A requiem for Matt Shepard's tenure as UM hoops radio announcer

Submitted by maceo_blastin' on September 30th, 2019 at 2:00 PM

I was saddened to hear this week that Matt Shepard will be replaced as the UM play-by-by announcer with last year's temporary fill-in, Brian Boesch, for the upcoming season. After Shepard took the job as the Detroit Tiger's TV announcer last year, his availability was understandably diminished.

To me, Shepard was synonymous with the 'Beilein era'. It was apparent upon listening that Shepard was a genuine fan of the school and had endless respect for John Beilein as a coach and human being. This bedrock of positive vibes was hugely valuable for when college basketball randomly, inexplicably doesn't go your way, and you would like to blame anything in your local vicinity. Shepard was a rock. There was always the 2nd half, or the in-bounds after the next commercial break. And, if he knew Beilein and staff, their guys would be ready with an answer. When they didn't, it was time to applaud the opposing squad and look to the rest of the schedule. In an age of hot takes, #narratives, and Dan Dakich calling out 20 year-old amateurs, I found TV productions insufferable compared to the wholesome respite that was the team of "Shep" and "T-Mills".

I am sure some of you know Shepard mainly from this year's Tigers TV broadcast. Let me state the nature of baseball doesn't play to Shepard's strengths as an announcer. His is a style more attuned to fast paced sports like basketball or hockey. I struggled to listen to him as the Tigers guy because it often felt like he didn't know when to speed up or slow down. He was like a Ferrari in a 4th of July parade.

And, this brings us to the core of my Matt Shepard fandom. His play-by-play was simply phenomenal. Basketball is a hard sport to convey over the radio. You could never describe everything happening on the court that is influencing the outcome. It is impossible. So, an announcer plays the herculean role of withstanding this rushing torrent of 'ball', in the hopes he can convey enough for the listener to get an idea of what the hell is going on. 'Peak Shepard', with his lightning-quick, yet crisp diction, would enter a seeming 'flow-state' where you were in the midst of the action as a listener. Thrilling. Rhapsodic. His intensity was made all the more profound in the stunning silence made by the arc of a three pointer...."RING IT UP!" he would roar like a silver-headed lion.

Maybe it's fitting Shepard left along with Beilein. Maybe it was Beilein's style of methodical, rhythmic offense punctuated with exultant three pointers that lent itself to this perfect marriage. For me, I'll always have the memories. I'll share one: I watched Beilein's second national championship game at a bar. A big screen hanging over the liquor bottles. The announcing a murmured din above the crowd half-paying attention. Knowing the outcome, and annoyed with my friends' lack of despair, I went to my car. I turned on the radio. By now, they were in post-game and it was Matt and Terry talking about how great of a season it was. It cheered me up. It was an amazing season. And, it felt like we had gone through it together. And, I was glad I was on their side.

Hopefully, the Howard era will be filled with many great wins and even some nets cut down. At this point, we can't know. But we can be thankful for all the greatness we were lucky to witness. To John Beilein and Matt Shepard: Thank you! and...

GO BLUE!

Shepard was good, and deserves his due. Thanks for sharing.

Don't sleep on Brian. He was likely to come in if Beilein had stayed as well.

Brian's play-by-play paints the clearest picture of any announcer for basketball I've heard in awhile. And while it doesn't count for basketball, his baseball announcing (if you listened last year to IMG) was on point. And Brian's a solid person as well.

Glad we're in good hands after a change.

Shep did a nice job on M hoops and will be missed.

He does run a little hot on Tigers broadcasts at times but I really like how he gets Gibson and Morris talking about the game.  They are both quieter than Shep but they both know baseball inside and out.  I learn something new from them every game.  And yes, I know that other people don't like them as a crew.  YMMV.

In honor of Shep, "the OP wears a crown!"

This couldn't have been better stated. Unfortunately, being on the west coast, I usually have to listen to the games (or at least the first half) at work, and Shep always carried me through. My first thought when he got called up to the Tigers was "but, could he still do hoops???".

Thanks for this tribute. It was well deserved and has got me wishing basketball could get here sooner.

The picture of how good Shepard was at the job can be painted best by comparing him to MSU pbp guy Gus Ganakis (sp?). Never says the score, gets unduly excited over little things like an inconsequential made FT and pushes being a homer way past the point where it can be respected. Shep did a great job in the role, hope Brian can fill his shoes.

HE GOT IIIIIIIIT!

Will Tieman? Can't stand that guy. But I do have a fond memory of him after the game at MSU in 2017 where Moe broke Nick Ward's ankles, shoulders, and face. He was so dejected after the game, it was more enjoyable to listen to him suffer than to hear the celebration from the UM broadcast.

Spring training starts mid-February and they start broadcasting at the beginning of March. I'm sure there is a lot of beginning of season prep work that broadcasters have to do prior to that - winter caravan, promos, etc. So while they don't overlap for much more than a month, it's still probably not feasible to do both effectively.

Shep's talents serve him best in calling basketball and football.  His delivery is made for announcing those sports.  He does fine with baseball; however I am going to miss him on the radio calling the basketball games.

I wish UM would have him be the PBP for football.  I think he would be phenomenal in that role.  I cannot stomach Brandstatter doing PBP on the radio.  I know Jim B is trying to get better, but he is just down right hard to listen to and is not very good in that role.

My wife doesn't understand why I curse constantly when listening to Michigan games on the radio. It makes me insane that he constantly gets the results of the play wrong. I'm on edge as it is and the continuous changing of the calls trigger me. He is a great color guy but horrible at PBP. Why can't they acknowledge it and fix it?

It's practically a universal opinion that Brandy sucks at PBP. Absolutely no reason why they can't have him and Dierdorf both as color guys next to a true professional broadcaster with experience at PBP. It's not like they don't have the money.

The question is, whose job is it to make this change? Does this fall to Warde, or is it whoever runs communications (Ablauf?). Clearly whoever it is does not want to bruise Brandy's ego because it is just an obvious disservice to the fans who can only listen on the radio.

I always enjoyed Shep on the old talk radio stations when I lived in the Detroit area and thought he did a great job on Michigan basketball. I will definitely miss his enthusiasm and I don't mind that he's a homer. He's nowhere near George Blaha level of blatant homerism. I haven't watched the Tigers at all this year since they are a joke.

I too am a huge fan of Shep's and will miss him on the broadcast (I've listening since he was part of the Jamie and Gregg show on WDFN).  My wife and I got to know him a little bit as he would host the team banquet and during the Amaker years attendance wasn't as high as it is now.  When he saw us the Clemson game (Michigan's first March madness appearance in a decade) he came up to our seats to greet us.  His call of the Burke 3 pointer against Kansas is one of favorites of all time.

Anyway, I enjoyed tribute and agree it is well-deserved.

Shepard was fantastic. I do agree it is kinda fitting for him to be leaving at the same time as Beilein...Glad to see him with the Tigers - i am sure that is a dream gig for an announcer.

New coach, new announcer... Look forward to seeing, and hearing, how the next 5 -10 years shape up
