has been a D1 OC.

First, Enos uses UM like a handkerchief

Second, one true offensive lineman in recruiting class

Third, not being able to fill final coaching position

Fourth, considering mcilwaine for final coaching position, because to me that certainly seems like settling.

If anybody has the connections to go pull a good offensive mind/recruiter, I figured it would be Harbaugh.

This doesn't seem to be the year to settle. Next year is critical. On field success is going to be difficult, but imperative to flip the narrative of the staff, and turn the recruiting successes back around. I look at this hire as a chance for Harbaugh to regain some of his innovation.

First, good riddance to Enos.  For all we know Harbaugh just stuck it to Saban.  Given MSU's toxic sports culture I am not sad about this development.

2, yes, it would have been better if we had signed more OL.  That is a sore subject but Bama and OSU will sign them and steroid them and we can't control that but I do believe we will maximize what we have, and coach them, and we do have some promising redshirts from last year.

3, wrong ... wrong.   the position is coveted and will be filled with a solid hire.  not named Enos

4 McElwain a good hire if that happens, and very interesting.  Opens up some possibilities.  I have to bleach my brain from the images as we will no longer be joking about him that way... definite possiblities

A repeat of last year is one of the most glaring. The eligibilty of a certain transfer will help though. Then there is the glaring issue of OL play. So if eligibilty for Shea is not granted and no improvement with OL then I can see a repeat. That being said IF my aunt had balls.....something something something

Seriously, any OP that misses “pursued” that overtly in a write-up doesn’t deserve any upvotes. As for the subject, who cares if a MAC or other 2nd tier coach pulled their name? OK, I am also pulling my name from consideration 25 years after a GA position in the Big Eight. Big deal. Oh, McElwain was a HC in the SEC but somehow my feeble resume should garner attention? This board has turned into negative land. 8-5 and a mediocre recruiting class send fans running to grab a pitchfork. I hope the 2018 team kicks ass and the folks jumping off the wagon try to hop on.

What UM needs are more strong positional coaches who can recruit and develop talent. McElwain and other P5 coaches certainly understand the process - they might not achieve it but they understand it. JH can scheme circles around any opposing coaches. He made a joke of Urban’s defensive schemes the last 3 years - the QB, WR and OL execution were so poor that even superior schemes were negated. Heck, Urban has picked recruiters first and skill developers second. Is this “up and coming” coach a great recruiter! If so, then hire him. If it’s his schemes, then big deal.
