Austin Peay figured out a way to beat the system

Austin Peay University, is already calling it a season after just three games — and lots of money coming in to get beat up by some bigger schools. According to Saturday Down South, Austin Peay, which actually won 11 games in the FCS in 2019 and reached the league’s quarterfinals in the postseason, decided to axe their fall campaign after getting blown out by Central Arkansas, Pittsburgh and Cincinnati by a collective score of 134-37. But with the FCS looking to have a spring football season this year — which Austin Peay hopes to play in — the team decided it’d go get its ass kicked by a couple big boys before taking the fall and winter off, making out with some serious money for the Athletics Department in the process.

I don't know if this is "beating the system" smaller programs rely on the money from playing bigger opponents because it's pretty expensive to run a football program.

It does kind of suck for the players though.

I disagree. Sure it's no fun getting the crap kicked out of you, but at least they got a chance to try and measure up to some FBS schools. Now they also get to go play against their regular opponents in the FCS.  Might be disappointing to not finish an FBS year, but at least they won't be getting the tar kicked out of them the rest of the fall.

How much money did Austin Peay take in for playing Central Arkansas in front of a mostly empty stadium? Not sure why their other opponents would shell out a lot of money either.

It sounds more like they are trying to get an advantage on the field by playing extra games and getting extra practices.

I believe the Campbell Fighting Camels are doing something similar. They have 4 games scheduled with Georgia Southern (almost won that one), Coastal Carolina, App State and Wake Forest. I assume if their conference and FCS move forward with spring ball they will play then as well.

Austin Peay only had three games scheduled. There are only 15 or so FCS teams playing (out of 126) in the fall. Most of those 15 teams are only playing 4 games or less. Central Arkansas has 10 games scheduled - against 8 opponent - with 2 home-and-away games against the same team. North Dakota State only has one game on their schedule.

Side note - Army has nine home games on the schedule and after BYU cancelled their game with Army last Saturday - Army was trying to get Central Arkansas to come play that week (after it was announced that the Central Arkansas vs Arkansas State game had been postponed).

Crazy times.
