Best thing you saw: Week 10

I LIKE BIG JUGS AND I CANNOT LIE

What an incredible day of games.  So much awesome, it's too much to put it all in one place.  To the brief discussion...

Non-M: MSU-PSU was a great slugfest in which neither team leaned on their great backs enough.  Iowa did THAT.  Clemson-NC St, ISU-WVU, OU-OSU, Stan-WSU, and I owe YTM an apology - I posted earlier that I see them as a paper tiger.  They convincingly took care of business.  All that said, the best thing I saw non-M was college football.  Period.  It was so good in all the places.

M: The opening drive was a beauty.  The run game mauled.  Still, I'm going with the D - specifically Khaleke Hudson.  Dude was, well, a dude.  Looking forward to the continued growth of this young team the next couple weeks.

So...what you got?

The fake field goal from the formation we used to call "the swinging gate" formation in high school, had to be my favorite. I played high school ball in the late 90s in Phoenix and would see at least 3 teams a year line up in that formation for Pat and sone field goals. I always thought it was a dumb waste of time because it always resulted in them swinging the line back down and lining up normal. To see Iowa of all teams actually run a fake out of it was the most awesome thing to happen in that game filled with awesome things.

I commented in the other thread how it was the most un-Ferentz thing I had ever seen from Iowa.  It was a thing of beauty.  There is a write up over at SB Nation that tries to give more detail on the origins of the formation.  Given your history, you might enjoy it.

I doubt the B1G makes the CoFoPoff - unless a lot of other stuff happens.  Everyone in the East has 2+ losses and I think the 3-4 top teams would/could beat the Badgers - not that Wisconsin can't make it.  Even with a B1G win in Indy, Wisconsin's resume will likely only be enough if they're one of the last 2 undefeateds.

Think it probably winds up being the PAC10 and B1G left out. Really only UW and other UW left at this point and neither is getting much love due to soft schedules. Then you're probably looking at ND, Clemson/Miami and Oklahoma battling it out. I don't see Georgia being left out given the head to head advantage over ND and the probability of them keeping it pretty close against Alabama because the tide offense isn't that explosive and just kind of grinds people out.

It was crazy. Msu sells out to stop the run, and has a shaky secondary. Their strength is the DT's. So, naturally, psu decides to not only run but do it right at the DT's. There is a reason why I was not made at Michigan coaches for passing so much in the pouring rain. You simply have to against MSU, we learned as much in 15 when OSU decided to never pass because of bad weather and lost despite being a far better team that year. You have to attack them in the intermediate and deep passing game, which psu did in the second half last year. Yet, they forgot this yesterday after the rain for the most part. I do not know how it happens but it always seems to happen I'm big time conference games.

Hudson and the Michigan running game plus Cesar Ruiz stepping in and playing well. Brandon Peters even if he was on a leash and did I mention the running game. Predictable but unstoppable.

It's all mental versus Ohio State.

Michigan has been mental midgets against them for years.   The 3rd and 10 play last year, giving up 9 yards and a play that should have been a loss of 10. The Cole facemask as we are about to go up 17.

Iowa is one of the most braindead programs in the country and they absolutely destroyed Ohio State.

Sorry, but the fucking excuses are pretty much up.

Michigan needs to get amped up and show some venegance.

Ohio State will have the East division crown wrapped up when we play them.

It is time to win.

They’ll have the east wrapped up when we play them? That’s not entirely true.

They could absolutely lose to MSU if they play next week the way they played last night. It’s possible this year’s version of The Game just comes down to a battle for pride.

2.  fellow mgoblogger 'scanner blue' (true name: carl) at gate 10, gifts in hand.  what a champ!

3.  (almost) seeing robf again - see you in 3 weeks when we beat ohio.

4.  the totally unpredicted monster monsoon stopping, the skies calming, and the bright lights of the big house when we played a very solid game and got a "W" in what turned out to be a perfectly comfortable night.

5.  safe, mostly dry drive home.  it was fast, too.

Think so, yeah. We’re tied with PSU now, but they have the tiebreaker. MSU has only one conference loss, and it’s not even a divisional loss. So I think we’d need them to lose twice. So, we’d need to:

-Win out (obviously)
-PSU needs to lose one more time, which could happen now that they’ve had two gut punches two weeks in a row. How do they respond now that all of their goals are pretty much out of reach?
-Nothing needs to happen with OSU. If we win out and beat them we have the tiebreaker.
-I think MSU will need to lose two more times. Their ND loss means nothing for the conference title. They own the tiebreaker over both UM and PSU, and while they could lose to OSU next week, they’d also have to lose to either Maryland or Rutgers, which probably isn’t going to happen. Sigh.....what could’ve been this season.

None of this is a likely scenario, but it’s far more likely than it was two weeks ago. Anyway, beat OSU and then let the rest of the chips fall where they may.

That monumental fail of a game by UM against MSU earlier this season is looming really huge right now. That loss hurt terribly at the time and is only getting worse. If UM hadn't choked that game away with a -5 TO margin, they would be in control of their own destiny for the division title.

Ugh. I need to lie down now.

If there were a 4 way tie, I think MSU would play in the B1G championship game because their other loss would be from the West division.

I could be wrong but if you look at the tie breakers here the first tie breaker in a 3+ way tie is overall record. Given that MSU and OSU have non-conference losses, I think we need three things to happen:

  1. We win out
  2. OSU beats everyone except us (obviously including MSU)
  3. Penn State loses again.

That way there would be a three way tie between us, OSU, and MSU and we would win being 10-2 vs their 9-3.

You are misinterpreting that. The first tiebreaker is "1.    The records of the three tied teams will be compared against each other."

Which means how did MSU/OSU/Michigan do against each other?

Michigan would be 1-1, OSU would be 1-1, MSU would be 1-1, so it moves on to #2 which is record within division. Michigan would be eliminated in that instance since they have two divisional losses.

Overall record isn't until the seventh tiebreaker: The team with the best overall winning percentage [excluding exempted games] shall be the representative

Higdon and the return of long runs. Let's not forget that Higdon was committed to Iowa before making the switch to Michigan. Evans was great too.
