Three is worth more than two.

In one of the most unbelievable offensive showcases these eyes have seen at any level, that core tenet of John Beilein's offense proved the difference.

In a tight contest from start to finish, Michigan couldn't keep Oklahoma State's Jawun Evans from getting into the paint. Evans poured in 23 points and handed out 12 assists, and many of his 16 misses led to second-chance points for the Cowboys. OSU pulled down 16 offensive boards to Michigan's six; they outscored the Wolverines 50-20 in the paint.

Michigan, on the other hand, had a difficult time working their way inside. After clinging to a one-point halftime lead because they took care of the basketball, they laid waste to OSU's defense from the perimeter, sinking 11 of their 15 second-half three-point attempts.

Derrick Walton, to nobody's surprise, led the second-half charge. After a 1-for-6 first half, Walton didn't hesitate to rise and fire from as far out as the edge of the midcourt logo, and for good reason: he scored 19 in the final stanza, hitting 5-of-6 threes.

"It's a lot of fun, first and foremost, to know you have that rock that you can always count on," Duncan Robinson said of Walton. "He's been so good and we go as he goes, so hopefully he's got a little bit more left in the tank."

"I just tapped into the fact that I know I've worked really hard," said Walton. "Just the mindset and the trust these guys have in me, that makes me go out and just play much more free knowing they have a lot of confidence in me."

Robinson and Zak Irvin also hit huge shots down the stretch from beyond the arc. DJ Wilson came up with big plays on both ends of the floor, including the game-sealing free-throws to put Michigan up four before Evans drilled an inconsequential—unless you're a gambler—triple at the buzzer.

That capped one of the most entertaining, exhilarating, and stressful games of this college basketball season. So much happened in the second half that it's hard to remember that the game got off to a sluggish start; the two teams were knotted up at 11 at the under-12 timeout. OSU pushed ahead with a swift 9-0 run, then Michigan hit back when John Beilein threw caution to the wind and re-inserted Moe Wagner despite his two early fouls. Both squads settled into a groove, giving a taste of what was to come after the break.

The Cowboys again jumped out to a lead after halftime, and that was only a small part of Michigan's concern, as Walton briefly exited the game with an apparent ankle issue. He returned with the Wolverines down six points; that gap closed to two on M's next three possessions, in which Walton hit a three and dished out two assists. A pair of Wagner free throws deadlocked the game at 59 with 13 minutes to play; from there, Michigan's deadeye shooting made the difference.

While the Wolverines couldn't string together stops, neither could the Cowboys, and Michigan's shots were coming from beyond the arc. With that, the Wolverines needed one decent defensive stretch, and they got that with two stops at the rim—including a huge block by DJ Wilson that led to Walton's midcourt bomb—and a charge drawn on OSU center Mitchell Solomon. Subsequent triples by Wilson and Walton sandwiched around a Phil Forte two-pointer got the lead to eight with 6:47 left.

That held steady until a late OSU comeback push that appeared to be stymied by long jumpers from Irvin and Walton. Robinson missed the front end of two late one-and-ones, however, which added some serious drama to the final moments until Wilson's pair of free throws sealed it.

Michigan took this game despite a quiet performance from Wagner, who scored six points in only 14 minutes as Beilein went with Wilson at the five for much of the second half. Wilson finished with 19 points, while Irvin and Muhammed-Ali Abdur-Rahkman each added 16. That proved just enough to overcome Evans and a very efficient 19-point outing from Jeffrey Carroll.

Hopefully, we can catch our collective breath in time for Sunday's game, which will almost certainly be against two-seed Louisville.

that was two of the top 5 offenses in basketball playing at their best.  From that perspective there may not be a better one.  But there will be a game with higher stakes and a better finish that nears or exceeds the level of play on both sides of the court (instead of just one).

But helluva game and certainly the best so far.

I know it  has to do with size of lead of course and time left. Many coaches, when trying to milk a lead in the last minute do not want that clock to stop, especially on an over the back, rebound attempt. I might run a 3/4 court defense. But if I assisted under Belein or Knight, i'd probably do exactly what they do.

phew that was fun.  We did the one thing we didn't want to do: give up a boatload of OREBs, but we made up for it by doing the one thing they didn't want us to do: go off from 3 point land.

Imagine if we had one of those leapy rim protectors like Louisville (unleashes hookers onto to get)? I mean, playing 5 out is nice but I'd trade that for 4 out and a little better rim protection.

Wagner.  He was completely lost in the second half while they started 8 of 9.  Every time they scored it was like the guards would look at him and be like, dude, little help?  And he just shrugged.  Not sure what he thought the plan was, but he's not good at contesting shots anyway.

Took him out, went with DJ as the rim protector, he did an admirable job against an insanely good offense and we got some stops to bring it home.

Against small-ball offenses that can attack the rim and force help, Mo is unfortunately a huge liability.  I wonder if we can stick him on stretch fours against teams like that to keep DJ in the middle.

That they anxiety has subsided and the result favored the good guys... That was an extremely entertaining game to watch. Jawun Evans is a PROBLEM. Thank you basketball gods for DWJ!

This is a fun team to watch. Walton's leadership is extremely evident. I wish we had more than just followers, though. If Walton goes cold at any point, we are likely toast.

in most games we won't have to score 1.42 ppp.  Walton was cold against Purdue - he went 3-10, 1-5 from three - and we still beat the big ten champs.  And DJ stepped up.  Mo can step up, depending on matchups.  MAAR and even Irvin (think Wisconsin regular season games).  We have plenty of offensive weapons to still have a chance, even against the teams we'll face the rest of the way.

Had to listen to the game at work. Did OSU not try to defend the 3? For as much as we rely on them, I was surprised how many we made in a row in the 2nd half. Was it a good turnout for Michigan fans? I could hear them loud and clear on the radio.

1. Michigan ran some beautiful plays. Walton created space and dished to open guys, and the whole team did a great job of finding open spots.

2. Okie St. is not a great defensive team. Someone compared Evans to James Harden - not inaccurate.

3. Michigan was just on fire. They got hot, and the momentum kept them going. I think the up-and-down pace kept them loose too.

The easiest look was the layup that DJ missed - very few easy looks.  OSU was extending the circle but very few backdoor opportunities and many of the shots were deep.  M did a good job at staying patient and making the extra pass to get a slightly better look on several possessions and never looked dead legged on the long shots.  Irvin made some nice moves to create space for himself.  Wislon hit a 3 on a nice pick and pop with Walton that was relatively uncontested, Robinson's shots were all contested.  All in all it was just one of those lights out shooting performances that are rare and amazing to watch.  This is a great shooting team but this was just an entirely other level, that let's pray does not have to be repeated.

And they are all talking about how M hit contested three after contested three.

Now I realize that it's not just the B12 teams that don't understand defense. Their fans have no clue either.

I saw open look after open look for our guys in the second half today. Read somewhere around here that M was 11/12 on open looks today, and 5/17 on contested looks. That feels about right.

We shot well, but about half of our looks were uncontested or lightly contested.

simply because I had never seen anything like it, so I was not surprised to read the 3 pts made was a record along with the .74 pct from 3 point range in the second half. If was incredible.

Ok. State was seemingly carving Michigan up for a long time. And they never stopped owning the offensive glass. But then Michigan decided to hit an absurd number of threes. It seems like it shouldn't have worked, but here we are.

Michigan is going to be must-see TV as long as they're in the tournament.

- Tough draw against very good teams

- Incredibly fun to watch

- Absolutely smoking hot right now - first the B1G tournament, then raining 3's

- Irresistible back story with plane crash

almost all parts seem to be on every game.  Irvin has been consistently solid, and DJ is growing before our eyes by leaps and bounds.  I expect Mo to break out of his "quiet time" and give L'ville some hell.

If anyone is in Indy and runs to Derrick Walton Junior, tell him right before tip-off Sunday that the Big Ten has retroactively relegated him to its fourth team all-conference squad.

I am so happy, yet so relieved with this win today! Not that asshole Pitino's bunch will be easy, but I was more concerned about OK st. We 3 bombed them today...Was a thing of beauty!

A lot of people are talking about how stressful the game was, but what's weird is that the last time Okie St had the ball with a chance to tie or take the lead was at the 9:38 mark. Maybe people mean stress induced by repeated failure to box out...

If we keep shooting (and controlling the ball) like that we can run the table, but if we keep rebounding like that we could lose by 20 to any team that's left. Maybe the rebounding was so poor because 4 of our starters had to play so many minutes as such a frenetic pace.
