Are all Michigan players on South Africa trip?

Submitted by StephenRKass on May 7th, 2019 at 12:53 PM

I just watched a short video clip posted at Wolverineswire.com of the South Africa trip. I really love each and every trip they've taken the last few years. This was a nice clip of Michigan players with South African kids, teaching a bit of football.

I was curious, watching the clip, if the entire team went. I know from previous years that walk ons were on the trips to Italy and France, which makes sense. I also remember a few players opting out, for various reasons (coursework, family commitments, etc.) I'm wondering if any active players didn't go this year. I'm also wondering if anyone went who has retired from football (St. Juste,) graduated (Peters) or is considering a transfer (Sims.)

Something I read recently helped me to see that there is a fair amount of camaraderie, even with guys who leave the team for various reasons. Everyone wants to play and see the field. You can't blame someone at all for leaving who is buried on the depth chart, especially like Peters.

Nope and it's high time somebody started some transfer rumors about those that didnt go IMO.

I mean what other reason could there be for somebody not taking an extended overseas trip other than that?

It seems like the kids should be able to get credits for these trips.   They are packed with historical and cultural learning.

Are you sure they don't?

This seems like a good place to ask something I've wondered about. Obviously, these trips are legal. M must have run it by their attorneys before the first one, Saban, Meyer and Dantonio are all aware of them and haven't raised any objections, it's so open even the NCAA must be aware of them and hasn't said anything (OK, that doesn't prove anything). As a casual observer, this looks to me like they are giving an extra benefit to members of the football team that isn't generally available to students. Does anyone know what the legal justification is for the trips? I wonder if this is part of the syllabus for the one credit class that FB players take.

Don’t think they’ll ever post an official list, you’ll have to look for pics, videos and players tweets/Instagram posts.

Two big time players that I know did not attend are DPJ and Tarik Black

Glad that Brandon was able to go.

With a group this size, seems like there would always be a few who have other commitments etc. Lot of families have travel plans right now as well.

Great for CROOTIN!

It doesn't look they all went. Haven't seen Tarik Black or DPJ at all probably due to them recovering from injuries. It's also possible that some players chose to go home and see their families for more time rather than go on the trip

Participation has always been optional, and I don't think the entire team has made any one trip.  Family may interfere, and I know some players chose foreign study the last couple of years.  I'll bet it's the same story this year - a lot take the trip, some choose family, some choose study abroad.  I'm sure some were held out for injury, and still others decided to lounge around and imitate Animal House.

As long as the opportunity is open to the entire team, I won't fault those that chose do something else.  (However, personally, I'll wonder WTF!??!)

I dont think the "common fan" realizes Michigan teams have been going on these trips forever.Softball went to Japan,Basketball went to Italy (Fab 5),Australia ,tennis team went to Brazil, etc etc its not like its a Harbaugh idea.

Michigan has private donors pay for these trips, maybe Michigan donors actually care more about the University than just winning games,I have no idea why other schools (swimming in cash) dont do these things, maybe their donors dont love their Universities as much.

As far as i know college football teams cant practice during this time of year (i could be wrong) so why not take trips, bond as a team, see things most will never get to see?

Another reason why the University of Michigan is the greatest University on the planet !
