JJ threw him a dime down the field versus Iowa...and he caught it. 2nd quarter.

So since we're using data points of 1.

There is a counterpoint to your assumption that a WR sucks because he dropped one ball.

-------

Look, I'm not saying the kid is good. I'm saying he's a 3 star but half of you hyped him up to be Braylon and he was NEVER Braylon. So thats on YOU. Don't tear him down now.

I'm also reminding you all that RONNIE BELL WAS INJURED ALL OF LAST YEAR. So of course there were opportunities to step up and opportunities to get targets/catches.

How are so many people ignoring this?

It would be like saying El-Hadi sucks after next year if Keegan and Zinter come back and they are healthy all year.

"Well he showed flashes in 22..." 🤡

Well a fucking 5th year senior returned and started over him. He had to wait another year.

Like I keep saying, there is so little data to pass judgement on Anthony. He didn't pass anyone up...he didn't get passed by anyone. A player returned from injury and was WR1 when he got hurt and when returned.

Quit making this out to be something it isn't. If in the summer we hear Clemons and/or Walker passed Anthony and then he transfers...well, then he couldn't cut it. But they were still both behind him.

But being buried behind 3 upperclassmen in an offense that doesn't go 4 WR deep is all this is. Plus our use of TEs. Plus our tendencies to run the ball.

And it's the exact same thing on the OL. We don't have a bunch of young guys playing. They're buried behind upperclassmen, it doesn't mean they're not good, won't be good, or they're not a "loss."

DJ Turner didn't play a lick his first couple of years, despite the hype. He had upperclassmen ahead of him (plus an injury, but he was never passing the guys ahead of him). How did that turn out? Some guys are Will Johnson...other guys have to wait. It's sports.

If Keon Saab can't pass Moore and Paige next year...it'll be the same thing at S. Doesn't mean he's a bust. Beating out older guys is hard to do. Sometimes you just have to wait...or move on.

I wish him the best, I think he could have been good getting targets down the middle a lot like Bell, but he seemed to always be running deeper routes.

I really hope Johnson and Wilson come back and hopefully Darius Clemons takes a role because I think he can be special.

Like many have said, disappointing, but not surprising.

For whatever reason, he couldn't find traction...something just didn't click.

Can't blame the kid - hope he finds somewhere that can unlock his potential (preferably outside the B1G East)

He has done little to zilch aside 1 game.  People need to get off the "we have so much depth in the WR room"  Tell me about performance.  It's a lot of bodies.  2-3 performers that's it.

Maybe as we’ve seen he doesn’t have very good hands? It’s entirely possible he doesn’t get those targets because he’s not that good. He had one good game. He was a low 3* recruit. This idea he was Marquise Walker or Braylon like we wanted him is based on almost nothing. I hope he does awesome wherever he goes.

Yeah, he obviously has talent but that MSU game seriously altered expectations for him and it's really looking like an outlier.  I said this a couple of places but Ricky White's one game against UM had a similar once-in-a-lifetime feel given how the rest of his P5 career went (he did have a solid year at UNLV).  I could see Anthony going down a step in competition and doing well.

This one just feels really weird.   He may go down as one of the biggest “what-ifs” of the Harbaugh era.    He looked to have elite ball skills last year.  The way he high pointed the ball was Braylon Edwards-esque.   He had speed to burn.

Who is he?  The player who looked like a freak of nature against MSU as a freshman or the player who looked lost and uncomfortable as a Sophomore?

The UM/MSU has created a couple of great WR preferences recently - Anthony for UM, Ricky White for MSU - that seemingly were one-off showings.

He's probably a bit better than he was this year but that 2021 game might have just been a guy playing out of his mind in his hometown.  And the stuff he how showed in that game - the high pointing, the speed, etc. never really showed up elsewhere.  I do wish him the best.

This one stings unless Cornelius Johnson or Blake Corum return.

If CJ comes back, you have Wilson and Clemons...we're good.

If Corum returns, Edwards plays more WR than he has in the past (along with splitting RB carries with Corum)...we're good.

Please don't go to MSU or Iowa, Drel!

Assuming CJ goes...

1. Wilson, 2. English, 3. Moore in the speedy outside route runner role?

1. Clemons, 2. Walker, 3. Dixon in the blocky jumpy possession role?

1a. Henning, 1b. Morris, 3. Morgan in the shifty quicky slot role?

well when we only use 2-3 receivers per game and run the ball on 3rd and 16 why would he stay. Granted he had a few opportunities to shine and just had some bad luck but he should have had at least 3 passes attempted to him per game. 90% of the time he was in the game we ran the ball for reasons i cant fathom.

My perception is we spread the ball around more to different targets than at any point I can remember, while also passing 5 attempts less per game. This creates a dearth of targets per receiver. But if you compare the distribution to say Henson 2000, it was probably more skewed then to a few (highly productive) guys.

Must mean that Harbaugh is coming back. If a new head coach was coming in, potentially with a more pass happy offense, he might stick around. Instead, he’s making a move to get more playing time and targets, and it’s hard to blame him if he has NFL aspirations. I think he could be a Kenneth Walker level steal if he goes to right program.

I’m sick of the portal already. Not that it’s been that unkind to us. We’ve picked up some immediate impact players and only lost guys with little production, but we are on a path to a place where portal transfers will be as vital to a team’s success as high school recruiting is and it’s going to be a gigantic free agent market.
My question is regarding undergrad transfers. Let’s say a guy entering his third year of college is in the portal and many of his credits won’t transfer at Michigan. For argument’s sake I’ll say he’s only planning to stay one year and enter the draft early, so he doesn’t care if half of his credits won’t transfer. Can he still come to Michigan’s and qualify academically or would he be ineligible because of the lost credits and is no longer making satisfactory progress to a degree?

1. I think we've passed the "on the path to" part. Look at MSU last year and TCU this year.

2. Great question on the credits -s omething I always wondered too. If a guy is basically headed to the league but needs a year of fine tuning - like the ASU OLman we got this year... should he CARE if his credits aren't picked up? I realize nothing is guaranteed, but there are a lot of guys who are confident in themselves and are really looking to train for the NFL. Why, then, do they care about credits transferring?

Also, if its a freshman, and he transfers in (e.g. LB from Nebraska) and we give him no credits for work done at corn-school, does he care? He has plenty of time to make it up - where he either gets to the league, or stays here 4 years and finishes his degree?

In the non-TLDR version, are being accepted into Michigan and allowing transfer credits the same thing?

bummer, I liked Andrel a lot, just didn't seem to develop at Michigan which could simply be between the ears.

I have to think he ends up at CMU where he'll join a couple high school teammates.  Best of luck AA, that 90 yarder against State was special and it was great watching all the hometown sparties who hated on you for choosing Michigan.

FYI, Andrel played hoops and a high school student section turned out wearing all MSU gear just for Anthony.  Thing is the high schools own school colors were blue and yellow and it is one of the greatest self owns I've seen at the high school level.

I have had a (reliable in the past) source hinting this all season to me. There was some disconnect with the receiver coaching change this year and there were a lot of times where the message of the new coach (Bellamy) wasn’t getting home with AA this year. Struggles to get down the routes and blocking was a major concern at practice all year. While this is something that might surprise a lot initially, it is not a surprising development inside the hall.

As a whole the WR coaching has not been something that was a confidence booster this year. So much so that it has been floated that Bellamy may go back to defense. Despite his experience as a WR, it seems he is better suited for the secondary when it comes to coaching, and his recruiting strengths can't be understated either. The fact is though that there was no development at WR this year. Bell was Bell and he has had 5 years in the program so there wasn't left much for him. Wilson seemed to be trending well but just kinda stayed where he was until Saturday. Anthony and Henning saw absolutely no growth, and Johnson was inconsistent after trending upward for the better part of the last two seasons.

In the end though, I think a sophomore Clemons, Walker, and Morris will all be better than Sophomore (and Junior for that matter) Anthony.

Couple of things:

  • Agree with your last statement that 2nd year Clemons, Walker and Morris will be better than Junior AA (and as a group could be very good)
  • I don't know that the problems fully stem from WR coaching.  Under JH, the best season any QB has had was in 2019 with Shea (3000 Yards and 23 TD's)
    •  for some context, Stenson Bennett over the last two years has averaged 3300 Yards and 26 TD's per season

So, Stenson Bennett, who no one would claim is a top flight QB, puts up bigger numbers for Georgia and most would argue Georgia and Michigan run a similar style offense.

My point is that Michigan needs to throw the ball more, especially earlier in the season, to really get an accurate view of what the WR room looks like.  We run the ball, on average, about 59-60% of the time.  I think that needs to closer to 50-53%.   While it may look like a small percentage, that comes to about 50-55 more passes per season (based on the number of plays we have run lately).

Those extra pass attempts matter.

Now, I don't think we need to go all Ohio State but we should be averaging 30 attempts a game.

I also believe that play calling and design also need to be discussed.  We don't have a lot of slants, crossing routes and picks built into passing offense.  Too often, IMO, what I see is basically best on best and go make a play.  We need to also build in concepts that get a WR open on a regular basis.

I also think that we tend to really lack cohesive play calling.  It doesn't appear that we really set things up well or add a new wrinkle to an existing set.

Lastly, to also open up the passing game, the QB has got to keep on the Arc Read atleast 4-6 times a game.  Man, If JJ would have kept 2 or 3 times in the TCU game, that changes the TCU alignment on defense.  Keeping that extra defender closer, allows for better passing lanes down the field.
