Aidan Chiles officially transferring to MSU
No surprise here, but it is now official. I really don't understand how he is ranked as the #1 transfer QB by some, but he is a big get regardless. Played well in garbage time as a freshman. Was #152 overall, #12 QB in the 2023 247 composite. #58 overall in 247's non-composite rankings.
December 14th, 2023 at 2:27 PM ^
hope he enjoys getting hit 30 times a game
December 14th, 2023 at 3:19 PM ^
1st half.
Plus is the coach knows what he is getting.
But you are hanging your hat on very little experience that will need some development behind a sieve of an OL.
December 14th, 2023 at 3:25 PM ^
You're both right....he'll likely be in the locker room with the trainers by halftime
December 14th, 2023 at 2:28 PM ^
I am to understand that he played in the third series of games, and accounted for 7 touchdowns. So, not really garbage time achievements.
December 14th, 2023 at 2:32 PM ^
Looking at his game log, approximately 2/3 of his pass attempts and four of his seven touchdowns were against UC Davis and Stanford, both massive blowouts for Oregon State.
December 14th, 2023 at 2:35 PM ^
I stand corrected. That was all garbage time.
December 14th, 2023 at 2:36 PM ^
Ohhh 'cussin, don't be ridiculous
December 14th, 2023 at 2:45 PM ^
Love your username Coach! lol
December 14th, 2023 at 2:37 PM ^
Either way, he definitely appears to have a lot of talent, so it's a good pickup for Sparty, though at present they have no one to block for him.
December 14th, 2023 at 3:09 PM ^
Neon Deion built an entire OL in one day. Staee has lots of time. They may actually look like a functional football team by the time spring practice rolls around.
December 14th, 2023 at 3:24 PM ^
Obviously, MSU is going to take a bunch of guys in the portal, but building an entire OL from random castoffs is not going to result in a functional line. Just ask Shedeur Sanders and his broken back.
December 14th, 2023 at 3:30 PM ^
I like Coach Prime. Moreso than mediocre Jon Smith. But that line has yet to be tested under fire yet.
December 14th, 2023 at 3:30 PM ^
The oline he said in a press conference he was gonna replace?
December 14th, 2023 at 4:10 PM ^
I'd bet a lot of money that Deion's transfer portal O-line is only marginally better than whatever they were rolling out this year. We should know as well as anyone, it's really hard to build a good and deep O-line and the transfer portal is great for plugging holes, not shoring up disaster rosters
December 14th, 2023 at 5:31 PM ^
I suspect sparty will be lucky to win 3 games next year….prime’s 4-8 will be something to aspire to.
December 14th, 2023 at 6:48 PM ^
They have a really easy schedule. If most of their portal players stay I could see them winning 6.
December 14th, 2023 at 2:35 PM ^
Call it what you want I guess. Only games where he had more than 3 pass attempts were UC Davis and Stanford
December 14th, 2023 at 5:54 PM ^
That is correct.
December 14th, 2023 at 2:30 PM ^
Didn't play in garbage time, rotated in on 3rd series either both halves or each game. Good get for them. Hope he understands the OL is about to get hit behind.
December 14th, 2023 at 2:40 PM ^
I never watched them play. Maybe he was playing and not doing much. Only games with more than 3 pass attempts were UC Davis and Stanford. 1/2 for 5 yards against Washington and no stats against Oregon
December 14th, 2023 at 2:44 PM ^
Did most of those drives end in punts? Because he basically threw 3 passes/game
SJSU: 2/3 for 37 yards
UC-Davis: 9/13 for 74 yards (and a TD)
Utah: 1/1 for 23 yards
Cal: 2/2 for 21 yards (and a TD)
UCLA: 2/2 for 16 yards (and a TD)
Arizona: 2/3 for 58 yards
Colorado: 0/1
Stanford: 5/8 for 75 yards (and a TD)
Washington: 1/2 for 5 yards
December 14th, 2023 at 5:02 PM ^
where did this narrative that his stats weren't mostly based on garbage time come from? check out the game log - most of his stats were against garbage teams.
December 15th, 2023 at 10:07 AM ^
Didn't play in garbage time
Four of his seven touchdowns were scored in the second half of blowouts over UC Davis and Stanford.
December 14th, 2023 at 2:31 PM ^
I mean not super-surprising given that the new MSU HC was this dude's old HC at OSU (not that OSU or even THAT OSU).
We'll see how he does playing in a conference that actually gives a shit about defense.
December 14th, 2023 at 3:12 PM ^
MSU’s schedule next year and the current SP+ ranking of their opponents’ defenses
Florida Atlantic: 80th
Maryland: 20th
Louisiana: 103rd
Boston College: 78th
Ohio State: 3rd
Oregon: 19th
BYE: always claims a victim
Iowa: 2nd
Michigan: 1st
Indiana: 74th
BYE: Spartan football players on a SECOND BYE. Oof
Illinois: 49th
Purdue: 73rd
Rutgers: 22nd
3 top-20 defenses in 4 games, including all 3 of the top 3. That’s a LOT of opportunity to get your young QB destroyed. Unless this guy is Sean Clifford 2.0, Sparty might be in trouble.
December 14th, 2023 at 5:27 PM ^
Sparty is in trouble even if he is Sean Clifford 2.0
December 14th, 2023 at 5:47 PM ^
Great point, mGrow.
I'm glad that MSU hired a coach who seems "normal" and will likely tone down the heat level of the rivalry.
That being said, the new coach is a .500 coach just like the one who just left. He had NTOSU up to an 8-4/9-3 type level in a conference that, up until this year, has been pretty mediocre.
And a quick look at his recruiting at NTOSU reveals that it's been ok...but not at a level to get to the top five of the new Big Ten conference.
Plus, all of his jobs have been in the west, which is not exactly fertile recruiting grounds for MSU.
It's impossible to predict the future, but I'd be surprised to see them get past the 9-3/8-4 level with the new coach.
December 14th, 2023 at 6:48 PM ^
Yeah but he did it this year when it was stellar too.
December 15th, 2023 at 2:29 AM ^
So he might be Matt Campbell?
December 14th, 2023 at 6:52 PM ^
No offense but this is a pretty poor assessment. Dantonio was only a .500 coach at cincy too. Oregon state was a total mess when Smith arrived. They won ONE game the prior season. There are very few good recruits in the oregon/washington area. He is going to be good, its ok to admit that. But it doesn’t mean they are going to approach um/osu or even psu/usc/oregon levels of winning.
December 14th, 2023 at 2:31 PM ^
Feel sorry for the kid. Nothing is fixing that mess anytime soon.
December 14th, 2023 at 2:32 PM ^
When I saw the name I thought it was a hockey player.
Msu is worlds behind us and this guy or anyone else they get will not scare me. Unless we go back to being a soft apologetic program they are irrelevant. Kind of like an older brother can always beat up a younger brother even as they age unless the older brother becomes a yes man.
December 14th, 2023 at 6:30 PM ^
Good point shea
December 14th, 2023 at 2:33 PM ^
Poor fella...
December 14th, 2023 at 2:35 PM ^
Surprising he's #1 given Cam Ward exists. He basically only played extended snaps against UC-Davis.
Actually, looking at the rankings, I don't agree with a lot of these. Dillon Gabriel at 10th? Dante Moore is ahead of some guys too that he should not be. Do they take class into consideration? Like a Sr is lesser than a sophomore because of eligibility?
December 14th, 2023 at 2:45 PM ^
FWIW - 247 puts a lot of weight on the number of available years for each transfer. This is why E. Hausmann was the #4 player overall in the 2023 transfer rankings when he came to M.
December 14th, 2023 at 2:53 PM ^
Ah, so that makes A LOT more sense.
December 14th, 2023 at 5:18 PM ^
Yeah it’s a weird way to rank players but I can at least see the logic in it. I just can’t put much stock in a ranking system that values eligibility that much though
December 14th, 2023 at 2:35 PM ^
Good for them. I hope Sparty turns their program around from a bunch of douchebags/roided up assholes, to solid young men. It's not impossible and they can definitely carve out a solid program there.
Having said that, they are now going to be nothing more than a thorn in the side and an occasional L every 3-5 years. Their days of seriously competing with regularity in the BIG are long gone.
December 14th, 2023 at 4:13 PM ^
No matter what they do, they will always be our little brother.
December 14th, 2023 at 2:40 PM ^
Right now any get for MSU is a good get.
December 14th, 2023 at 2:40 PM ^
The B1G needs a healthy midsection and MSU (if not filled with deranged violent assholes) could fill in space nicely, competing to hand top tier teams unfortunate losses here and there. Bottom dweller MSU while hilarious isn’t good for the conference. Good get, Sparty.
December 14th, 2023 at 3:15 PM ^
Fuck the Big Ten. I don't give a rats ass if it has any healthy portions other than Michigan. The rest can all go to hell, Sparty in particular.
December 14th, 2023 at 3:42 PM ^
There are plenty of mediocre programs in the Big 10 who can fill that role. I hope MSU goes 0-12 for the rest of my life.
December 14th, 2023 at 4:15 PM ^
I hope they lose every day, every game, every sport.
December 14th, 2023 at 3:53 PM ^
Yeah, I don't get this mentality at all. Sorry if I'm wrong, but I feel like this can only be people who attended Michigan from out of state who feel this way, or elderly Michiganders who can vaguely remember when Sparties weren't such maniacs. Regardless how much a coach with some class might un-trashy the mentality of the program a bit, the fans are trash to stay. The Big Ten, to the extent I even care about it anymore, can have a healthy middle from the likes of Minnesota, Nebraska, Illinois, UCLA, etc. State on the other hand, can bottom-feed for the rest of the Big Ten's existence. Fuck them, always and forever.
As for this QB, sounds like a solid pick-up, notwithstanding their acting like they landed the #1 actual high school recruit and not the "No shit, Sherlock" fortune of a decent QB following his career .500 coach to his next stop. Not gonna make much difference next year or likely the year after, though.
December 14th, 2023 at 6:54 PM ^
You sound as bad as any msu fans. Sad post.
December 14th, 2023 at 9:01 PM ^
Nah, I'm not cheering for anyone to get injured or thrown in jail without due process. I completed undergrad there, I live in Lansing, pretty sure my feelings have plenty of valid observational founding. Also, judging by your join date and posting history, I have my doubts as to your true fandom, so not really sure I'm the sad one. Sorry I touched a nerve, Spart.
December 14th, 2023 at 5:39 PM ^
Screw sparty. We have Iowa and Maryland for mid tier.
