Small sample size.  Night game thing is only a thing because it usually brings a good team with a good coach and maybe a key injury or maybe a bad call (targeting a punter doing a somersault?)  PSU is not as good as Notre Dame and maybe not as good as Iowa a few years back.

Night game is not a thing to the rational.  Hey, we lose to QBs wearing number 7 when starting on the road at 12:00 in November.

It is a thing though man.  @Utah, @(shitty) Minnesota, @ Iowa, @ Penn State, fucking home against MSU, @ Notre Dame.

Harbaugh has all but said he does not like night games.  Thus far he has coached poorly in all them.

Harbaugh hasn't lost to Minnesota. And, in all fairness, I don't think we can attribute all of those losses to coaching. The Iowa game was won if the receiver had not let the ball bounce off of his chest and into the hands of the Iowa DB. First down - game over! Utah was the first game of his tenure with a qb who had been on campus for a month. The PSU game? They just ran into a hot team who won the B1G that year! As far as MSU at home? Fluke play in one game, and the Isaac and McKeon fumbles changed the momentum before the deluge of rain came. However, ND last year was all coaching! Harbs and Pep blew that one by not opening the offense up.

C'mon, that Minnesota team was playing for Coach Kill who had just retired because of a health condition. They were coming off of a bye and highly motivated by emotion. Why does the narrative have to be "we got lucky"? How about we fought off a competitor who had extra motivation?

As far as Iowa, regardless of the perceived coaching, if the 2nd half kickoff isn't fumbled, if Chesson doesn't bobble that pass right to Iowa, the game is won. And no, night games haven't been a problem. Each OSU loss was in the daytime! Change 2 of those, and we're not even having this conversation.

You are asking me if I believe in a one time occurrence (Minnesota 2015 game) or a multi-year, multi-player, multi-system, multi-opponent, yet continuous, damn near never ending streak?

I don't know what it is about sports that makes seemingly rational people believe in curses, bad omens, and superstitions.

People last year thought Haskins didn’t have the goods! Fields was more highly regarded than Haskins coming out. For what he doesn’t have in the passing game he can make up for it with his legs. They still have players at the skill positions too! Until we show up and match their intensity on game day, we will always have a tough time with them. Never slight them...hell its not like we haven’t seen them beat us with 2nd and 3rd string QB’s before.

Last year, no one thought Haskins "didn't have the goods", we were hoping his inexperience meant he wouldn't be the greatest passer in OSU/B1G history plus fans were hoping the Defense in combination with Shea, considering his experience (actually playing in competition), would be enough to mitigate the talent they had.

In short, we learned that, especially for a QB, time spent in the program building chemistry with his offense is more important than made up star rankings.

UofM has the time and chemistry this year and all OSU has is the made up star rankings :)

Which would be great - the best season since Hoke won the Sugar 7 years ago.

The only other 2 loss season this century is Carr's 2006 team.

Problem is, with this team I don't see a Manningham, Breaston, Jake Long, Mike Hart, Woodley, Brandon Graham, Alan Branch.

That was a loaded team.

Maybe the current players will rise up to that level we hope.

I don't think our receivers have had the opportunity to look like a Manningham or Breaston yet, hopefully that changes with the new system this year.  I certainly think they're capable of reaching that level.

No Jake Long, but our interior OL is as stacked as ever, and scheme should cover our lack of a Hartesque RB.

As far as the defense goes, you are right we have nobody near that level.  However, I still believe in Don Brown, and he has shown that he can do big things on defense with far less talent than our D has now.  We were supposed to take a massive step back on D in 2017, and that defense was still stout.

I'm a young Michigan fan, first game I went to as a kid was in '03 and I've been hooked ever since.  All I've seen is disappointing seasons and continuous losses to Ohio State, and even I'm confident that this is our year to break through.  We've had way too many quality teams since 2004 to be B1G championship-less for this long.  The ball HAS to bounce the other way eventually and I think this is the year it happens for us.

Too many people are scared off by the OSU score last year. And, there’s no way they will lose to Ped State

I think that Pep Hamilton was always slow to react to change on the fly, and fell back on to predictable play calling, when things outside the lines that he was expecting from a team were happening. I think he was that way because he is still a novice at coaching, and was moved up in the ranks prematurely. Michigan just did not have a sense of urgency, to go to war with Ohio St, when Ohio St was playing with more energy. He's gone now. Those bad two years are over. Period.

One thing that I liked with the 2016 Game is that Michigan came out of the gates with urgency, and was playing with more energy than Ohio St. The ball was moving! Turnovers really hurt in that game. Michigan probably should have won it.

Yea 10-2 seems very possible. I think we beat OSU but lose to MSU and PSU.. I think we have the best chance to win the division and conference but we wont because we've seen this movie way too many times. What can go wrong will go wrong when it comes to michigan football. BPONE baby!

huntmich

I disagree. Despite the osu game last year, the team as a whole was a much better team than we have seen in the last 13 years, except for 2016. 2016 and 2018 were elite and very good teams, respectively, even though neither achieved their ultimate goal. This team has the potential to be better than both. I can't wait until the results on the field dispell this Michigan masochist pessimism.

It's always seemed to me Angelique is negative, looking for some fault, perceived or real, to ask questions about. And it seems she feels her questions can't be overlooked, as she has talks over the top of others who are trying to ask questions, with her rabbit trail of questions.

I have to agree with her. I won't predict Michigan beating OSU until they actually, you know, do it. Given the last 20 years, and especially the last 4 years, why would I predict anything but a loss to OSU? Of course I want Michigan to win. Badly. But I've been burned too many times. Last year took the cake. I'm behind Harbaugh, and the team, but I'll shut up about guaranteeing or predicting wins against elite teams until I actually see it. EDIT: I don't know who . . . Wisconsin, MSU, PSU, ND, random team, but I think it is reasonable Michigan will lose one other game.

huntmich

August 25th, 2019 at 8:02 PM ^

Fuck that. I'm going to keep predicting Michigan to beat osu. I truly think we have a better team than them this year (which was the case in 2016, at least) AND we get them at home, AND their legendary coach is gone, AND they put Mattison, a 70 year old positions coach, into the defensive coordinator role.

This fan base can be such a fucking chore sometimes. If you can't have optimism now I don't know why you watch.

StephenRKass

August 25th, 2019 at 10:55 PM ^

Look, I have optimism. I hope for the best, I really do. But none of us have seen a Gattis run offense. Maybe I'll feel differently if Michigan begins 6 - 0. Maybe I'll feel even stronger if Michigan actually clobbers both PSU and ND. But the last two years I've had a friendly wager with a brother-in-law who is an OSU fan (and truly a nice guy, not a jerk at all.) We bet a buck on the game . . . and the loser wearing the tie of your opponent on a day of the winner's choosing. I just don't want to make any more wagers like that. When I see Michigan's offense shred OSU's defense, and when I see a Michigan defense that can really stop OSU, I'll feel differently. I'm ot there yet.

WichitanWolverine

August 25th, 2019 at 8:18 PM ^

Totally agree. I've been saying for a couple years to myself I won't believe they will beat OSU until after they do.

But then last year Michigan banged out 10 straight wins, beating some pretty solid teams in the process, and OSU barely beat some shit teams... Giving me confidence that we were finally going to get it done. Nope.

As long as we beat MSU and OSU I will consider this season a success even if we have 2 other random losses (PSU, ND, UW).  Sure, we’ll look back on it and think we should be in the playoffs.

JFW

August 25th, 2019 at 10:10 PM ^

Yeah. people say that. But if we beat OSU and MSU and have a loss or two that keeps us out of the college football playoffs you'll be having the same people talk about how we choke yada yada yada.

The only way the UM fan base will be truly happy is if we beat OSU and MSU and win at least one playoff game and maybe the national title. Everything else will have at least some fraction of the fanbase complaining.

A 10-2 season would be “a failure” – really?  In the words of Gob Bluth, “Come on!”

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SP_9zH9Q44o

Name the Michigan head football coach who has won as many as ten games in four of his first five seasons? (HINT: As of now, the answer is the same answer as the one to Jim Harbaugh’s question of “Who has it better than us?”) From 2000 through 2018, Michigan won at least ten games in only seven seasons, and both Lloyd Carr and Jim Harbaugh have three of those seasons.

It’s not like this team isn’t facing some significant challenges. Until we learn otherwise, Michigan is starting the season with:

  • Two relatively inexperienced offensive linemen, and if the revised lineup involves shifting Ben Bredeson to one of the tackle spots, then that’ll be moving Michigan’s one player with some pre-season All-American mention to an unfamiliar position;
  • A projected, three-man, running-back rotation that has a total of 82 carries for 468 yards and one touchdown among them;
  • A defense missing five of its top eight tacklers from a year ago, plus having a completely revamped defensive line being coached by a new assistant, a new linebackers coach and some questions about the cornerback position opposite Lavert Hill;
  • Its leading kick returner from 2018 sidelined while recovering from an intestinal ailment;
  • As many as eight true freshmen who could see significant playing time (Zach Charbonnet, Mike Sainristil, Cornelius Johnson, Erick All, Chris Hinton, Mazi Smith, Anthony Solomon and Daxton Hill); and
  • A schedule that includes games against six teams ranked in the AP pre-season top 20 (Ohio State, Notre Dame, Penn State, Michigan State, Wisconsin and Iowa).

Although a 10-2 regular-season record might seem like "a failure" when measured against the wishes, hopes and desires of most MGoBloggers and probably every single player and coach on the Michigan football team, considering the challenges and the always unpredictable injuries that can plague even the best teams in the nation, there might be several ways in which a 10-2 season could be considered a success, especially if the only losses are to Wisconsin and Notre Dame and Michigan wins both the Big Ten East Division title and the Big Ten championship game.

I really don't understand this type of absolutism. Last year, osu was taken to OT by Maryland, and almost lost. If they would have, we would have won the big ten east and probably the big ten. In such a case, the season would have been a success, regardless of the results of the osu game.

Yes, I hate osu. No, it isn't the only metric to judge a season by.

In order to compete for national championships you cannot play second fiddle to anyone in your conference. Alabama does not squeak into the playoffs and neither does Clemson. Our entrance video says we bow down to no program. So sure if we lose to osu and win the big ten thats cute and all but by no means does that make us an elite team more like a lucky team. Beat osu and we dont need maryland or any other big ten team to help us get to indy.
