'Coachable' Fixes

Submitted by rs207200 on

It's my first thread, so feel free to neg away so that I can't post a new topic in the future.

Watching the game, I noticed a few areas that seemed like issues that could readily be fixed if noticed by the coaching staff.  What are your thoughts on these?  Any other ones I missed?

(Additionally, I don't consider having Speight not overthrow a receiver or not throw high coachable.  It's obvious he knew not to throw high/out of bounds/etc.  He just didn't execute.)

  1. Punt Protection from the Long Snapper: Having the long snapper required to snap and then drop back in protection is crazy.  There has to be someone(s) behind him to help pickup the blitzer coming up the middle.  This one was obviously costly as the punt was blocked and UF got the ball on Michigan's side of the field. This has to be fixed by next game.  (actually, it probably doesn't because Michigan might not even need to punt)
  2. DPJ needs to keep that ball tucked into his body on returns: Noticed this on a few of his returns that he kept the ball away from his body, especially when he tried to juke/cut.  Florida didn't get a clean shot, but if this continues, it's going to cause some fumbles.   The good news is that Harbaugh has already recognized this issue and addressed it with the Media.  http://www.freep.com/story/sports/college/university-michigan/wolverines/2017/09/05/michigan-wolverines-football-donovan-peoples-jones/635803001/?hootPostID=75a1a14fd3c2848fcbed2e744412631d  Per Harbaugh: "Got to get that ball a little bit tighter, a little better ball security."
  3. Wilton Speight keeps his mouth guard in his helmet on some running plays: Haven't had a chance to rewatch every play (and sometimes you can't tell based on the TV cameras) but there were multiple times that Wilton had his mouthguard in his helmet and every time it was a Michigan run.  This has to get fixed unless this is the ultimate gamesmanship and Harbaugh wanted him to do this and they'll call a PA pass against PSU/tOSU/Wisky with the mouth guard in the helmet.

NOTE: I'm going to edit #3.  There is a chance I was mistaken and unless I see video/photo evidence it's not fair to note this one.  Additionally, he could have just forgotten on a single play.

One thing I saw, and this is product of a very aggressive defense, but everyone wants to get a shot on the ball carrier. Couple of times where guys were jumping on a player who was basically down. Bush did well to ease up a bit on the first play of the game but hopefully we don't get a late hit penalty at a key junction of the game.

The mouthguard in the helmet is a personal foul equipement penalty.  I doubt Harbuagh is coaching this because if we were to hit a big play against OSU I'd expect to be flagged for it because we can't have nice things.

Good point, if he did then everyone might stop playing as soon as Speight unbuttoned his chin strap, and might keep playing until he unbuttoned it. Which, on second thought, could be used to advantage to get the defense to stop playing before the play is officially over.

Doesn't the long snapper have a 1 second grace period where he can't be hit?  I recall it should have been a penalty in the MSU game in 2015 and if he gets hit right away it should have been a penalty in this game.  The guy is technically a defenseless player so all the safety rules should apply.

I think the overthrows are absolutely something you can coach.Whether it's mental or mechanical, that is EXACTLY what you expect Harbaugh & Co to work on.

Otherwise, thanks for your first post. And +1 for the effort!

Ulizio get off the ball better. I rewatched the game a couple times, and there's a noticeable delay between when the ball is snapped and Ulizio fires out. It really affected him on backside scoops and cutoff blocks, and resulted in the backside end chasing the play for a no gain/gain of 1 a few times. He was bad this game, and needs to improve.

O-line looked really good outside Ulizio (not sure if coachable or just need to wait on development).

Speight needs to make better decisions (coachable), not miss easy throws (not sure if coachable).

If Speight can play at a B+ level and Ulizio can be an average O-lineman, we can challenge for a national title - But Bama, like usual, looks very complete.  Every other team, given our amazing defense, I think we are on par with.

Along with the mouthguard comment, Chris Evans sometimes tips off pass plays by almost standing straight up in the backfield. He's never really fully bent whether it's run or pass, but on pass plays specifically he's way too vertical presnap. Like he's catching his breath/getting higher to pick up blitzes better. Just a minor observation. Sometimes these things are totally random and we look too much into them.

It was kind of surprising to hear Brian say on the podcast that he thought DPJ was keeping the ball close on returns, looked awful loosey-goosey to me.

I think it was the Harbaugh podcast, but JH said he needed to to let DPJ know that the ball needs to be a little higher and tighter.   Said it would be addressed this week :-).  The one thing I have utmost confidence with this staff is cleaning up details.  I have since watched the game a couple times over and found very few mental errors on either side of ball. Execution errors?Yes, a few, but flat out blowing an assignment, very few.  That is a testament to the coaches and players.  This team could be special if they stay mentally tough and WS gets back to last years mid season form.

I think the overall performance in all 3 phases was damn impressive, considering it was the first game of the year & the relative youth of this year's team. Other than the obvious (Speight), no major issues that can't be coached-up.
