Aidan Chiles officially transferring to MSU

Submitted by Benthom11 on December 14th, 2023 at 2:26 PM

No surprise here, but it is now official.  I really don't understand how he is ranked as the #1 transfer QB by some, but he is a big get regardless. Played well in garbage time as a freshman. Was #152 overall, #12 QB in the 2023 247 composite. #58 overall in 247's non-composite rankings.

Didn't play in garbage time, rotated in on 3rd series either both halves or each game.  Good get for them.  Hope he understands the OL is about to get hit behind.

Did most of those drives end in punts? Because he basically threw 3 passes/game

SJSU: 2/3 for 37 yards

UC-Davis: 9/13 for 74 yards (and a TD)

Utah: 1/1 for 23 yards

Cal: 2/2 for 21 yards (and a TD)

UCLA: 2/2 for 16 yards (and a TD)

Arizona: 2/3 for 58 yards

Colorado: 0/1

Stanford: 5/8 for 75 yards (and a TD)

Washington: 1/2 for 5 yards

I mean not super-surprising given that the new MSU HC was this dude's old HC at OSU (not that OSU or even THAT OSU).

We'll see how he does playing in a conference that actually gives a shit about defense.

MSU’s schedule next year and the current SP+ ranking of their opponents’ defenses

Florida Atlantic: 80th

Maryland: 20th

Louisiana: 103rd

Boston College: 78th

Ohio State: 3rd

Oregon: 19th

BYE: always claims a victim

Iowa: 2nd

Michigan: 1st

Indiana: 74th

BYE: Spartan football players on a SECOND BYE. Oof

Illinois: 49th

Purdue: 73rd

Rutgers: 22nd

3 top-20 defenses in 4 games, including all 3 of the top 3. That’s a LOT of opportunity to get your young QB destroyed. Unless this guy is Sean Clifford 2.0, Sparty might be in trouble.

Great point, mGrow.

I'm glad that MSU hired a coach who seems "normal" and will likely tone down the heat level of the rivalry.

That being said, the new coach is a .500 coach just like the one who just left.  He had NTOSU up to an 8-4/9-3 type level in a conference that, up until this year, has been pretty mediocre.

And a quick look at his recruiting at NTOSU reveals that it's been ok...but not at a level to get to the top five of the new Big Ten conference.

Plus, all of his jobs have been in the west, which is not exactly fertile recruiting grounds for MSU.

It's impossible to predict the future, but I'd be surprised to see them get past the 9-3/8-4 level with the new coach.

No offense but this is a pretty poor assessment. Dantonio was only a .500 coach at cincy too. Oregon state was a total mess when Smith arrived. They won ONE game the prior season. There are very few good recruits in the oregon/washington area. He is going to be good, its ok to admit that. But it doesn’t mean they are going to approach um/osu or even psu/usc/oregon levels of winning.

When I saw the name I thought it was a hockey player.

Msu is worlds behind us and this guy or anyone else they get will not scare me. Unless we go back to being a soft apologetic program they are irrelevant. Kind of like an older brother can always beat up a younger brother even as they age unless the older brother becomes a yes man.

Surprising he's #1 given Cam Ward exists. He basically only played extended snaps against UC-Davis.

Actually, looking at the rankings, I don't agree with a lot of these. Dillon Gabriel at 10th? Dante Moore is ahead of some guys too that he should not be. Do they take class into consideration? Like a Sr is lesser than a sophomore because of eligibility?

Good for them. I hope Sparty turns their program around from a bunch of douchebags/roided up assholes, to solid young men. It's not impossible and they can definitely carve out a solid program there.

Having said that, they are now going to be nothing more than a thorn in the side and an occasional L every 3-5 years. Their days of seriously competing with regularity in the BIG are long gone.

The B1G needs a healthy midsection and MSU (if not filled with deranged violent assholes) could fill in space nicely, competing to hand top tier teams unfortunate losses here and there. Bottom dweller MSU while hilarious isn’t good for the conference. Good get, Sparty.

Yeah, I don't get this mentality at all. Sorry if I'm wrong, but I feel like this can only be people who attended Michigan from out of state who feel this way, or elderly Michiganders who can vaguely remember when Sparties weren't such maniacs. Regardless how much a coach with some class might un-trashy the mentality of the program a bit, the fans are trash to stay. The Big Ten, to the extent I even care about it anymore, can have a healthy middle from the likes of Minnesota, Nebraska, Illinois, UCLA, etc. State on the other hand, can bottom-feed for the rest of the Big Ten's existence. Fuck them, always and forever.

As for this QB, sounds like a solid pick-up, notwithstanding their acting like they landed the #1 actual high school recruit and not the "No shit, Sherlock" fortune of a decent QB following his career .500 coach to his next stop. Not gonna make much difference next year or likely the year after, though.

Nah, I'm not cheering for anyone to get injured or thrown in jail without due process. I completed undergrad there, I live in Lansing, pretty sure my feelings have plenty of valid observational founding. Also, judging by your join date and posting history, I have my doubts as to your true fandom, so not really sure I'm the sad one. Sorry I touched a nerve, Spart.
