One Frame At A Time: Maryland
This is here, but not in the top ten, because while I loved this shot of the blocking on the opening kickoff—particularly Michael Barrett's open-field pancake—wirecam on returns is undefeated.
[Hit THE JUMP for the wirecam shot and much more.]
The Full Album
The Top Ten
10. Full-Contact Five Hundred
When going for a cut block, you really want to hit... something. Anything.
9. That Moment When...
...you realize you chose to coach a program that's significantly closer to being Rutgers than Indiana, and despite this, you've also chosen to participate in beefs with coaches within your division.
8. Gil Up The Gut
Yeah, probably should've accounted for that guy in the blocking scheme.
7. Diet Bullrush
Maryland's right tackle outweighs Josh Uche by about 50 pounds. You wouldn't have guessed that given the way the above played out.
6. Wait For It
Remarkable patience on the part of Zach Charbonnet to wait for Ben Bredeson and Nick Eubanks to open a path to the end zone. Slick cut, too.
5. Hey It Worked Again
Wild how that keeps happening.
4. Seeking Contact
I don't think the safety expected a 200-pound former walk-on to hit the truck stick at the end of a long run. He was wrong, and Tru Wilson let him know about it.
3. Plotting Your Demise
[Jaws theme plays]
2. Flying V
I love this view of the fake punt. You can tell they get the first down because the sticks are in the background. Otherwise: CHAOS.
FRAMES OF THE GAME: WIRE TO WIRE
A little moment I appreciated here: it looks like the wirecam operator is going to zoom way out to show the stands when Giles Jackson hits the open field, then realizes very few people are in said stands and keeps the shot focused on the field.
VOTE OR BE DISENFRANCHISED
I'm tempted to do away with the voting in these posts because I've never really done anything with it and it's annoying to put together, plus people just use the comments for a similar purpose anyway, but I'll keep it going this week while taking your feedback.

I still can't believe the lack of effort by the kicker on the opening kick off. I have to believe if he pushes Giles at all, his momentum takes him out of bounds.
November 7th, 2019 at 9:40 AM ^
I wouldn't attribute something to lack of effort when it can much more easily be accounted for by "being a kicker" and "taking a terrible angle." He tries to get a shove in but has no angle to get any force on Jackson.
It always looks like the kicker is loafing on returns because they've got to jog to remain the last line of defense. Most of them are also bad at the non-kicking parts of football.
November 7th, 2019 at 9:37 PM ^
Except for that big lug who kicked for Ped St a few years ago. He would go headhunting after kicking off, so teams made a point of taking him out. He then started flopping to draw a penalty. Wonder what happened to him??
November 7th, 2019 at 9:50 AM ^
Yes that was a hilarious whiff- if it is anyone but the kicker, then there is a problem- he has an excuse, he's just the kicker. But, I bet he got lit up in the film room.
November 7th, 2019 at 10:42 AM ^
He looks like he thought it was touch football.
November 7th, 2019 at 12:10 PM ^
I laughed at that kicker when that happened, he couldn't have given less effort.
he would need to be kicked off the team for that lame effort
November 7th, 2019 at 9:48 AM ^
full contact 500 is an underrated title
it's perfect imagining jackson shouting "FIVE HUNDRED!" right as he gets hit
November 7th, 2019 at 2:59 PM ^
I especially like the synchonization on the part of the Maryland o-line. Not only do they miss all three blocks at virtually the same time, but they turn in unison in time to see the interception. Precision horrible execution.
November 7th, 2019 at 3:30 PM ^
Yep, those two have a future in synchronized swimming. Even after they turn around, they sort of mimic each other all the way through the end of the clip.
November 7th, 2019 at 9:49 AM ^
Tru Wilson's truck was completely glorious. Also I was more focused on the kick-out blocks to free Jackson in his TD run- but now that I've been watching and the open-field pancake block is also a thing of beauty. Hope these guys keep up the destruction all the way through the season, starting with Sparty in a week. I hope to be saying Sparty NOOO!! a lot next Saturday.

Is there any way for us to set HD as the default on gyfycat?
November 7th, 2019 at 9:53 AM ^
If a team is using a spread punt formation, it seems like a huge mistake to allow such a big gap between the longsnapper and the guards that a guy can squeeze through. The rule prohibiting defenses from hitting the longsnapper should be a big advantage to the punt team, because that guy can take up space just by being there. But that's negated if the space immediately on either side of him is open.
November 7th, 2019 at 11:45 AM ^
If a team has a nearly guaranteed first down fake-punt in their arsenal, it seems like a huge mistake to pull it out during a never close game against Maryland. The rule allowing teams not to use super cool plays against baby seals should be a big advantage to a team seeking to beat its primary rival for the first time in nearly a decade. But that is negated if the play has already been shown a month before that match-up.
November 7th, 2019 at 11:55 AM ^
I hear you but let's not kid ourselves. Plays like that work more often against cupcakes like Maryland, and are less likely to strike against the OSUs of the world.
Case and point (EDIT: Case IN point... the more you know) , the 2016 M vs OSU game where Ohio State tried a fake punt. It got gobbled up. And then we lost anyway.
That's nihilism for you.
November 7th, 2019 at 12:31 PM ^
After consideration, you are correct.
Nothing matters.
Death.

I know it's not the popular one, but it should be. Wait for it almost made me tear up a bit. It's nice to see RBs who make cuts and hit the holes rather than just bury themselves into the back of the line.
November 7th, 2019 at 10:01 AM ^
The kicker could of had Jackson easily on that return but let's just say he decided not to.
November 7th, 2019 at 5:28 PM ^
He embarrassed himself trying not to get embarrassed. Lame effort
November 7th, 2019 at 10:04 AM ^
The best has to be seeking contact. I love it when the ball carrier puts their shoulder down and eeks out a couple extra yards.
November 7th, 2019 at 10:06 AM ^
No, the voting is fun. (Though that footage of the flying wedge on the fake punt should have won.) To build the value you could either have a run-off of the best of each month or a year-end vote.
November 7th, 2019 at 10:20 AM ^
I missed flying wedge live because the dog took me out, and it was Maryland so I let it run. Now watching it, I wish I hadn't. What a football play. These are the kind of creative wacky idea plays that make me think Old Harbaugh is really back.
That said, the opening return set the mood for the day. It's ok. Relax. Nap a little. Take the dog out for some fresh air. We're playing Maryland after all ...
November 7th, 2019 at 10:32 AM ^
I think Ace needs to set up a Yes/No vote to see if he should bother keeping the vote, although the results may be skewed in favor of those who do voting.
November 7th, 2019 at 1:58 PM ^
KEEP THE FRANCHISE!
- Comments are great, but the voting reminds me that most MGoBloggers are football savvy and love nuance in addition to the big plays. Some of the sleeper clips get a lot of love in the voting like Tru Wilson's truck stick.
- We have enough threats to voting and democracy in the world right now -- don't take away our meaningless votes. The MGoBlog elite will run roughshod over infrequent contributors without the vote.
- You can use the voting to assemble a GIF playoff at year end because the Team won't be in the CFB. It will be a nice way to highlight the season once it is over.
November 7th, 2019 at 10:07 AM ^
There are few things I love more than our ball carriers doling out punishment on tacklers. Tru gets my vote, and I hope to see more of that before the end of the year.

Metellus-Hawkins INT handshake?
November 7th, 2019 at 10:31 AM ^
No poll needed. I'm not even bothering.
Comments FTW.
I vote Nico's catch on principle as I always do.
November 7th, 2019 at 10:31 AM ^
Charbonnet's patience and vision on that run is remarkable. Can't teach that.
November 7th, 2019 at 11:06 AM ^
Lets say it again for the people in the back
"wirecam on returns is undefeated"
November 7th, 2019 at 11:08 AM ^
I vote for keeping the voting. It's fun to decide on one, which I could do on my own but wouldn't. Also, it's interesting to see what gets votes.
November 7th, 2019 at 11:45 AM ^
Underrated emerging theme of this year's One Frame at a Time. What used to be the dominant purview of Harbaugh's explosive antics has been taken over by the menace of Don Brown. Dr. Blitz is more than welcome!
November 7th, 2019 at 11:59 AM ^
The Flying V looked like the rolling mauls England used to crush USA in the recent RWC.
November 7th, 2019 at 12:01 PM ^
I like the voting.
November 7th, 2019 at 12:02 PM ^
Uche deadlifting that RT - twice - is money.
November 7th, 2019 at 1:08 PM ^
underrated
November 7th, 2019 at 12:38 PM ^
Diet Bullrush is a fantastic individual effort. Uche puts the RT on skates and gets in there fast enough to take down the QB.
November 7th, 2019 at 12:40 PM ^
Upon further review of "hey it worked again," I really wish that Patterson would get that ball a little deeper and to the left. If he does that, Collins is walking into the endzone for six instead of making a miraculous catch.
November 7th, 2019 at 12:45 PM ^
I keep watching No. 5 "Hey It Worked Again" and after considering carefully, I think I may be on to something here. We may be underutilizing Nico Collins. I'm serious, has anyone else noticed this?
November 7th, 2019 at 1:08 PM ^
That fake punt is football porn.
November 7th, 2019 at 1:36 PM ^
I vote to keep the voting.
November 7th, 2019 at 2:54 PM ^
Kinda wished we saved that fake punt for OSU as well, however, putting out two fake punts this year - especially this one - ought to have hidden dividends on defense vs. returns. Right? Foes watching that film have to be concerned with putting some beef out there and keeping it on the line of scrimmage, not running back to set up blocks. Seems like the ability to fake is an advantage with this formation so I'm glad to see we are taking it.
November 7th, 2019 at 3:29 PM ^
Michael Barrett's pancake block at the 30 yard line on the KO return is freaking fantastic. Film review must have loved that.
November 7th, 2019 at 5:24 PM ^
Rutgers kicker should be embarrassed at that effort
November 8th, 2019 at 6:21 PM ^
Props to Uche and the boys but after seeing the first GIF of the whole line whiffing on cut-blocks I may have to go with Maryland being very bad.
