NFL Draft: Who do you want for the Lions?
Surprisingly enough, the NFL draft is here and its been more quiet than I am used to. Normally there is a good month of non-stop talk, but I do not think that is the case this year.
For me, I want to see Derrius Guice. Enough of the tip-toeing around the running back situation. The Lions have not had a 100 yard rusher in a millenium. The offensive line has been pretty well addressed with Lang, Wagner, and hopefully a healthy Decker. They cannot keep trotting out guys like Abdullah, Riddick, etc...
I think a case can be made for most of the positions on this team; however, I want to see the Lions get a guy they can plug in the backfield and provide a much-needed spark.

"None of our guys are a threat from the backfield, not even the threatening guy that lines up in the backfield."

Vea
Payne
Davenport
Landry
or Bryan
or trade down and grab Wynn or one of these guys if many of them are available
April 26th, 2018 at 10:58 AM ^
And put Vea in there.
April 26th, 2018 at 10:48 AM ^
Best D-Lineman available and there should be plenty given the way this draft is shaping up.
April 26th, 2018 at 10:51 AM ^
would love to see 6 QB's drafted before our pick - 5 are sure to go - Rudolph could as QB's get overdrafted
April 26th, 2018 at 11:00 AM ^
My largest hope is someone is clammering to get that 6th QB and trade away to much to the Lions to get in and take him or someone significantly falls do to all the QB's taken. Doubt it will happen but I got dreams.

That'll do.
April 26th, 2018 at 10:53 AM ^
Lets try again:
More Chris Spielman, Less Andre Ware
April 26th, 2018 at 10:53 AM ^
Unheralded but just a stud with 2,200 yards rushing. .4.46 in the 40; 5-11, 220 or about the same size as Sanders, returns kickoffs. I'd draft a DL in the first and Penny in the second with an OL in the third.
April 26th, 2018 at 10:55 AM ^
Freeman
Chubb
Michel
Walton
lots of RB's in this draft - we can grab a good one in round 3
April 26th, 2018 at 10:54 AM ^
To paraphrase Bo, three things can happen with a draft pick and two of them are bad:
1. They perform to or exceed expectations; (Good)
2. They do not perform to expectations; or (Bad)
3. They have injury or character issues. (Bad)
Trade picks for "2-3 years in the NFL" players that have proven themselves, particularly to teams that are desperate.
April 26th, 2018 at 11:01 AM ^
Those three things are also the options for traded players.
April 26th, 2018 at 12:20 PM ^
Matt Millen would have been a lot better at it than he was.
There are plenty of safe picks and risky picks with high ceilings. They don't all have to hit. Just minimizing risk is no way to turn a middling team into a contender. It's they way to remain a middling team.

seems like a real longshot.
April 26th, 2018 at 12:45 PM ^
Their #1 need is an edge rusher, but after Landry they're all projects like LVE who don't fit what Patricia wants to do. Pairing Slay with another elite corner who can play right away is going to be more impactful then taking a second-rate DT who needs seasoning . That's why Alexander is the contingency plan. He has the size and speed to be another shutdown CB. They can absolutely go G or RB with the second round pick and get commensurate value. At #20, with the early run on quarterbacks, they have a unique opportunity to get an impact guy with top-10 talent. Landry and Alexander are those guys. Vaea is the only first-round DT talent, but he'll be long gone by #20. I'm also okay with them trading down for an extra pick.
many have red-flagged his knee issue

End the curse
April 26th, 2018 at 11:22 AM ^
and one of these...
April 26th, 2018 at 11:22 AM ^
1. Vea
2. Payne
3. Landry
If all 3 are gone, try and trade back
April 26th, 2018 at 11:29 AM ^
I would love it if Vita Vea was still on the borad at #20 for the Lions and with our 2nd round pick I'm hoping Ronald Jones or Sony Michael are still available and if both are, I go with Jones for sure.
Other 1st rounders I'd be very happy with - Payne, Landry, Evans and Hernandez
Other 2nd rounders I'd be very happy with - Hurst, Hurst, Hurst, N. Chubb, Guice
The rest of the rounds please just get quality players for much needed depth and maybe a 5th or 6th round steal to produce an instant starter!! Fingers crossed!
Go Lions!
April 26th, 2018 at 11:35 AM ^
If the Lions feel they must reach and overdraft a RB at least have the common decency to trade back 5-10 spots in the first round and pick up an extra 3rd or 4th or something.
No TEs either until day 3.
April 26th, 2018 at 11:42 AM ^
Mo Hurst would be my favorite pick, becuase he is an obvious top 10 talent being mocked as late as the fourth round? His heart condition is not even a problem. Ask the doctors at Michigan. At Harvard. I'd trust them over NFL doctors any day of the week. Idk, if he is going to fall, let him fall and take him in the 2nd.
Just not impressed with this draft class. Everyone wants the Lions to draft a RB but I don't see a great one available. Calvin Ridley could come off the board around 20, but do we need a WR? DT/DE/OL is probably going to be the pick and that's good I guess.
More important that they get quality out of picks 1,2,3,4 than they get just a great 1st pick. I think Quinn is assembling a solid NFL team, which is great for us Lions fans. Getting lucky could push us over the top to a Super Bowl contender at some point down the line. But none if it will matter if Patricia can't coach.
April 26th, 2018 at 11:44 AM ^
A WR is the only correct answer.
April 26th, 2018 at 11:50 AM ^
one from msu that likes his weed?
April 26th, 2018 at 11:55 AM ^
That would be as logical as a WR.

Hot Take Alert:
I think he is the best reciever in the draft, a difference maker, and what the lions need.
thanks,
jdon

How much the Lions spent in the off-season on OL, right?
TJ Lang, Ricky Wagner. And not to mention, Decker basically could not function last season. Those 3 guys fully healthy will make a massive difference. They can't waste a 1st rounder on another O-linemen. There are a lot more pressing positions to fix.

a LG
too bad Tomlinson was a massive bust
LG, DL are the biggest needs
then get RB and TE
April 26th, 2018 at 12:55 PM ^
Is not a MASSIVE need. It's a need, but it's not one you need to be drafting in the top 2 picks.
April 26th, 2018 at 12:57 PM ^
I said Tomlinson was a massive bust
If the Lions trade down and grab more picks, I like Wynn as a late first/early 2nd round choice, but other than that I want DL
April 26th, 2018 at 10:30 PM ^
word is he goes to Guard and Glasgow at Center
April 26th, 2018 at 12:03 PM ^
Completely new ownership that wants to win, and will open the checkbook to go get the best General Manager, Scouts, and Coaching Staff they can. The same checkbook needs to be open for hungry, talented, competitive players who also want to win.

One playoff win since the Super Bowl started in the late 60s. One. Un-fucking-real...
Say you can't blame the Fords? Check out the GMs, Coaches and Draft Picks as hired and/or managed by the Ford family over the last 50 years. You can and should blame the Fords. No wonder they wouldnt let William Clay Ford Sr run the car company. He couldnt effectively run a Subway franchise, much less a NFL franchise.
Best pro team in Detroit over the past 50 years? The Michigan Panthers of the USFL in the early 80s. Bobby Hebert to Anthony Carter.
Ford family - Your auto stock is dropping - time to sell the Lions and give the fans a chance at a winning team!!!

I'm not calling to replace Martha. She has done a nice job getting the right people in place, and keeping Caldwell around to solidify a foundation to build off of. The last four seasons were 4 of the 6 best seasons since 2001. Quinn seems like a promising hire so far. We will see how it goes with Patricia. IMO, it'd be wrong to not give the current regime a shot.
tell you how many times I have heard "let's give the new GM/Coach a chance" in the Lions' 50 years of futility. And with morons. The common denominator over those years - the Fords.
Saying 4 of the past 6 seasons were the most promising in years as a Lions fan is like saying that Canada has warmer weather than the North Pole. If you compare mediocre vs. suck - mediocre looks a lot better, but it is still mediocre.
I like Quinn all right, and Patricia is undefeated as a coach. Great. Quinn can be GM under the new owner. Lions will suck until the Ford's sell. Period.
But the ownership has changed already and early results are promising. The Lions have made the playoffs 2 out of four years under Martha. The William Clay Ford Sr. era is over. I think your view is outdated a bit...

but dont think Mo will be there early in 2nd round. He is too good a player, and someone will jump him late in the 1st...
I feel like Michel is too much like Abdallah for Lions. But damn - drafting a RB is a crapshoot, you may be right - who knows.
April 26th, 2018 at 12:34 PM ^
Never take a RB R1 unless he's a generational talent. Lions definitely need to go after a defensive lineman.
April 26th, 2018 at 12:44 PM ^
But if they can trade back a couple picks and get an extra second, I'd be fine if they took Guice. There's some underrated guys on the d line that are great pickups in the 2nd-4th rounds. If no trade makes sense then they have to go with a d lineman, preferably landry, davenport, or payne. Hurst will fall so they need to make sure they get him and okoronkwo later.
The Lions pick is probably worth a couple of mid 2nd round picks in a trade.
If there is a guy that a team had high on their board available at 20 and they pick from 26-32, they could do detroit's first and a third in exchange for their first and a second.
April 26th, 2018 at 12:48 PM ^
Ogbonnia Okoronkwo
Bj Hill
Justin Jones
Marcus Davenport
Mo Hurst
Mason Cole
Ronald Jones
Derwin James
Harold Landry
Will Hernandez
Michel/Chubb
Derrius Guice
Basically we need some boys that got to work on the D Line. I'm hoping they can trade down and get an extra second or third even if its late. They could go guice in the first, hurst and okoronkwo in the second, cole in the third, Justin Jones/ BJ Hill in the 4th. Build up that d line, especially the interior. I'm not as concerned with the o line since our starters only played like one or two games together last season before someone else would get hurt. I want to see how they do as a full unit before they use a first or second on a depth guy.
Edit: Forgot about Dorrance Armstrong and malik jefferson
