1,000th all-time win scenarios

Submitted by Chaco on May 2nd, 2023 at 7:24 PM

Our beloved football team currently has 989 all time wins.

"One game at a time" and "nothing is certain" caveats apply - but IF we manage to get through the season undefeated our 11th game of the season (and potentially 1,000th win) would be against Maryland. On the road.

If we are 10-1 going into the last regular season game we'd be positioned to play OSU on 11/25 for our 1,000th win.  At home.

Eventually, we will get 1,000 wins, but does it matter to you who it is against and where it is played?

It matters.  15-0, baby.  Plus, when we're playing OSU they will be talking about the 1000th win all game which will drive the Buckeye fans nuts.

The football gods set this up.  Win 1,000 will be in AA 11/25/23.

Expect big things this yr.  Going 5-0 on the road is a lot to ask.  Beat Ohio.  Win the B1G.  Go to the playoff at 12-1.  I'm good with that.

You know, the funny thing is I actually did root for Michigan to lose once - and it was vs Maryland!

In 2014 we went into Maryland needing a W to become bowl eligible. I feared that they wouldn't can Hoke if we made a bowl, so I did root for Hoke to lose. And he did!

That season was our only Ls to Maryland or rutger since they joined the conference, I believe?

EDIT: As a side note we are also only .001 (.1%) behind for all time winning percentage.  Going to be tough to get there with Ohio State and Bama ahead of us but could happen this year.

Double Edit: Did the Math quickly so feel free to double check it.  Michigan would need to go 15-0, Bama would need 2 losses, and Ohio State would need to go 10-3 or worse.

Michigan: 0.733668
Alabama: 0.733259 (11-2), 0.733457 (12-2)
Ohio State: 0.732963

This is a big reason why I hated the fact that the 2020 (Covid) season was played. UM had a shitty season that year while Bama and OSU both did extremely well.

The inequities in terms of player participation and practice time skewed the results of that season so badly that it absolutely should not count in official records, but alas, it does.

Also, it blows that the *uckeyes have the best winning percentage. By my math, there needs to be a three-game swing for UM to take that prize back. So how about ...

1. Beat the snot out of 'em 11/25

2. Beat them again in the playoffs

3. Beat them again 11/30/24 in the toilet bowl

Or, have OSU lose to other teams, too.

I was looking at osu schedule and its not as easy as it was last year.  With a new QB they open up at Indiana.  A few weeks later they're at Notre Dame in a possible revenge game.  At Wisconsin, PSU at home, at Purdue.... remember what happened to them there a few years ago?

They only have 6 home games.  I can see OSU dropping 2 games before they head to A2.

People OK with 1 loss are assuming OSU will beat Penn State.  If PSU managed to beat OSU and we lost to them on the road, we could find ourselves in second place in the East even with win 1000 against the Buckeyes.

That's not worth it.

And even if Ohio State beats Penn State, if our loss is to Penn State then it's highly unlikely we win the three-way tiebreaker. Ohio State's west division opponents are Purdue, Minnesota, and Wisconsin, and ours are Purdue, Minnesota, and Nebraska. So the only way we can win a three-way tie is if Nebraska has a better conference record than Wisconsin (lol)

There are so many arbitrary stats, championships, wins, losses, records, etc in college football. 1,000 wins isn't really a huge deal to me. Maybe I'm on my own with that take though.

Michigan is a team of destiny, fulfilling ancient Roman prophecies that were so strong that they wrote them into their numbering system.

The marketing team should put up a Roman numeral countdown at Michigan Stadium.

I want it to happen as soon as possible, because 1) I want to win every game anyway and 2) I want as large a lead over Bama/OSU/ND as possible.

Win 1000 will happen in College Park vs the Fighting Locksleys.

If we play the season 10x I think we go 11-0 in 80% of those scenarios.
