Beat Indiana in Assembly Hall. That’s all I got.
I said alleged for a reason.
Who is alleging that other than you in an effort to bash the team? I’ve seen more posters here alleging he’s a net negative than our second best player.
He's just making a point. Not a post to really beef with.
Exciting game!
Fucking dog shit officiating in OT cost us a trip to the touney.
Within 24 hours, Ivey calls a Chris Webber TO losing it for the Pistons, then there was the Michigan 2OT heartbreaker ( no comment), and then there was enough time to watch a weak call slashing allowing the Kraken to beat the Wings on a 4 -3 power play in OT.
Just another game we let slip away. Players did what they could. Sometimes a coach has to have a hand in the game. I didn't like our timeout usage all game and OT. I was yelling at the TV for a timeout when HD thought he was KD. A timeout there and we probably win the game. That was a chaotic sequence and it was right in front of Juwan.
I usually don't blame the refs but they definitely gave Shannon the MJ treatment late in the game. I thought that first And 1 call on Reed was super weak, light contact before the shot. Even the HD offensive foul should be a no call.
I hope Bufkins stays another year. Hopefully he becomes our Shannon next year.
Yeah, I don't quite think we should be shitting on individual players in thread titles. The team, the coaching, is mediocre... and has been for 2 straight seasons. This loss isn't on Baker. This loss isn't on Jett. This loss isn't on Hunter's 3 missed (key) free throws, and 5 turnovers. This loss isn't on Tschetter starting. This loss isn't on having a freshman point guard. This loss isn't totally on Coach Howard. This loss, like most, are team losses. This team, and this staff just can't consistently perform at a high level. When the coaching is good (last play), the players don't execute. When the players are playing well (end of regulation), the coaching is bad. Maybe good fortune will shine upon us in the BIG Ten Tournament. If not, no NCAA's for us.
I probably wouldn’t rag the dude in the thread title. He’s just not a great high level college player.
I still think the defensive drop-off from Reed/Williams/ and even Baker to Jett is big enough that Jett could stand to play less. I get that he hit a big three and a couple of other threes, but he’s bad on the ball, he’s bad with switching, he’s bad at boxing out, he’s bad at chasing rebounds, and he fouls a bunch for a guy that’s often not very close the dude he’s guarding. I mean, he managed to two hand shove an IL player right in front of a ref and the IL guy still got the loose ball! At least foul with purpose my dude.
Having an extra timeout when IL was on their dunk show run would have been nice. I’m not sure it would have mattered, but if you want to point to an egregious mistake, that end of half timeout was something special.
I thought the boys played their butts off and were victimized by their own failures in one area no one ever talks about: loose balls. They are terrible at getting 50-50 balls in any situation, offensive or defensive caroms.
They just don't get them and they give up more rebounds when it matters than most Michigan teams I've seen. Part of that is having such a young team, with a freshman point guard.
Jett Howard fouls out because of a loose ball he couldn't reach.
I don't want to denigrate the effort and tenacity of this team. They never showed any give up against the Illini. And we had a chance to tie in the second OT but HD couldn't hit the free throw on the back end of a three-point play. This might have been HD's greatest effort games as a Wolverine. I salute him.
This defeat rivals the one against Iowa on the road. Sad loss, very sad.
I do agree with that. We seem to lose 90% of the 50-50 balls.
In the first half Jett literally gave up on a loose ball in which he had a step on Shannon to grab. He's a diva.
Better athletes who play their butt off win most 50-50 balls. Shannon is just a better athlete than Jett.
Jet is extremely stiff and that was his knock in high school. People tried to claim he had developed into a playmaker and not just a shooter at the end of his senior year. He is just a shooter and its quite evident.
True. This team doesn't consistently put a body on guys when shots go up. They also seem to end up chasing after everything a step slow. But it is better than it was a couple months ago. There were times then when they looked completely overwhelmed.
Michigan is a flawed team.4 legit Big 10 starters ,3 are rookies plus T.Will and Reed.T.Will is not a Big 10 caliber player and Reed is a foul prone player currently limited to def/reb.Michigan has VERY little coming off the bench compared to other Big 10 teams. To be in 2nd place tie with a game to go is about as good as you can expect. An excruciatingly hard team to be emotionally attached to.
It's hard to get angry about the last shot air ball when we had chances in regulation and OT to win. Our guy just didn't make a shot when it mattered most. That's not a criticism, that's just the way it played out.
But giving up a 7 paint lead in less than 2 minutes is hard to accept.
Baker's shot was the best look we could have possibly gotten. Perfectly drawn up. But to be honest I'm more frustrated that Dickinson missed the baby hook from 3 feet to win it. That shot probably accounts for 70% of his Juwan surpassing career total. Even with 3 guys around him I expect him to make that. And the free throws at the end of the game for that matter.
Why Joey Why
Gaaaaaaa such a frustrating loss. Was in the palm of our hands twice. Brutal.
Boys played their asses off. Tip of the cap there , but damn we had a lot of opportunities to win that game.
Bring that same energy Saturday and get the that W
Since this is a snowflakes, I’d also like to complain about Brad Underwood. Guy is rolling up and down the court like a stability ball, uncontrollably screaming one inch away from the face of each ref and nary a Fran Mccaffery esque stare down from Carstensen. Ridiculous what he was able to get away with tonight
Fran, Underwood and Izzo can murder someone and nothing will happen.
B1G really needs to crack down on it, but they won't because the conference blows.
I mean I get bitching about bad calls and god knows how many Big Ten officials make, but dude was a raving lunatic all night even on obviously right calls. Asking for a hook and hold on Hunter when it wasn't even remotely close to one was just comical and cringeworthy as well. But it is just another layer to the god awful inconsistencies in Big Ten officiating that certain coaches are essentially given free reign to act like lunatics. Just interesting how certain coaches turn supposedly grown men into spineless cowards honestly.
Amazing how Harbaugh got a technical in a game that doesnt have technicals but these coaches never get one. Very strange.
I hate to say it because I think he's great and getting better. But the mistake that cost us that game more than any other was Reid giving up two and ones on consecutive possessions while leading in overtime
Reed fouling the 3 point shooter was a huge mistake as well.
This is a shit post. I don't think he played well, but no need to make a thread just to bash him. He played hard, he didn't hit the shots, it is what it is.
I can't remember a Michigan team that took so many bad shots. The number of times they wildly fling the ball towards the rim, sometimes without even being remotely close to squared up, is so frustrating. It's astonishing how little it's improved over the course of the season. Everyone's been talking about the improvement Dug has made in taking care of the ball in the last handful of games, but the turnover numbers don't factor in terrible shot selection in key moments. The absolute last guy I want taking a shot in momentum swinging moments. Unfortunately there's not really a guy I can say I definitely do want in that scenario. Our end of game meltdowns are a direct result of that lack of a consistent playmaker with the stones to take over a game. Thought it was Dickinson tonight but he's disappeared for long stretches this season and unfortunately with the best possible chance to win the game (deep in the paint with a chance to take his patented baby hook) he came up short. This team just doesn't have the mental toughness of teams from the 2010s.
Jett is taking that 3 in 2nd OT if he didn't commit those 5 fouls ,mostly a byproduct of being out of position on def..Another point often overlooked is those early in a half fouls ( looking at you Cheddar) lead to opponents getting into the bonus earlier.Michigan opps.seem to be getting to the line more often.
Just think, if it wasn't for our administration we would of had Shannon on the team and went 18-2 on the B1G!
Is there still a way to send individual accounts to my own personal Bolivia? There are some that would be nice to mute.
I didn't watch the game, but I understand the Joey Baker didn't hit a shot at the end. I think the title of this post is inappropriate and I'm glad the OP is getting negged. There are ups and downs in sports and in life. Mocking a kid who is playing for your team isn't cool. He'll get less playing time if he isn't getting it done.
I felt like my soul left my body when he airballed it. So many moments you can point to and say “if that just went differently we win.” Such a devastating loss. Go Blue!!!
Not that we didn't EFF ourselves with our play, but those two Illinois and-1s were daggers and OF COURSE THEY WENT IN.
I suspect the OP is not-so-secretly happy we lost this game so he could post this thread.
Joey Baker's airball isn't the reason Michigan lost last night. It was a bad final shot, but there is plenty of blame to go around. Poor rebounding, particularly on that final offensive possession for Illinois where Jett fouled out and Illinois got to go up by three. Aside from Illinois hitting an actual three pointer, that was the worst possible outcome Michigan could've asked for, as it drained precious seconds off the clock, and Illinois was near lethal from the free throw line last night.
Letting Illinois claw back being down seven in OT1, with a minute forty to go, was a back breaker. But Illinois let it happen in regulation as well, so I'd say you can call that even.
I didn't get to see the whole game last night, but I saw enough of it to see that Illinois was getting a lot of really easy baskets. I'm guessing something with the defense is going to need to change in the offseason.
