Way OT: Lions cut Eric Ebron
Don't know how to embed, but his release saves the Lions $8.25 million, enough to sign a decent free agent. Ebron was coming on at the end of last year, but considering who he was drafted ahead of, he was one of the larger draft disappointments the Lions had under Mayhew.

somewhere in the first few rounds at this point. The remaining top TEs on the FA market are either injury-prone (Eifert) or low-impact guys.
To be fair, Ebron was pretty low impact as well. Maybe they think Michael Roberts could take over.
on my end would have been "lower" impact guys. I agree with you though, Ebron probably wasnt going to have a big year.
Roberts may turn out fine, but they also just lost Fells. So, another TE is definitely a must get either through the draft or free agency.
I'm also unhappy to see Ebron go. I think he turned a corner the middle of last year and was positioned to become an important piece of the Lions offense this season.
Yeah and from what I heard he was a dipshit on social media to fans.
Too bad, lots of hype and promise but the dude just has perpetual case of the dropsies, it seems.
was that we could have taken Aaron Donald instead of Ebron but he went to the Rams a pick or 2 later, sigh in the biggest way.
I'd feel better if we still had Fells. But the Browns grabbed him.
Hopefully the money (and passes) will be going to somebody more reliable
This looks like a solid move. Use the money to bolster the DLine. Find a TE in the draft and FA.
To me is like when there's a neighborhood garage sale and everybody basically just trades their old, useless junk for their neighbors old, useless junk.
Some team somewhere is now eyeing Ebron as their pass recieving TE who can stretch a defense just like the Lions did when they drafted him.
Browns picked up Fells from the Lions already.
Michael Roberts and Hakeem Valles with a combined 4 catches.
....and some would say that prior to cutting him they still only had 2 TEs.
Probably not.
A bust? Yeah.
He needed to be cut. But I can't go that far, calling him one of the worst draft selections in recent NFL history. That's a stretch.
Yeah Sam Bradford says hi as he signs a 20 millon dollar contract. I think Eric Weddle said it best (and pay close attention to the last part) :

He "averaged" to be a pretty average starting TE, and his highs didn't make up for his lows. He really isn't bad, he's just not what you aim for with a 1st round pick and he isn't worth the money he was set to make. If the Lions could bring him back $4M a year, that would be a pretty solid FA move.
The fact the stupid Lions braintrust picked a TE at number 10 shouldnt color peoples judgement of the fact he had a breakout last 8 games this past season. He will continue his rise and Lions fans will be saying WTF when hes a stud on another team. I really hope the Lions have a plan and that its not Jimmy Graham. Graham had more drops than Ebron last year and is washed up.
That said last years production isnt worth the absurd amount of money he was due to make. I just hope we dont regret this day.
This is such a SOL situation it makes me want to puke. Take a guy too high, release him and watch him become a superstar and win Superbowls.
/cough Tony Mandarich /cough
I still clearly recall jumping around the room upset when we passed on Donald. I could point to numerous draft selections of the Lions through the years that have made me want to throw things, but that whiff made me really upset for some reason, Such is the life of a Lions fan, I guess.
question now is, who they gonna spend that money on
I liked it thanks

This can only end in one of two ways: Either he drifts through the league, signs a paltry contract for a bottom-feeder, and leaves football in two years...
Or we watch in anguish as he gets picked up by the Pats or the Eagles and wins a couple of Super Bowls amidst "redemption" storylines featuring slow-mo highlights of Jim Caldwell looking vacantly into the distance.
I vividly remember the conversation I had the day after the draft with my PhD advisor at U of M. It went something like, "So we picked an athletic tight end with questionable hands who doesn't really block all that well? I thought we already had one of those!! (Pettigrew)".
My advisor would get very emotional when discussing the futility of the Lions organization.
In true Lions fashion those 6 or 7 in this city would have sucked while Ebron became an all pro.
Run n Shoot here we come
Glad hes gone, how many drives did he kill by dropping wide open 3rd down passes?
Ebron really played great the second half of the season and I can see him being an All-Pro at some point. Mixed feelings about this one.
I agree. In retrospect I think we will all view his release as a mistake.
