I get that - my question is.. why are we lagging? And more importantly, why is there infighting on this blog about it? There seems to be a faction of UM fans who believe we are doing great and NIL deficiencies are not a thing.

So my question really is ... why are we lagging? if you feel we're not (to those that do), how do you explain the ?s raised both internally to our programs and externally?

MSU has 6 of 9 football commits in the mid to low 4* range from a wide geographic range.

They just took a highly ranked LB from IMG who was supposed to visit UofM on the same trip. He just shut it down and committed without a visit to Michigan after coming all this way?

They are on pace to beat Dantonio’s best class.  Which was a disaster btw.

It’s not all Mel.

I know we are just poking fun here and M will get it done. But, listen to one of the prospects that Sam had this morning. Good interview. The kid is focused on studies, development and getting to NFL. He specifically said he didn't care about NIL, but his dad on the other hand may have said something, but they both just laughed about it. Point is NIL may not be the end all be all..but we still need to get it right.

NIL not being a big factor is only true for some recruits: you’re a 5 star whose got their eyes on being a day 1 or 2 NFL pick, your family is financially secure, or you’re just a low 3 star who has limited offers from big time schools so beggars can’t be choosers. But if you’re a 4 star whose family isn’t financially well off, why wouldn’t you go to a place like OSU or LSU that will put your family in a great financial spot, you’ve still have as good if not better chance of getting drafted, and a much better shot at winning a CFB title? There’s been a lot of talk of Michigan not wanting to recruit a player whose got their hand out looking for NIL but I don’t really fault anyone looking for financial security for their family and don’t think there’s anything wrong with players doing that. We definitely need to get NIL right.

One interesting aspect of NIL is the tax man. We know he doesn't take a bite out of the cash bag but I suspect we may start hearing about unpleasant surprises in the next few years. Does someone paying large NIL have to report those payments to the feds via a 1099 or similar? That would make the old fashioned bag of cash and/or car more attractive.

This is great!  I love the idea of thinking outside the box to find hidden gems - also gives Michigan great exposure / helps build a fan base in the home countries of international athletes.

At this point Harbaugh and staff focus recruiting the same way teams like Kentucky, West Virginia, Virginia, Wisconsin, Iowa and other programs do who refuse to put a lot of energy going after the best talent.

I know this will not be a popular take from the Harbaugh lovers, and I know I am not even a slight flash in talent compared to all of these recruits, but why is Harbaugh recruiting so many players where Michigan is in a battle with teams like Illinois for?  Michigan is going after SOME players like Harbor that everyone wants, but most of their focus seems to be on players that would be impactful at a program like Pitt.

Can these recruits help Michigan beat MSU 2-3 times every 4 years?  Can they help beat OSU 1-2 times every 4 years?  Can they help Michigan make the playoffs once every few years?  Harbaugh's job is to put together a team each year with enough talent to beat the rivals, win B1G championships, and make the playoffs. Doing this 1 out of 7 years is not what the fanbase should accept.

I will take my verbal punishment now for expecting more from Harbaugh and this staff in recruiting after the excellent year they had last year.
