WTKA Roundtable 12/21/2023: The Third Party Hates You Comment Count

Seth December 21st, 2023 at 10:31 AM

Note: No Brian today; we got John U. Bacon to fill in.

Things Discussed:

  • Recruiting: Sam: look at the portal too. Seth: Barham is a GREAT pickup.
  • Mark my words: in 4 years Michigan's 27 players are going to wind up providing more value to Michigan than Miami's 27 players are going to provide to Miami.
  • But I would like to see us get better at the up-front bag game for cornerbacks and wide receivers and quarterbacks who have a lot of value on the open market because the skills you see in high school are more likely to translate.
  • You aren't winning a 5-star who takes the bag to go to A&M. You should be winning 5-stars against Ohio State and Georgia and Alabama who know they're going to win and get developed AND get paid. Up-front payments are a line we won't cross, and I wish that wasn't the case, even if it does lead to stress-free signing days.
  • Burgergate: Congrats to Ohio State for getting the #1 player in the country without using NIL as an inducement, because if you buy a cheeseburger and try to cover it up the NCAA is on the case. Releasing the NOA on signing day should erase any doubt whether this investigation exists for any reason other than a vendetta.
  • Harbaugh NFL Round Whatever This Is: Yes be afraid of the Chargers, be very afraid if by some chance Las Vegas doesn't stick with their guy, don't be so afraid of the Bears.
  • Contract: Craig says there's no point unless there's an assumption of reasonableness.
  • Seth: It's not Michigan or Harbaugh we're worried about being reasonable, it's the Big Ten and NCAA, who have demonstrated conclusively that they are going to use any means at their disposal to hurt Michigan as long as Harbaugh is around. Is that hate ta Michigan problem or a Harbaugh problem? That's the question they need to resolve, because there's no way to keep Harbaugh unless Michigan has his back.
  • Opinion: They'll probably hate any other coach who's as successful at Michigan as Harbaugh. Also this probably has more to do with how much Warde and some of the regents are tired of dealing with it than what's right for Michigan.

That takes leadership. Weak UM leadership has caused:

1) Warde not being fired

2) UM not giving Harbaugh all the reasons to stay bc Warde is still here

3) Having ridiculous transfer admissions rules

4) Not believing in NIL which will directly impact the talent level and success level of future teams

Am I missing anything else?

I like the whole “transformational over transactional” philosophy as much as anyone. In theory.

But doesn’t that conflict with the “players are employees” philosophy? If players deserve to be paid (they do) and be treated like employees (they do, I think), then at some point you have to treat it like a job market.

Signing bonuses and large salaries are the norm when you’re recruiting/poaching in the corporate world. You identify someone that you think will be a good fit and a good producer, and you pay for that talent.

Now, nobody wants to work with an asshole, so “I don’t care how good he is, dude’s a jerk” is pretty common. You have to target the right people.

But my opinion is that you cannot automatically disqualify someone solely because they want to get paid a lot, and want part of that payment to be up-front. That, by itself, should not be taken as a moral or cultural indicator.

"Players are employees" would work better as a practical reality (i.e. there is an enforceable, written contract in place) than as a philosophy.  Right now we're in this odd opaque space where players get paid, but the pay isn't remotely equal (either in amount or how tied pay is to on-field performance).  And there's nothing other than a handshake providing guarantees on either side.  The player can take the money and still transfer; conversely the coach can sign the player and bounce to a new job, or promised NIL may never materialize, etc.

The problem is that the current reality is a lot closer to a sugar daddy relationship than an actual employer relationship.  Given how far out of the tube this NIL toothpaste has gotten, the only realistic way to fix this is to move toward real employment with real contracts, taxes, HR, benefits, all that good stuff.

Really agree with this.  It seems clear that players are made promises that don't materialize, often by people who don't have the money to back it up.  I think Michigan seems to be really good at this, and am surprised people don't bring up what appears to be the one upside of our kinda dismal NIL program: if promises are made, they are kept.  (Source.)

If you take all the prevailing philosophies at UM like no pay for play, yay revenue sharing, they don’t hold water. So they want players to get paid, just not before they come? Who cares? Or they want the players to benefit from revenue sharing but don’t want them being paid by boosters to commit to a school? So their whole argument hinges on that they care so much about who and when players get paid, that they sacrifice recruiting because of it? Nonsense.

The only pushback I've had for Seth and Brian is the insisting on allowing the bag up front. I'm hesitant to push back because I assume you guys know more than me. But, I mean, look at that cover art.

Do we really need to pay kids up front? How many losses do you think it has cost us? How many wins do you think we got just by having our culture of players? Would you rather err on the side of paying kids up front and sacrificing culture or keeping culture and losing a kid?

Here is what some people think this money up front means:

"Hey I know you are looking at Texas A and M and Miami but we have a huge wad of cash for you to come play in Ann Arbor"

What most of us are thinking:

"Hey our coaching staff think you are a great player, person, and have a great family. Coach A would like to add you to his position group as well as Coach Harbaugh. We wont compete with the huge payouts but here is what we are doing for our high end recruits as a fair compensation if you do decide to go with us."

Now the second one is because our coaches love the player he is 5 star on the field, classroom, and community and we will be damned if we dont take a shot on the perfect U of M kid.

Getting some money doesnt make the player some evil doer we need to knock that shit off. If our coaches want them then give them something reasonable.

Once the contract issue got "sign-gated" into a holding pattern, I didn't see anyway JH would sign until after the bowl/playoff. The ball's in his court (Ono trumps Warde, so people need to quit worrying about a guy will probably be gone in a year). He should keep on driving for better conditions (more NIL, better pay for coaches, etc.) while adding to his resume. A playoff win alone should give him even more leverage.  A natty more so.

As for Warde, Santa has only been on the job 1.5 years and didn't come from a school as heavily influenced by the combo of great academics and championship athletics. His biggest issue this year was getting the grad student/teachers contract settled, which dragged out for many months. My daughter is now in grad school there and I can tell you that strike cast a dark cloud over the mood on campus for months. Santa's also trumped Warde on the contract situation by going public in favor of JH more than once.

I suspect the failures of the men's hoops team will put Warde in a "fire Juwan before they fire me" mode soon enough. Having to advertise tickets on B1G network is crazy for a program with as much success over the previous 10+ year. I also believe Warde will get canned ("pursue outside opportunities") sometime next year. Give Santa time to get his feet underneath him without any strikes going on.

Even before NIL, I've definitely seen highly touted players who seemed to coast during their latter time in college. Even some that checked out midway.

Kyle McCord couldn't handle being told he wasn't guaranteed a starting job. Thought Rhule would promise it to him. Then feared competing with a 5-star recruit.

I can recall a lot of guys with tremendous hype who seemed to mail it in before they left. Shea was way better and focused at QB in 2018 than 2019 (when his golf game got better, his completion % got worse). Tate Forcier. Antoine Joubert in 80s hoops came in being hailed as "our" Magic Johnson. Derrick Green when he faced competition from Deveon Smith.

JH has been consistent (except in a few cases like luring Shea from Ole Miss) where he believed in meritocracy. Some coaches would have been too chicken to have Cade and JJ get in-season auditions like opening for 2022.

p.s. like the GS example. I worked for 35 years at Dow Chemical. It too paid less than companies in the oil industry but you had a better chance working a long career there. Plus happier place to work, less stress.

ShadowStorm33

Tate Forcier.

Tate definitely mailed it in (especially in the classroom), but his problems were compounded by the fact that because he was so heavily developed in HS, he came in almost a finished product. Whereas with most guys you expect them to come in near their floor and then develop to reach their ceiling, Tate was already near his ceiling when he came in. So when we all thought wow, he was already a decent QB as a freshman, just think how good he'll end up, it turns out he peaked as a decent QB, and merely decent was never going to keep Denard off the field long-term.

Derrick Green when he faced competition from Deveon Smith.

Did Derrick Green mail it in, or was he never that good to begin with? Remember, his rankings tumbled a bit, and it would seem that he's one of the poster children for the Brian/Seth mantra that recruits who fall in the rankings usually don't fall nearly enough.

Some coaches would have been too chicken to have Cade and JJ get in-season auditions like opening for 2022.

Honestly, I feel like that was a master-stroke by Harbaugh. He probably strongly suspected that JJ would win the job last year, but he gave enough deference to Cade to try and keep him engaged so he didn't transfer, as a quality backup QB is a luxury few teams have. The injury made it moot in the end, but I thought Harbaugh handled that as well as he could have.

Other than the connection with Stapleton, why would Warde NOT like Jim? As a former player, you would think Warde would love how Harbaugh is going about his business. Playing within the rules, being accountable, elevating the program, advocating for players, and winning titles is all Jim is doing. I don't get it.

I guess I can understand the side of Warde a smidge , to your points Seth , but in the end  he needs to do whatever he needs to do to get both sides to that “bear hug “ scenario.

Feels like their is a giant pissing contest going on between Warde and Jim…well Warde, you are not a future hall of fame coach , with multiple trips to NFC title game, a trip to and  almost wining a Super Bowl, brought Michigan football LITERALLY back ontop of CFB, and has won three in a row B1G ships.  Get rid of all the damn clauses as I see it…then again I’m just an arm chair qb over here.

Lots of buzz on YouTube about Jim being the Chargers' main target. All Warde has to do is what every fan wants him to do - let Jim know he wants him to stay and will support him. But Warde won't do that because he and his pal Stapleton want Jim to leave. He'll continue to throw monkey wrenches into the negotiations so Jim will leave in anger. Someone needs to tell Warde to sign Jim or start packing his belongings.

Everyone knows what time it is for the NCAA; they're becoming increasingly irrelevant.

What annoys me - I'm not sure it worries me now, though it did at first - is how the Big Ten and its leadership handled this season. They should have let the NCAA finish their investigation, and let the chips fall where they may. They did the opposite.

Whoever said it's a power grab is absolutely right.

Pettiti handled it so arrogantly that I still believe Michigan should explore leaving the Big Ten, if there is any reasonable way of doing so. Would the SEC take Michigan? I don't see why not. Maybe take M and Florida State?

But M could also explore becoming an independent at some point.

As for Warde, if he can't get along with Harbaugh, he should be let go.

That he wasn't at the football banquet is telling. But if Harbaugh goes, and Michigan falls back to mediocrity again, Warde is toast. That Warde can't seem to get along with Jim means that he has a monumental ego, and that's a problem.

Can Michigan get Gene Smith as AD? The guy did everything in his power to help his football team and got lucky with two consecutive head coach hires.

Football is a business. Michigan needs to get an AD who will do his best to keep them there and not play feelingsball.

My whole approach to all of this recruiting is that I’m in “wait and see mode”. As in wait and see how Jan 1st and potentially after goes. I think it’s obvious Bama and Georgia are the measuring stick for on field success, so if we beat Bama, and are at least competitive for a title, I feel as if we need to stay the course with our approach. If it’s obvious we got out talented then we need to change course to be championship caliber. The thought process was that 21 Georgia was generational on defense and that we just overlooked TCU too much focusing in Georgia so this supposed to be “the year” for Michigan to take that next step. Long post to say that it’s “wait and see” what happens Jan 1st.

That’s one approach.  The other might be to look around, note that there is absolutely NO ONE we could reasonably hire that would even come close to being as experienced and successful as Mr. Harbaugh, or a better fit for the unique circumstances at Michigan.  Given this, how about getting this contract negotiation finished with some reasonableness as was suggested by Mr. Ross on the podcast?

RE: Up front bag game

I'm getting reddit feeds from OSU, Miami, Georgia and a bunch of others for some reason. (targeting)   The fans openly talk about how they are paying players up front.  Jerimiah Smith basically admitted several times that OSU and the Florida schools had a bidding war for him.

Deion Smith the top Juco transfer showed up to his signing at Ole Miss in a Lambo.

Good thing there wasn't any cheese (burger kind or bagel kind) on that Lambo... Such utter BS.

WestQuad

December 22nd, 2023 at 9:36 AM ^

I like the idea that Michigan is getting players who want to develop and want to go to Michigan because they like/love Michigan (and hate OSU), but if OSU is offering you $500k to $2M and a Lambo upfront, you're going to take the money.

I like the idea that Jayden Davis is going to be the next Drew Brees, but how often do you get a Drew Brees, Michael Vick or Russel Wilson?

Michigan needs to figure out how to thread the upfront bag money without getting nuked by the B1G and NCAA.   Maybe Harbaugh should have given those kids their Cheeseburgers in McDonald's bags.

It’s a dumb unenforceable rule that the NCAA isn’t enforcing, but “pay for play”, which is what a “signing bonus” is, is still against the rules.

And Michigan is staring down the barrel of handsomely paying their head coach to NOT coach for half of two seasons for breaking NCAA rules.

We can bitch all we want about how unfair or capricious this is (it’s clearly both) but we need to at least acknowledge that reality.

You don’t think that might play into how willing Michigan is to push the rules right now?

kwallace23

December 23rd, 2023 at 3:20 PM ^

Michigan is labeled as cheaters and hunted down bc their leadership is weak. If anything, this mob mentality against them for exploring a gray area should motivate them to break rules and pay players. The only reason OSU ignited signgate is bc they know how weak UM leadership is and how much they place in front of winning.

kwallace23

December 23rd, 2023 at 3:18 PM ^

Why does Michigan think up front payments are so wrong? What is bad about them? Can someone at Michigan please answer that question? Everybody else seems to do it. In the pros, some teammates make a lot more than others, so you could say that it prepares them for that. Plus, Michigan supports revenue sharing for players to get paid! So it’s just WHERE and HOW players get paid that has UM so damn stirred up? Ridiculous to do that knowing how much worse it makes the talent on teams. UM loves to middle between wanting to be “admirable” with sports, but don’t mind collecting the revenue it brings in.

If Warde is too tired of Harbaugh’s antics every year, you can bet it’s because he’s friends with Jim Stapleton. So because Warde has supporters, Stapleton has power. Or maybe Stapleton is directly friends with those in power at Michigan?
