Michigan Gets Georgia In College Football Playoff(!) Comment Count

Brian December 5th, 2021 at 12:28 PM

Well, here's the bracket:

  1. Alabama
  2. Michigan
  3. Georgia
  4. Cincinnati

Georgia was the SEC runner-up after an undefeated regular season but lost to Alabama 41-24 in the SEC championship game. Michigan will play them at the Orange Bowl in Miami on New Year's Eve.

There is no content after the jump.

Oh stop it. No one is playing dumb, that is an absolutely ABSURD take and you know it.

Complete bullshit.

You putting in ND over them? What's their best win?

OSU?

2 loss Baylor? EDIT: THREE loss Baylor. Lol EDIT #2...nope, was right the first time. 2 losses. San Diego St. and Iowa St.

Fuck outta here. Don't play dumb, kiss my entire as for that remark. Only an idiot would think Georgia shouldn't be in the playoff.

You want to put Cincinnati over them? Absolutely, go for it. But saying they shouldn't be in the playoff because they lost to one of the best 2 teams in the country on the final day is ridiculous.

It was all of 2 whole years ago a non-bama $EC team went undefeated,  winning the NC, with ~9 players taken in the 1st rd of the subsequent draft.

And all of 5 years ago the CFP Title game was played between 2 $EC teams.

We can cry all we want, but they've earned the respect. And if you think they're undeserving you should be delighted we get the chance to beat 2 of them - if Cinci doesn't beat 1 first!

I miss college football back when no one really gave a fuck about conferences.  Before the SEC began their branding exercises, getting people to use the notion of conference strength as a stand-in for schedule strength, giving talking points to networks that fans now parrot verbatim.  You are literally an unpaid salesman for their recruiting pitch.

"Best conference" is meaningless.  Especially when divisions and schedules are terribly unbalanced.  Look at the actual schedules instead.

If you are going for faux outrage at least get your basic facts right. Baylor has 2 losses not three. They also have a top 5 win and 2 top 15 wins... Georgia's best win is #20 3-loss clemson.

ESPN threw up a "top 40 wins" metric which I guess favors the SEC, but other than that Georgia played a B1G west schedule.

You're correct...they were 9-2 and won. That's on me.

It's not faux outrage at all. They lost to SDSU and Iowa St.

This clown is trying to tell me just because Georgia had to play an extra game against one of the best 2 teams in the country and they lost...they should be out. That's garbage.

Bama would MOP THE FLOOR with Baylor too. So they should be out? Fuck outta here.

Except they aren’t.  Not unless you’re willing to give ND a bye every year.  I don’t think the committee has any idea what to do with conference championships.  I don’t either to be honest.  I understand people not wanting a rematch from a conference championship, but I also think it’s very possible that you can lose in your conference championship game ( a la Georgia) and still be one of the best 4 teams.  The trouble I have with conference championships is they can only hurt your CFP chances of you are already ranked top 4….and not every team has to play a conference championship.  I think the committee has to come up with some rules for conference championships.

Baylor was DEFINITELY 10-2 and won, not 9-2. Is it really that hard to look at a team’s record before commenting? You’ve gotten records wrong multiple times now. Really takes credibility away from your comments if you can’t even get the record of the teams you’re talking about correct when the whole conversation is comparing resumes. You clearly don’t even KNOW the resumes of these teams.

Baylor lost to Oklahoma State and TCU. They didn’t lose to Iowa State and they didn’t even PLAY SDSU. Dude, seriously. Do some research before you comment. You’re just making yourself look silly and ignorant at this point and you completely destroy any credibility you had in your point.

Rather than complain, and rightfully so about Michigan getting screwed in the CFP final rankings, this could all play out well for the Maize and Blue. Beat those Dawgs in Miami then plan on a big Meeechigan-'Bama showdown back at Indy. It may not be fair and just but I'll take it.

Michigan clearly should be #1 over Bama.  Georgia’s best victory was Clemson and Clemson sucked at the time.  Cinci at least beat ND.   I think it is clear that it should be

1. Michigan

2. Bama

3. Cinci

4. Georgia

see where I’m going here? Win the game.  Beat Georgia.  Go Blue!

Exactly this!  Georgia has proven to be very beatable by a very good team.  M fans will be legion at Hard Rock Stadium, and there is a decent chance for M to win.

On top of all that, we have formally reached the pure gravy part of the season, from a fans perspective anyway.  What are we worried about here?  Bring on Georgia!

If Oklahoma State had won, you could justify putting them in over Georgia.  But since the only other P5 team with 1 loss is Notre Dame (who also lost to a team in the top 3) and didn't play for a conference championship (JOIN A CONFERENCE NOTRE DAME), it's harder to hold Georgia out.  I'd still have preferred a different team but I can't really argue against it

Georgia is a good team that lost to a good Alabama team.  I think they still deserve to be in the playoff.  However, I think the committee got the seeding wrong.  Bama taking the 1 spot is fine.  Michigan staying 2 is fine, although our argument for 1 is pretty damn strong.  Either way, 1-2 is fine by me.  But Cincy should have stayed at three and UGA should've dropped to 4.  Cincy goes 13-0 and gets rewarded by dropping a spot to make way for a team that lost by a definitive margin?  Complete bullshit.

And these rankings set up the potential for an all-SEC final game.  There has to be some forward thinking in the seedings.  If it's Bama Georgia in the final, then you would have 3/4 of the country not giving a shit.  I think Michigan is going to give Georgia hell and rain fire on them so what I am saying won't happen.  But still, the committee paved a road for this potential occurrence and for that I am kinda pissed.

Yes. Georgia should be out. Baylor, who won their division by beating a top-5 opponent would be much better for the sport, giving them a chance instead of giving Georgia a do-over. Or ND who also only has 1 loss to a top 5 team and better wins.

Without a common pool of opponents the only sportsman-like way of choosing a champion is having conference winners play each other. Everything else is bad for the sport.

Honest question:  How does ND have "better wins" than Georgia?  Notre Dame didn't beat a single team that finished in the top-25 and beat one team (Wisconsin) who was ranked when they played (and Wisconsin had five turnovers in that game).  Georgia has three wins over teams that finished in the top-25 and four against teams who were ranked at the time.

Whether or not Baylor playing in the CFP would be better for the sport, they finished with a worse record than Georgia, and lost to a team who finished with a losing record (TCU).

I can understand not wanting to see two SEC teams in the playoffs, and you argue about seeding, but I don't see how ND or Baylor have a better resume than Georgia.

ND i will accept as an alternative to Uga. Only loss to #4 team.

Baylor? No chance, they lost to 5-7 TCU + there's never been a 2 loss team yet and that resume certainly should not be the 1st!

As for winning your division but not your conference, we had a CFP winner do that before. Ultimately you want the best teams in, right?
