2 Questions re: The Best Pizza You Ever Had...

Submitted by xtramelanin on May 9th, 2019 at 5:48 PM

Mates,

Following on the heels of the 'Marijuana and Work-Out' thread, it seems apropos to ask about your favorite pizza.  Back in the day deep dish was the 'new' pizza.  IIRC, there was an "Uno's" on S. University over by Washtenaw Ave that majored in deep dish.  Later on, stuffed-crust pizza is/was all the rage and now its come back around to thin crust in many places.   So today's questions are these:

1.  Where did/do you get the best pizza you ever ate?

2.  What is your favorite frozen/store-bought pizza?

Picture here to get you in the mood to 'dish' on your favorites....

1 - Pequod's in Chicago or Anthony's Gourmet in Ann Arbor come to mind.

2 - Jet's is our delivery franchise of choice.  We also have Cottage Inn and Hungry Howie's, which are solid, but a) not deep dished and b) outside of our delivery range.

Side rant - those of you who also live in Columbus will know what I'm talking about - but another jackstupid thing about this town is that most places will square cut round pizzas unless you *specifically* request pie cut; the way cities with functional brain cells do it.  To make worse, the fkn idiots in this town insist on making 'Columbus pizza' a thing - basically thin crust, toppings to the edge and square cut.  It's not a thing - it's edible cardboard, you slope-browed cretins, and the only nice thing I'll say about "Columbus pizza" is that it's not Little Sleazars.

I rarely eat frozen pizza, but when I do it's usually a Jack's bacon cheeseburger that I bought because it seemed like a good idea b/c Meijer had them on sale for less than $2.

Homemade is so much better than frozen.

Back in the 70s and 80s we’d get Randazzo’s in Hazel Park. Great Detroit style pan pizza.

Nowadays, a friend of mine swears by Grimaldi’s. He weighs about 3 bills so I trust his judgment on food.

Unfortunately, we live 3 blocks from a Papa John’s and my son loves pineapple pizza.

Costco pizza is awful.

Beat me to it, Green Lantern in Madison Heights, Royal Oak, and Rochester Hills is excellent.  So is Alibi in Troy or Renshaw's in Clawson.  Stauffer's French Bread.  Cottage Inn in Ann Arbor.

Only pizza I didn't like - South Quad  [Grilled cheese sandwiches caused lines  in the rest rooms.]

Won't disagree with anyone. What was name of place on north side of South  University in the 70's?  Free if you ask - double crust, double sauce.  Friend ordered pizza during finals week, guy asks, "Would you like that in 6 or 8 slices?"  Friend says, "6, I can't eat 8."  Guy says, "Funny, like I never heard that before."  Friend says, "Can make it one half pepperoni and one half mushrooms?"  The guy asks, "Which side did you want the mushrooms on?"  Friend says, "I was thinking every other slice."  The pizza arrives with alternating toppings; pepperoni on every other slice."  Man, I loved undergrad.

Best Pizza in Ann Arbor: Mani

Best Slice in Ann Arbor: NYPD

Best Pizza I've ever had: Joe's Pizza in NYC

Also, anyone saying that their favorite pizza is Cottage Inn, Pizza House, etc. please never speak to me again

This is incredibly difficult to answer because pizza is pizza and I love all kinds depending on the day.

I tend to lean towards thin crust with a bit of a crunch so there are two local restaurants I like.

Bunker Hill and Skiles.  Probably means nothing to everyone else but they are my favorite.

Side note:  I have been to Italy 4 times and I can say the pizza there is good but I think Americans have perfected pizza along with putting it in the “toxic, junk food” category.  Pizza there is totally different and not meant as a whole meal.

Side Note 2:  My Son’s Bday party is tomorrow and he chose Hungry Howies for his food.  Probably lowest on my list but I’m still going to eat the shit out of it because it’s..... pizza.

There is another place I really liked, but not necessarily for the pizza...

Gecko Pizza in Changan, China. Owned and run by an expat, pretty good pizza.

But the real real treat was their beer deal... if you paid upfront for 4 beers, you got to drink all you wanted at no additional charge. And the upfront charge for the initial 4 was something like $2. So, yeah, I went there a lot.

I haven’t been back for a while, not sure if they are still open but I’d you find yourself in Changan (near Shenzhen) I highly recommend it

My favorite pizza restaurant is Sally’s Pizza in Wooster Square, New Haven, CT.  It has hundred year old brick ovens.

I prefer to make my own pizza at home, including my own pizza dough and marinara sauce.  There is a good recipe for pizza dough at pizzatherapy.com.  Regardless of what kind of pizza, I use a large pizza stone in the oven; they also work well on gas grills.

Best pizza ever is from "Frank's Pizzeria," Westbury, Long Island. The were later bought out and renamed "Alfedo's," but it remained the best pizza.

We make homemade pizza every Friday as a family. We make our own dough using the Pioneer Woman recipe and then top with Muir Glen sauce and whatever else we desire that week.

Little Caesar's is the kids' favorite carryout. I don't hate it. I enjoy Donatos for a good greasy pie.

Giordano's Chicago just opened a shop here in Dayton and it's pretty stellar.

Am Seewoog Holzofen Pizzeria near Ramstein Air Base in Germany has some really good pizza as well.

I loathe frozen pizza.

Best pizza was the individual pizza from Dooley’s after consuming a pitcher of beer.  Cottage Inn for upscale splurging when you had the cash.

this place used to be near my work in the bronx, too bad that they closed it and moved to the suburbs (bronxville and port chester).

“Our pizzas are hand-stretched and grilled over an open flame to produce a crust that’s crisp yet tender. They are then topped with imported Italian cheese and tomatoes and a variety of fresh toppings.”

the dough is not baked in the oven but grilled, I don't know if there is anyone else that makes pizza this way but it is simply delicious, a totally different level

At a bar in Detroit called "The Post- East", at like midnight they would have a bunch of pizza delivered from somewhere and everybody would pass it around and take a slice. It always tasted amazing. I have no idea if it was actually good. But that is the best I have had

The single best Neapolitan slice you can get is at Mariello's near Union Square in NYC.

My favorite pizza all-time though is the buffalo chicken pizza made by the Distillery in Rochester NY. Used to go there all the time as a kid after Amerks games and hound the players for autographs.

Volcano Pizza in Battle Creek is pretty decent thin crust and has sort of a cult following. The guy who runs the joint has a bit of a soup nazi rep, is only open M-F for few hours each day, and totally shuts down for long stretches during the year. He’s a frick’n genius!

I haven't lived in Michigan in many years but I recall really liking Alibi in Rochester.  Wagon Wheel in Troy also had some good pizza.  I've always liked Jets and Cloverleaf.  And you can rarely go wrong with Giordano's in Chicago.

Galija’s in Split Croatia. Amazing pizza. Some of the best food I’ve ever had was in Split, not just pizza.

If you are in the Jackson or Mason areas, Klavons Pizza has a fantastic stuffed pizza. Up to six toppings and as a man, I of course go straight carnivore. Pepperoni, salami, sausage, bacon, ham, and steak. Plus, they make their own ranch dressing in house that is some of the best around (If you don't like ranch with your pizza, there is something wrong with you).
