Best Ever Sunday Brunch - Where do you go?

Submitted by xtramelanin on October 11th, 2020 at 2:25 PM

Mates,

Sunday brunch is a longtime tradition for many.  I mention it today in particular because our kids made one that might be the best I've ever had:  venison chili and cheese omelettes along with pumpkin chocolate chip pancakes.  With apple butter.  And syrup.  That was dynamite.

To our question though, where is/was the best Sunday Brunch you ever had?  Do you prefer Zingerman's?  What about your local greasy-spoon that serves up surprisingly good stuff?  Is there a chain restaurant that gets it done for you?

No lions playing today to turn your stomach, so weigh in on this beautiful fall Sunday.

We used to like Deer Lake Inn in Clarkston in the old days and a place in Lake Orion before that on M-24 whose name escapes me. Haven't had a good brunch in decades.

Ha, what a spot on post. My wife and I are hanging in Del Mar for brunch.  Not my favorite, but will do the trick.

all time favorite was la Valencia in La Jolla before they sold the hotel.

Any of 15 or 20 places in NOLA (and I don’t even like brunch) and in my experience any non-NOLA brunch place is a very distant 21st. Brunch there isn’t just an institution, it’s a lifestyle perfected over 100s of years of practice. One reason I don’t really like breakfast/lunch is that there are only so many ways to combine eggs, cheese, meat, potatoes and bread. There isn’t any one brunch in NOLA like another, and the variety and incredible diversity of ingredients will have me readily abandon my firm no brunch policy. If you go, Commander’s Palace for upscale, Le Petit Grocery for a slightly less formal neighborhood joint. I think I now need to book a flight.

It’s been a few years but my most memorable brunch was as the Phoenician in Scottsdale. Everything you could imagine plus an entire dessert room that included made to order individual soufflés. I was there on the company dime, so that made it even tastier!

Moonshine in Austin. The food was great, but I asked my wife to marry me an hour before, so I could have gone to Denny’s and been happy. I made a whole deal out of it, set up a thing at this fancy estate in town that has peacocks roaming around, but it delayed brunch (I got the timing off an hour), and my soon-to-be fiancée was nearing “hangry” levels. Thankfully, once she started piecing things together, she pulled it together haha. But, hell, those mimosas we drank later went down like victory mimosas!

My top two:

-- Trader Vic's at the New Otani Hotel in central Tokyo.

-- The Grand Hotel on Mackinaw Island.

In Ft. Wayne there is a Latin American place called Proximo.  Great food and they serve a drink called Milk Punch.  My favorite there is Carnitas Benedict.  Amazing brunch.

Three plus decades ago I had a great brunch at Oakland Hills Country Club. Don’t ask me what I ate, I just recall loving it and that there was syrup. They also had those chocolate mints that as a boy I gobbled up.

when I lived in Hong Kong and had a decent job, there was a higher end Japanese place with a sunday brunch that included all you could eat sushi/sashimi, a noodle bar, and free flow Veuve Clicquot. Wasn't cheap but damn those were good times

We like Sava for game day breakfast at the bar.  The brunch is outstanding on Sunday.  Sava is it for us in Ann Arbor - best brunch and breakfast.  Bloody’s are to die for.
