Portal In: LaDarius Henderson
Yesterday, the portal took. Bad portal. Today, the portal gives:
After much prayer and thought, I will be spending the last chapter of my college journey at The University of Michigan!

All hail portal.
Henderson started at left tackle as a true freshman in 2019 (at 17!), played sparingly during the COVID year, then moved to left guard in 2021. He was named a captain this year. He missed a big chunk of this year with a finger injury. PFF OL grading is weird, granted, but it's better than nothing. FWIW, they had him as a stronger pass blocker (averaged a 76 the past two years) than a run blocker (65). This does not mean he is a finesse player:

Henderson was high on NFL draft radars to the point where people are calling his decision to stay in college football a "shock."
[After THE JUMP: pro scouting and some what does it mean]
Pro Football Network's latest mock draft has him as a late first-rounder:
31) Buffalo Bills: LaDarius Henderson, G, Arizona State
Rodger Saffold gives the Bills a short-term boost at guard, but they could use a succession plan behind him. If you’re looking for a guard with tools to develop, you can’t do much better than Arizona State’s LaDarius Henderson. Henderson is around 6’5″, 310 pounds, with arms over 35″, and he explodes off the line. He can struggle with pad level at times, but his athleticism is eye-catching, and his length provides a conduit for elite power.
Henderson is one of the most exciting 2023 NFL Draft iOL prospects on tape, and he also has one of the most intriguing backgrounds in the class. Despite being a senior, Henderson will be just 21 years old through most of his rookie season, if he declares. …
There might not be an offensive guard prospect with a more exciting blend of physical tools than Henderson. At 6’5″, 310 pounds, Henderson has good height and above-average overall mass. But his chief defining measurable is his length. He has quantifiably elite length, with arms that measure safely over 35″ long.
Especially on the interior, Henderson’s length can be an overwhelming conduit for force at contact. But Henderson supplements that length with near-elite explosiveness and linear athleticism. He’s an extremely explosive athlete who surges off the line and into contact with dangerous momentum, and he also has the lateral explosiveness to get outside the 3-tech on running plays.
One of The Draft Network's analysts also likes him:
Arizona State LG LaDarius Henderson is someone you need to know! 6050 310-pounds with over 35-inch arms!

Former LT with good footwork and movement skills. In 13 games last season, he allowed only 9 pressures, 7 hurries, 1 QB hit, and a sack! That is impressive work! pic.twitter.com/w1CLypDnQe
Picking up an NFL-level senior OL who still has some ramp-up since he's just 20 is nice portalling. Go portal.
Upshot? Well, Michigan knows they're losing Ryan Hayes, who's already announced as a Senior Bowl participant, and Olu Oluwatimi. Trevor Keegan and Zak Zinter may have NFL options. If they get the guards back, Henderson is 6'5, 310" with long arms and NFL athleticism. He could certainly compete at tackle even if he's a guard at the next level. Plenty of NFL guards were excellent college tackles. If one of them leaves that looks like a plug-and-play situation.
Meanwhile Gio El-Hadi, Trente Jones, and Jeff Persi all started games this year and performed decently well, so unless the portal starts taking again Michigan should have another deep and good OL in 2023.

If I had to guess, this might mean that the staff expects Zinter to go.
I’d love to be wrong. Maybe they’re just not enamored with having two inexperienced tackles and/or want better pass blockers in that spot because JJ is going to be dropping back 30 times a game.
December 6th, 2022 at 2:19 PM ^
I think this might be a case of "if you can get an NFL first rounder, you do" more than a situation where we are looking to fill holes. That said, culture is big in that locker room so I doubt they are looking to unseat guys who have been starters on the team.

“That said, culture is big in that locker room so I doubt they are looking to unseat guys who have been starters on the team.”
I hear that, but Cade and RJ got unseated. If LDH is an upgrade on any of our non-center options, I don’t think the staff will hesitate to slot him in.
Also, dude has ideal tackle arms, if not quite ideal tackle height.
December 6th, 2022 at 2:37 PM ^
"...JJ is going to be dropping back 30 times a game."
LOL!! Have you met our coaching staff?
December 6th, 2022 at 2:10 PM ^
This type of acquisition is awesome. Makes me wonder what it is in reaction to- Zinter and/or Keegan?
December 6th, 2022 at 10:22 PM ^
Or solves pass protection problems at RT?
December 6th, 2022 at 2:13 PM ^
Wow, that's two NFL caliber offensive linemen from the portal in two years. And great leaders on top of it. For one thing, it takes off the pressure from having holes in a couple recruiting classes or more than typical attrition. Getting a plug and play lineman with a lot of skill means we don't have to recruit and develop the player. Obviously though, we only get him for a year. Still, a great pickup for Michigan!
December 6th, 2022 at 2:13 PM ^
Am I crazy... The guy in the picture and the guy in the Twitter clip don't look the same. The guy in the picture is 310 lbs?! He wears it well.
December 6th, 2022 at 2:44 PM ^
He destroyed that dude. Then Ladarius replied to that tweet, "Preparing for the next time!".
Even though he's almost NFL ready, perhaps he thought it would be fun to play one more year in college, in a mauling, "smashfest" offense, in a perennial Joe Moore-winning O-Line, getting world class coaching and development from Moore, Hart, Newsome, HERBERT!
Congratulations young man! Welcome!
Hail!
December 6th, 2022 at 7:13 PM ^
He seems to have been in a position similar to Oluwatimi. His draft evaluations said that because he had primarily been a pass protector in college (UV) they weren't sure if he was a good run blocker. He obviously went to UM to learn and prove he could.

Pretty good sales pitch, isn't it?

LaAwesomeus.
December 6th, 2022 at 2:27 PM ^
When I was a young Michigan fan back in the 1970s, Michigan was known for being where great offensive linemen came from. My sense is Michigan is regaining that reputation, which is a great thing. That's in addition to a growing sense of our defensive line capabilities. It's wonderful.
Is that Matt Weiss on the far right of that picture?
December 6th, 2022 at 2:39 PM ^
Yes. Weiss, Moore, and Newsome all there with Harbaugh.
December 6th, 2022 at 2:31 PM ^
Gotta take this with a massive grain of salt given the source but I found this tweet interesting. Could we be getting more aggressive with NIL? My guess is that no money was promised, but the sales pitch working is good nonetheless.
December 6th, 2022 at 2:33 PM ^
ASU site says graduate student, ESPN site says senior. Seems ok with our admissions.
December 6th, 2022 at 2:34 PM ^
Our Head Coach, Co-OCs, and TE Coach were all recruiting Henderson yesterday? Michigan REALLY wanted this kid.
December 6th, 2022 at 2:38 PM ^
Too many IOL starters is a great problem to have, as long as no one leaves early over it. Keegan has played tackle before, I think. Wonder if he could move there if everyone stays and they want to start this guy
December 6th, 2022 at 2:49 PM ^
Keegan played OT in a pinch this year, and looked like an OG playing OT. Really doubt everyone stays and if they do, I think it's more likely Henderson plays OT, not Keegan.
December 6th, 2022 at 4:00 PM ^
This guy was a possible first rounder this year. He will be starting. He didn’t come to ride the bench or because of our beautiful winters.
December 6th, 2022 at 4:16 PM ^
My thought is he wants to play LT and that is probably the least proven backup.
December 6th, 2022 at 2:44 PM ^
Welcome big fella … here’s hoping you road grade a hairless nut into the ground next November opening up a 99 yard TD for Donavon Edwards !!!
December 6th, 2022 at 2:53 PM ^
The prospect of starting a drive from our own one yard line is harrowing.
December 6th, 2022 at 3:01 PM ^
Henning forgot to field a punt
December 6th, 2022 at 3:07 PM ^
Then put Will Johnson back there! I wanted another defensive Heisman candidate anyway!
December 6th, 2022 at 2:48 PM ^
December 6th, 2022 at 2:51 PM ^
Agreed. I do hope we hit the portal for more of a bruising back. I don’t feel stokes’ playstyle is really a complement to Donovan’s. Would be nice to have a Haaskin’s esque bruiser to spell Don with Stokes mixed in too.
December 6th, 2022 at 3:03 PM ^
Mullings will be much better after bowl/spring/fall practices at RB … don’t discount him so fast
December 6th, 2022 at 4:17 PM ^
Agree with this. He would have been power back imo this year if NHG didn’t get hurt.
December 6th, 2022 at 5:04 PM ^
I remember in the last Spring Game he looked really good. I thought he had locked down the Bullyback role until NHG got hurt and we needed him as a LB
December 6th, 2022 at 5:04 PM ^
EDIT: My First Double Post!!! Damn Internet connection...
December 6th, 2022 at 2:50 PM ^
What an unexpectedly awesome get from the portal! Welcome to the family young man. You can pick up your Joe Moore award at the door.
December 6th, 2022 at 2:59 PM ^
Is it possible that if both Zinter and Keegan stay (please!) we see one of them bounce inside to center rather than seeing Henderson bounce outside to tackle? Nothing against Greg Crippen––he was a well-regarded recruit and I'm 110% confident this coaching staff will get the most out of him––we just haven't seen much of him in game action. A starting OL of Barnhart–Henderson–Keegan–Zinter–Jones would just maul. (Also, having El-Hadi, Persi, and Crippen as your backups is chef's kiss.)
December 6th, 2022 at 3:10 PM ^
If anyone moved to center it would be Zinter, not Keegan. They experimented with Zinter at center couple years ago.
December 6th, 2022 at 4:01 PM ^
Good point, I forgot about this.
December 6th, 2022 at 3:15 PM ^
That's an ideal scenario but it seems unlikely to happen.Zinter and/or Keegan are going to go NFL.
December 6th, 2022 at 7:50 PM ^
The staff was ready to start Crippen this year if we didn't get Olu. We also have Anderson brewing as well. We won't be moving Zinter to OC if we are fortunate enough to have him return.
December 6th, 2022 at 3:46 PM ^
Love this. Welcome, LaDarius!
December 6th, 2022 at 3:57 PM ^
Hey ASU, you take one of our BB guards, we take your best FB guard.
That's the Michigan way!
December 6th, 2022 at 3:58 PM ^
Awesome. Now grab Allen from Wisconsin.
December 6th, 2022 at 4:04 PM ^
Welcome!
December 6th, 2022 at 4:10 PM ^
I could get used to us robbing the NFL in the portal.
December 6th, 2022 at 4:34 PM ^
Is Henderson a possibility at C? If Zinter comes back, could ZZ finally land there? Or are we looking at Crippen/Anderson in 2023 regardless?
December 6th, 2022 at 7:51 PM ^
I think he is much more likely to be coming in as a LT than OC.
December 6th, 2022 at 4:39 PM ^
A really nice pickup and speaks, I think, to the strength of the team on the field and what sounds like a solid NIL operation on the back end.
December 6th, 2022 at 5:18 PM ^
I smashed that like button
December 6th, 2022 at 5:27 PM ^
Great news! But my fear is Keegan and Zinter.
Mr. Henderson sounds AWESOME, but I'd rather have our two starting guards over any other two in the country.
If he's coming in to compete a LT...well then HECK YEAH!

@Brian...are you assuming Barnhart stays at RT?
He's got the most position flexibility of anyone on the entire roster.
December 6th, 2022 at 6:43 PM ^
Nice pick up.
Any 6'4"-6'5" wide outs with Calvin Johnson-like potential in that portal?
