Big Ten Coaches Anonymously Preview Michigan vs. Alabama

Submitted by Leaders And Best on December 18th, 2023 at 2:08 PM

The Athletic's Bruce Feldman did a preview on Michigan's chances vs Alabama by interviewing Big Ten coaches anonymously. The result is about what you would expect. I hope the coaches have this article plastered all over Schembechler Hall. The short version: a lot of bagging on our offense, but admiration for our defense.

Article is paywalled:

Some snippets:

Despite a dramatic regular season punctuated by an investigation over alleged sign-stealing, No. 1 Michigan rolled to a 13-0 record heading into the College Football Playoff matchup in the Rose Bowl against No. 4 Alabama. But college football coaches The Athletic spoke to for this scouting report are convinced Michigan hasn’t been the same team since the NCAA’s investigation became public.

“They’re different now,” said one Big Ten head coach. “It makes a huge difference to know when blitzes are coming, so when you pick it up, you can really attack it. After that (investigation and resignation of staffer Connor Stalions), they weren’t always at the right place at the right time.”

The Athletic interviewed 10 Big Ten coaches, scouts and analysts to break down Michigan and how it matches up with a late-blooming Alabama team. They were granted anonymity to provide candid observations about the Wolverines.

Scouting the O-line: The best in the Big Ten

“That O-line looks pretty. They’re like three deep of pretty guys, but you watch the film and Indiana stuffed them,” one of the defensive analysts said. “They’re not moving you off the ball like you’d think.”

“I think Alabama will give them trouble with their front,” a Big Ten head coach added.

Despite this decline, most of the coaches still viewed Michigan’s offensive line as the best in the Big Ten. “They’re big and very sound fundamentally and disciplined,” said one of the head coaches. “They’ll check Alabama’s oil.”

Who wins: Michigan or Alabama?

Michigan opened as a two-point favorite over Alabama, but the line is down to one in some places. Alabama being the underdog didn’t seem right to most of the coaches, and the majority believe Alabama will beat Michigan. Some of that might be due to the fact that Michigan has lost each of its two Playoff semifinal games, and Harbaugh’s six consecutive losses in bowl games is glaring.

“What has Jim learned?” a Big Ten head coach asked. “Are his guys gonna be fresh and ready to go or worn down?”

“I think it’s the same old thing with Michigan,” said a Big Ten secondary coach. “They’re extremely talented, but if someone can hold up up front with them, I think they’re just too one-dimensional. … They’ve got to get explosive plays on the perimeter somewhere, and those are gonna be hard to come by because Alabama can match up with them outside and still be stern enough against the run.

“Michigan is going to have to play such a clean game.”

One head coach said he wouldn’t be shocked if Michigan won — but he’s picking Alabama. “If Milroe plays like he has lately, I think that’ll be too much for Michigan. There’s nobody like him in the Big Ten. (Alabama) has figured out how to use him, and that’s scary.”

Another head coach did point out that Michigan has the “kind of stuff” that keeps the Wolverines winning — after all, Michigan is 13-0 despite its head coach being suspended for almost half of the season, including during its toughest stretch.

“They don’t have any superstars, but they’re strong and they’ve got a bunch of really good college players,” he said. “They have a really good culture. None of them gives a s— who gets the credit. These guys clearly love playing with each other. They have the chemistry to win a championship.”

There’s legit criticisms to be leveled at Harbaugh and Michigan, especially on offense.

I’m not surprised in the least, tbh. These are the kinds of comments you get when your QB throws 1 TD and 1 INT over the last 5 games of the season. We ARE 1-dimensional. We AREN’T “peaking” at the right time like Alabama is.

These quotes sound like Tweets. And don’t forget that James Franklin & co. LOVE to volunteer to badmouth Michigan.

They are talking about this on the M-Zone (WTKA).

My comments about this article- What a bunch of weasels- these Big 10 coaches. These are the same bunch responsible for Jim's second 3 game suspension.

No way will I cheer for ANY Big-10 team in the upcoming bowl season. I hope that they ALL lose. I really want to see BGSU with former M coach Scott Loeffler beat the row your boat MN Golden Gophers.

It's still Michigan vs everybody! More bulletin board material.

As for singling out some of our players, I would ask these Big-10 coaches- So you wouldn't want any of these guys starting on your team?

Peace-out!

We interviewed Big Ten coaches, scouts and analysts to break down Michigan and how it has gone about winning three straight conference championships. They were granted anonymity so they could provide candid observations about their own programs.

"We've tried everything" said one anonymous coach. "We've tried playing soft vanilla defenses, we've pressed our safeties and blitzed, we've changed coordinators to get a new perspective. Nothing works, they just run it down our throats whatever we do."

"We've got their practice video, I've even had my guys rummaging through their garbage cans and it doesn't do any good" said another. "Hell, we even brought in our own guy as commissioner and got Harbaugh booted for three games and they kept on winning. At some point I'm going to have to admit I'm apparently not very good at my job."

Another unnamed coach from a world famous university said “I can handle things. I'm smart. Not like everybody says, like dumb. I'm smart and I want respect!  And I’m tough!”

He continued, “My game plan was really smart, but that quarterback lost the game for us”

Good point and I wanted to mention this in my comment above. Add to the toughest part of the regular season schedule is that a few key starters were banged up (JJ, Will Johnson, and Zinter, out for the season).

Last I recall is Michigan is still 13-0 so far this year. And, who's ranked #1?

For all the hand-wringing, some of the comments seem fairly accurate.

Michigan's offense was really one-dimensional down the stretch:

  • The oline has been suspect at best at times, in particular with pass-rush.
  • JJ was hurt against PSU and has simply not looked as locked-in as he was for most of the year, not progressing through reads and not hitting some of the throws that became very routine
  • Edwards disappears during stretches of games with bad reads, missed pass-blocking assignments, etc

I would not be surprised if Michigan has potentially worked the players too hard leading up to bowl games - but no evidence of it.

My hope is that they do work on being creative and think of the offense as a way to attack and win vs. as a statistically sound way to force their will onto Alabama as I simply don't think this oline has the ability to let Michigan only throw 8 passes against Alabama & win.

Get the kids rested and healed, work on fundamentals and open it up a bit would be fun to watch, but if Michigan tries the 95% of 1st and 2nd down snaps are Corum or Edwards between the tackles, it is likely going to be a long game.

Down the stretch the Michigan offense...

  • scored more points than every other Nebraska opponent
  • scored more points than every other Minnesota opponent
  • scored more points than every other Indiana opponent
  • scored more points than every other Michigan St. opponent
  • scored at least as many points as every other Purdue opponent
  • scored at least as many points as every other Penn St. opponent
  • scored more points than every other Ohio St. opponent
  • scored more points than 11 of Iowa's 12 other opponents

The only games Michigan didn't outscore at least all but one of an opponent's opponents were Maryland and the first four. To me it didn't seem like the offense was worse down the stretch; we played three top-five FEI defenses in the last four games.

The only game you can say that about JJ is Maryland.

He was 21-27 against MSU

24-37 against Purdue

7-8 against PSU

12-23 against Maryland

16-20 against OSU

22-30 against Iowa (with two big drops and another two where receivers had their hands on the ball but didn't pull it in)

He completed 65% of his passes in every game but the trappiest of trap games.

What makes me laugh is there are still college educated coaches in our league that truly believe we only won because of sign stealing. The ignorance or arrogance of some of these guys is phenomenal.

I love this and certainly hope a copy is placed is each player's locker.

I respect Bama - they are a good football team, I don't question that.   I also have great respect for Team 144 and am confident in their ability to execute.

I hope everyone picks Bama.  I hope the Vegas line shifts to Bama's favor.   Let all the naysayers out there just "rain down" how Michigan can't keep up with Bama.   I'm wondering which analysts / commenters will have any comment about Helow - which has to be good for at least seven points.

Let's not forget - Bama has a much better head coach than Michigan too.

On the head coach thing - what was Saban's record when he coached on Sundays?   How about Harbaugh's?  Yeah, I'm "more than good" with Harbaugh leading Michigan.

Michgan against Everybody - and, let's begin on January 1st.

Michigan defeated PSU by more in State College - with "suspension notice" happening as the team landed less than 24 hours before that game - than the Buckeyes did "at home" in Columbus.

Just look at the B1G CCG - Michigan "only scored" 26 points - and, they covered according to those fine folks in Las Vegas.

Michigan vs everyone....

I read this when it came out. Totally predictable crock of BS. Feldman is starting to look more and more like your typical clickbaiting hack. He sounds smooth and all but he has no problem shamelessly milking the bogus sign stealing "scandal" that every credible coach knows is nonsense.

Also, the BIG has some serious whiners for coaches.

Amazinblu

Feldman's been predicting that Harbaugh's moving on to the NFL for weeks.

And - here's his rationale.   If Michigan wins it all - he's gone.   If Michigan doesn't win it all - he's gone.

So, it looks like we have the answer to our question.   Which is - Feldman's not worth listening to.

Some of them still think it was only sign-stealing that gave Michigan an advantage. No wonder they're still just head coaches at Nebraska, Purdue, Indiana, Rutgers. You know - the teams that suck year after year.

Enjoy your 5 years of head coaching boys before you go off to be a linebacker coach / D-line coach assistant at an NFL team at best.

First of all, to hell with the Big Ten and to hell with these coaches. I hope every Big Ten school in a bowl game loses, except us of course. They can all burn.

That being said, except for the bullshit leading comment about Stallions, the comments that are posted aren't wrong. The OL is great but has been somewhat disappointing compared to '21 and '22. Alabama's DL will have success. Also, Jim does need to take the TCU game -- especially the first half to heart -- and learn from his mistakes in bowl prep and in-game coaching. If we have a first half like the TCU game, it's gonna be a long day.

And then the one positive bit -- was that Ferentz or Fleck?

Anyway, I don't think this will matter much. It's Michigan versus everybody and this team is strong enough to withstand it all. Coaches, put 'em in the right position to succeed, and I'm thinking they will.

The coach still trying to make signs a thing is not long for his job, but the one repeating "pretty" with the loud homophobic undertones is really something. I hope parents know not to let their kids play for that creep.

My absolute favorite quote:

***Checks Notes****

Since the Stallions firing we have proceeded to beat the #1, #3 and #5 Defenses- according to foxsports stats.

It is interesting how early in the season when Michigan struggled to run the ball against teams that were blitzing LB's and safeties while JJ torched them through the air, the narrative was that Michigan couldn't run the ball, and later on when defenses focused more on taking away downfield passing and the run game improved but JJ's stats weren't as great it became "oh JJ isn't good without Connor Stalions" lol.

Fact is, defenses have adapted to Michigan's running game by loading the box.  It doesn't mean the OL hasn't been playing well (in fact besides the OSU game they've been pretty consistently well above the Mendoza line).  Difference from last year is we've faced more heavy boxes and the RB's have not been as great at generating explosives.  However, we have been able to punish teams (at least for most of the season) with PA, JJ's legs, and Loveland and WIlson being difficult 1 on 1 covers.

Now, it is completely fair to wonder if Alabama has the horses to play aggressively in the box AND take away the passing attack, especially given the quality of their secondary and edge rushers (not to mention Saban).  But "Indiana stuffed them" screams willful ignorance.

One of the more frustrating parts of the article was reading a coach say “You ain’t gonna big boy Alabama,” and fearing that our offensive braintrust will see that as a hill to die upon. Let JJ cook!

I think the comments made about specific players were largely, if not universally, correct. And I think it is true that Alabama has more talent, especially if defined by stars or draft picks. But that could be said of OSU also. This team has been more than the sum of its parts all year. As one of the coaches said, we will need JJ to play a great and mistake-free game.

Weird.. When I woke up today I thought to myself "I wonder what all of the loser coaches who are not the three peat Big Ten champions think of Michigan football". Then I realized that I didn't think of any of that, and just stubbed my toe on the bed post is all.

The funniest part about this article is, unless they are talking to OSU's coaches exclusively, they are talking to someone who got there ass absolutely kicked. It makes the hate sound even funnier knowing that. Nebraska, Minnesota, MSU? PSU lmfao

Well, they are likely sending Bama all of the intel that they have on Michigan, since colluding against us is the only thing they did well this year.  13 against 1 and they still couldn’t beat us.  What a pathetic conference.  “Please help us, Mr. Saban, sir.”
