1/6/2020 Depth Chart Status

Submitted by reddogrjw on January 6th, 2020 at 7:43 PM

I plan to do this once a week or so and put the depth chart in the first post so I can edit it

Only people assured of leaving have been removed.

Some players listed at more than one spot, especially on the OL

Currently 87 scholarship players.

Designate the likely walk-ons with * since some get 1-year scholarships sometimes

Barnhart was the only true Frosh Ol that played this year although that was at tackle.  If he can play guard I would suspect he might be ahead of Rumler.

Filiaga seems like the wildcard for guard.   And damn losing Ruiz really sucks.

The team looks good on paper if we get good QB play.

I think Stueber sliding in to take one guard slot and the two tackles are the most likely (though some have suggested flipping the tackle sides) so 1 G and Center up for grabs perhaps they weren't in line to start after all

4th phase

FWIW other posters in the last few days have claimed they hear Filiaga is staying. Total speculation here but I think Stueber started practicing at guard in bowl practices because he sat all year, saw both guards were graduating and figured that was his best path to play soon. When that happened, the 2nd team guards in the bowl practices became Stueber and Spanellis, which pushed Filiaga to 3rd team at the end of his 3rd year. Then you have Honigford probably moving back to guard and like 3 freshman all getting practice hype and he probably got a little anxious. Out of the blue, Spanellis decides he wants a Master's degree from somewhere else and seniors are off preparing for the draft, and all of the sudden Filiaga is back to a 1st team guy and one of the oldest OL so hes one of the leaders in the weight room 2nd semester. And he decides to stay.

I would create 3 WR spots since that's our standard formation. 1RB, 3WR, 1TE.

I was actually thinking about this last night. We're fine at WR because I think everyone will now get more reps and will have more consistency.

Our problem next year is depth. If we stay healthy I think the main core gets A LOT more snaps compared to the main core this year.

At WR I have...

WR: Collins, Johnson

WR: Bell, Henning (I don't think he plays as much RB/SLOT as people think...to me he's next up after Bell), Wilson

SLOT: Sainristil, Jackson

...what I'm saying is, even without DPJ, we're fine with Collins, Bell and Sainristil getting the bulk of the snaps. Giles Jackson will be able to get touches at that SLOT spot. Other than that the drop off is HUGE from Collins to Johnson and Bell to Henning/Wilson.

Therefore I think you see your starters more often. Same with DL, LB, and DBs.

Our starters are not the problem...but we can't lose anyone and that's asking way too much. But less rotation could mean more cohesion? Wishful thinking?

Also...SAM for us is Uche's position or Noah Furbush.

You can combine MLB and WLB, but SLB is a completely different position and they don't overlap with players. For us a SLB has more in common with a WDE.

That said it's weird because we have the VIPER position as well.

Harrell was recruited for the SAM spot, some folks have reported that Barrett is moving there as well. Which I don't get because he's already next year's starter at VIPER.

We just need to drop the SAM spot next year. Like I said, more reps. Paye and Hutch need to be ready to go almost every down. Then you have Kemp and Hinton backed up by Dwumfour and Smith/Jeter (if we don't bring anyone in).

Vastardis, Tru, Jess Speight and Carl Myers could all get a redshirt and come back for a 5th year. It's just a matter of will they be.

Vastardis was the backup center this year. Could possibly start as a 5th year SR

Vastardis I think has a very good chance to start at center for us and should be back even if he doesn’t start will be in the 2 deep

the other players you mentioned I don’t think get a 5th year as the shops will be needed especially if we bring in a grad transfer this year and I’m guessing we do along the DL

I think Bell will be moved outside next year. Also, I predict a shake up to the corner room you have listed. My guess is Perry gets moved to safety. Michigan will probably lose someone if a Andre Seldon does win the nickel slot.

I could see us staying in the Tite defense we were in for most of the bowl game next year, in which case I would guess the starting line would remain Hutchinson-Hinton-Paye.

Barrett might be moving inside if Solomon is ready at Viper. Also I would expect Morant to move down to linebacker or viper from safety. Otherwise nice start on a tentative depth chart.

I may have missed it but, my brother suggested paywall chatter is Cato June as a safety hire. He then forwarded a Drew Henson tweet. Is June considered a quality coach? Haven’t heard anything about him in years.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but the guys currently in the portal are not assured of leaving right ?

bighouse1979

Here is my best guesses to edit

Tru will not return for a 5th

Turner will not be back

I wouldn’t be shocked to see Velazquez play Baseball full time

Barrett will probably be the Viper, he will not move inside

BVS will probably be switching to defense (SAM)

Filagia plans to return

I wouldn’t be shocked if Ben Mason leaves , he has no role on this team

Rumler is behind a few guys and will probably not play much next year

Not convinced that Nordin returns

Finally for all of you that are hoping for Joe Milton to be the savior we are in deep trouble if he takes a lot of snaps q

Mason isn't going anywhere.  He is in Ross and that degree is money.  Plus, he was highly effective in the first half vs Bama.  Dude was crushing Bama 5-star backers all day.  They were afraid to take him on !   Don't yet understand why we went away from him lead blocking for Charbonnet in the 2nd half as it was hugely effective in the 1st half.

Mason will get drafted as a FB and for special teams on an old school team like the Patriots.
