Cleveland had to do something to be semi relevant in the media. Because their team sure as hell won’t be.

Beilein didn't hire JB Bickerstaff. The Cavs decided he needed to work with an experienced NBA coach and didn't leave the choice up to him. Bickerstaff had interviewed for the HC job and is reportedly now the highest paid assistant in the NBA. His brother works in the front office, an interesting situation.

I wonder how much autonomy Beilein has over the rest of his staff.

Beilein also didn’t seem like the guy to say he was a Wolverine for life then the very next year bolt for the worst job in the NBA. The NBA is an entertainment business as much as it is a basketball organization, they need publicity somehow.

We've had Lebron on our team not once, but twice and then leave, not once, but twice.  We made the NBA finals four straight years and won the first championship the city of Cleveland has had in over 50 years.

One of our players is (was?) dating a Kardashian and Kevin Love is basically a male model.   We had Kyrie who thinks the world is flat, JR who cant remember the score in the last seconds of an NBA finals and Kendrick Perkins who, even though he wasnt playing - wanted to fight both other players and Drake.

We had a head coach try and call a time out he didnt have only to be stopped by his assistant in a playoff game. He got fired after making the NBA finals his rookie year.  We had that assistant get promoted, win an NBA title and then get promptly fired when the shell of a team that was left after Lebron's latest departure couldnt win.

We have a owner who has never extended a GM contract, fancies himself an expert talent evaluator but has now suffered a stroke and we have no clue what condition's he's in.

We dont need or want "media attention" for a little while thank you very much.  If Beilein hired her, I'm sure she's got the goods coaching-wise.

Hmm, somebody in the thread mentioned she's just, you know, like a woman, and you say she's a girl.....

maybe she coaches just like a woman

yes she does, she Kevin loves like a woman

yes she does, then she headfakes just like a woman

but she fast breaks just like a little girl

(apologies to bob)

Awesome to see. I'm sure she's more than qualified. Congrats to Coach Gottlieb for getting the job and good on Beilein for hiring her.

You're SURE she is more than qualified?  You didn't even know who the fuck she was five minutes ago.  Having a vagina no more makes you 'surely qualified' for a job than having a penis does.

She is an average coach in an average women's college program.

Besides, NCAA women's basketball and the NBA are barely even the same game.  Men's baseball and women softball are more alike and they are two separate games.

Just accept that this is Adam Silver's clumsy attempt at forcing women into coaching positions and move on.

Maybe he's sure because he trusts Beilein to be a good evaluator? Maybe he trusts that Beilein wouldnt do this as a stunt?

The real question is why are you so worked up about this and why are you so sure that she's unqualified. Smells a little misogynistic to me

His?  How down you even know what sex they are?  Did you just assume their gender?

Why don't you just call them a racist and homophobic too, you have the same amount of evidence to back that up.

The problem are people who can't hear a dissenting opinion without lumping others into derogatory groups so they don't have to be bothered with actually using logic and reason to refute their arguments.  Or worse yet, people who simply can't deal with the simple fact that there are others who don't share their brainwashing.

Everyone who says something that rubs up against a pre-set belief systems is a misogynistic, homophobic, racist, or xenophobic.  All easy words meant to deflect us from having to actually use our brains and prove our arguments.

It's such lazy, pathetic, and millennial, thinking.

I have no idea if Lindsay Gottleib is a good coach or why JB wanted her but if Michigan was going to hire a coach with her record, everyone here would be pitching a fit.  Calling someone a misogynist for posting her very average record and questioning motive when Adam Silver made it abundantly clear that he is pushing coaches to hire women, is really dumb and plainly ignorant of the situation.

The problem isn't "millenials" not being able to handle a dissenting opinion. The problem in this specific instance is people with antiquated world views who can't handle the fact that a woman may be qualified to do a job that is considered a man's job. These same people then fall back on the "young people can't handle my truth" defense when common sense and common decency is yelling in their face otherwise.

You even said you have no idea how good a coach Gottlieb is. Yet you felt the need to come here and post about how this probably a result of Adam Silver forcing women coaches into the league, ignoring the possibility that she may be qualified on her own.

Yes, some people here would be upset if Beilein hired her at Michigan. I'm sure you and Harbs would be front and center. But as many comments here have shown, many of us would not be angry. But keep projecting your own insecurities on everyone else.

But you're right, the problem is everyone else and not you.

...within 4 sentences of...

"It's such lazy, pathetic, and millennial, thinking."

 ...is awesome.

I'm sure because she's been a D1 assistant or head coach for 20 years despite only being 41. I'm sure because despite you calling her an average coach, she's taken Cal to 7 tournaments in 8 years including a Final Four. And most importantly, I'm sure because Beilein hired her and we all know how good of a judge of talent/character he in, both in a basketball sense and an everyday life sense.

You're right that there are massive differences between the men's and women's game, but most of that is a product of the lacking athleticism in the women's game comparatively. The fundamentals in the two games are the same, and 20 years coaching the women's game makes me think she more than knows what to do there.

Also you're a sexist moron who needs to recalibrate your world view and priorities.

I'm sure she's a great lady but the difference between NCAA men's and women basketball is night and day.  They are barely even the same game.  There is another huge leap from the NCAA men's to the NBA.  This and the fact that she isn't exactly Pat Summit when it comes to record and success makes this decision feel ADAM SILVERISH.

I know a lot of you dislike Beilein now for cheating on you or whatever, but I wonder if this is the result of the same kind of outside-the-box thinking that led him to recruit kids that were young for their class. If you can figure out what kind of talent is being overlooked for bad reasons, you can tap into an unexplored market, and you can feast.
