1/6/2020 Depth Chart Status
I plan to do this once a week or so and put the depth chart in the first post so I can edit it
Only people assured of leaving have been removed.
Some players listed at more than one spot, especially on the OL
Currently 87 scholarship players.
Designate the likely walk-ons with * since some get 1-year scholarships sometimes

edit 1 - Filiaga staying, moved to top of depth chart at LG
January 6th, 2020 at 7:50 PM ^
Only thing I would change is Rumler over Barnhart, but that's speculation at this point.
January 6th, 2020 at 8:16 PM ^
Barnhart was the only true Frosh Ol that played this year although that was at tackle. If he can play guard I would suspect he might be ahead of Rumler.
Filiaga seems like the wildcard for guard. And damn losing Ruiz really sucks.
The team looks good on paper if we get good QB play.
January 6th, 2020 at 9:18 PM ^
The German was moved to DT. Chuck was running with the ones at bowl practice at guard. Also Jack Stewart and Carpenter
are the most ready to start out of their 6 man class.
January 6th, 2020 at 7:52 PM ^
with the current roster, do we see these guys beating OSU any time soon?
January 6th, 2020 at 8:04 PM ^
And no michigan is not beating osu until they get a heisman QB, gotta hope for McCarthy in few years maybe
January 7th, 2020 at 3:38 PM ^
Yes.
January 7th, 2020 at 9:01 PM ^
No, despite what the hive believes we lost most of our OL, our QB, our Viper etc. We take a step back next year ?. The year after however, we have the chance to be good.
January 6th, 2020 at 7:54 PM ^
I think Hawkins is a Junior Next year
January 6th, 2020 at 7:59 PM ^
I don't think he red-shirted, but I could be wrong
January 6th, 2020 at 9:18 PM ^
Hawkins did not redshirt. He was a full time special team player in 2017, the third safety in 2018, and obviously the starter in 2019.
January 6th, 2020 at 8:01 PM ^
I don’t understand why filiaga would leave I would expect him to start at LG unless he’s being passed by young guys, and spannelis leaving too was a big surprise I woulda pegged him for starting center or guard
January 6th, 2020 at 8:29 PM ^
I think Stueber sliding in to take one guard slot and the two tackles are the most likely (though some have suggested flipping the tackle sides) so 1 G and Center up for grabs perhaps they weren't in line to start after all
January 7th, 2020 at 10:48 AM ^
FWIW other posters in the last few days have claimed they hear Filiaga is staying. Total speculation here but I think Stueber started practicing at guard in bowl practices because he sat all year, saw both guards were graduating and figured that was his best path to play soon. When that happened, the 2nd team guards in the bowl practices became Stueber and Spanellis, which pushed Filiaga to 3rd team at the end of his 3rd year. Then you have Honigford probably moving back to guard and like 3 freshman all getting practice hype and he probably got a little anxious. Out of the blue, Spanellis decides he wants a Master's degree from somewhere else and seniors are off preparing for the draft, and all of the sudden Filiaga is back to a 1st team guy and one of the oldest OL so hes one of the leaders in the weight room 2nd semester. And he decides to stay.
January 6th, 2020 at 9:59 PM ^
We might see more playing time transfers after spring practice. I hope we've seen the last of them before then from players with a real shot at contributing.
January 6th, 2020 at 8:20 PM ^
Doesn't feel like there is a SAM in the miod of an Uche on this roster.....
January 6th, 2020 at 9:16 PM ^
Barrett 235 and teammates talked about how good he was at that poistion
January 7th, 2020 at 11:01 AM ^
Different player though. Uche was 6'3 253, Barrett is 6'0 235. You're just not going to ask them to do the same things.
January 6th, 2020 at 9:20 PM ^
Ojabo would seem to have a similar mix of length and athleticism. But he was able to put on weight easier so probably is more a true DE.
January 6th, 2020 at 8:38 PM ^
I bet Ojabo will be in two deep after being the scout team DPOY—I have a hard time believing they singled him out with seeing him as a contributor in near future. He was signed as one of those athletic, raw guys like a Frank Clark.
January 6th, 2020 at 9:42 PM ^
In all his rawness-he played mostly inside in HS...and was pretty twitchy. If I remember correctly he ran the 100M in HS track quite impressively. This along with his DPOY play has me intrigued as to the possibilities he may be developing into.
January 6th, 2020 at 9:43 PM ^
I'd expect Bell to play a lot more on the outside next year.
January 6th, 2020 at 10:01 PM ^
Yes, Bell and Collins seem almost certain to be the two starters on the outside. There are plenty of weapons available for the slot without Bell.
January 6th, 2020 at 11:13 PM ^
I would create 3 WR spots since that's our standard formation. 1RB, 3WR, 1TE.
I was actually thinking about this last night. We're fine at WR because I think everyone will now get more reps and will have more consistency.
Our problem next year is depth. If we stay healthy I think the main core gets A LOT more snaps compared to the main core this year.
At WR I have...
WR: Collins, Johnson
WR: Bell, Henning (I don't think he plays as much RB/SLOT as people think...to me he's next up after Bell), Wilson
SLOT: Sainristil, Jackson
...what I'm saying is, even without DPJ, we're fine with Collins, Bell and Sainristil getting the bulk of the snaps. Giles Jackson will be able to get touches at that SLOT spot. Other than that the drop off is HUGE from Collins to Johnson and Bell to Henning/Wilson.
Therefore I think you see your starters more often. Same with DL, LB, and DBs.
Our starters are not the problem...but we can't lose anyone and that's asking way too much. But less rotation could mean more cohesion? Wishful thinking?
January 6th, 2020 at 11:19 PM ^
Also...SAM for us is Uche's position or Noah Furbush.
You can combine MLB and WLB, but SLB is a completely different position and they don't overlap with players. For us a SLB has more in common with a WDE.
That said it's weird because we have the VIPER position as well.
Harrell was recruited for the SAM spot, some folks have reported that Barrett is moving there as well. Which I don't get because he's already next year's starter at VIPER.
We just need to drop the SAM spot next year. Like I said, more reps. Paye and Hutch need to be ready to go almost every down. Then you have Kemp and Hinton backed up by Dwumfour and Smith/Jeter (if we don't bring anyone in).
January 6th, 2020 at 11:33 PM ^
Highly unlikely seldon and dgw redshirt
January 7th, 2020 at 8:29 AM ^
Seldon, at least. There's an open spot in the secondary that he seems the best suited for.
January 6th, 2020 at 7:49 PM ^
Vastardis, Tru, Jess Speight and Carl Myers could all get a redshirt and come back for a 5th year. It's just a matter of will they be.
Vastardis was the backup center this year. Could possibly start as a 5th year SR
January 6th, 2020 at 8:05 PM ^
Vastardis I think has a very good chance to start at center for us and should be back even if he doesn’t start will be in the 2 deep
the other players you mentioned I don’t think get a 5th year as the shops will be needed especially if we bring in a grad transfer this year and I’m guessing we do along the DL
January 6th, 2020 at 8:27 PM ^
if they all remain walk-ons I could see them all staying
January 6th, 2020 at 10:30 PM ^
Wilson has been on scholarship for two years.
January 6th, 2020 at 8:00 PM ^
I think Bell will be moved outside next year. Also, I predict a shake up to the corner room you have listed. My guess is Perry gets moved to safety. Michigan will probably lose someone if a Andre Seldon does win the nickel slot.
January 6th, 2020 at 8:38 PM ^
I could see us staying in the Tite defense we were in for most of the bowl game next year, in which case I would guess the starting line would remain Hutchinson-Hinton-Paye.
January 6th, 2020 at 9:47 PM ^
I could definitely see that. It also makes the DL recruiting suddenly make a lot more sense.
January 7th, 2020 at 6:58 AM ^
And Safety recruiting. This is what we have been recruiting to move towards.
January 6th, 2020 at 8:41 PM ^
Detroit Free Press did this today and they left off Mazi Smith (and probably a few others.)
January 6th, 2020 at 8:47 PM ^
Barrett might be moving inside if Solomon is ready at Viper. Also I would expect Morant to move down to linebacker or viper from safety. Otherwise nice start on a tentative depth chart.
January 6th, 2020 at 9:20 PM ^
I may have missed it but, my brother suggested paywall chatter is Cato June as a safety hire. He then forwarded a Drew Henson tweet. Is June considered a quality coach? Haven’t heard anything about him in years.
January 6th, 2020 at 10:03 PM ^
Hasn't he been a head coach in high school for a while? I mean, good player, played in the NFL some, some coaching experience, even if HS. I'd take that probably.
January 6th, 2020 at 10:04 PM ^
I believe he’s been coaching safeties at Howard university the last few years.
Wouldnt be a bad hire. Better than Marcus Ray.
January 6th, 2020 at 10:31 PM ^
He's been at Howard, but coaching RBs I heard.
January 7th, 2020 at 3:24 AM ^
Now coaching OLBs and recruiting co-ordinator. Kugler is the OL coach.
https://hubison.com/sports/football/roster#sidearm-roster-coaches
January 6th, 2020 at 9:35 PM ^
I’d put Solomon at # 1 Viper. Very quick kid.
January 6th, 2020 at 10:07 PM ^
Correct me if I’m wrong, but the guys currently in the portal are not assured of leaving right ?
January 7th, 2020 at 8:27 AM ^
That may be true technically but in practical application it makes no difference to Michigan.
January 6th, 2020 at 10:11 PM ^
Here is my best guesses to edit
Tru will not return for a 5th
Turner will not be back
I wouldn’t be shocked to see Velazquez play Baseball full time
Barrett will probably be the Viper, he will not move inside
BVS will probably be switching to defense (SAM)
Filagia plans to return
I wouldn’t be shocked if Ben Mason leaves , he has no role on this team
Rumler is behind a few guys and will probably not play much next year
Not convinced that Nordin returns
Finally for all of you that are hoping for Joe Milton to be the savior we are in deep trouble if he takes a lot of snaps q
January 6th, 2020 at 10:36 PM ^
I think there's a role for an H-back who might take a few snaps at FB. Probably not enough snaps to keep two players happy, but there would be a hole if BVS switched to defense and Mason left.
I'd hate to lose Mason for his special teams play.
January 7th, 2020 at 8:52 AM ^
Mason isn't going anywhere. He is in Ross and that degree is money. Plus, he was highly effective in the first half vs Bama. Dude was crushing Bama 5-star backers all day. They were afraid to take him on ! Don't yet understand why we went away from him lead blocking for Charbonnet in the 2nd half as it was hugely effective in the 1st half.
Mason will get drafted as a FB and for special teams on an old school team like the Patriots.
January 7th, 2020 at 9:44 AM ^
Because we just love to make strange adjustments when something is working well.
January 6th, 2020 at 11:31 PM ^
Van sumeren isn't fast enough to play lb. Why would Mason leave? A fullback has more of a role here than most other schools. Nordin was the clear starter down the stretch. Again, why leave? Rumler will be in the two deep.
