The school is writing it's legacy going forward right now with how they are handling this.
When they shielded those two coaches and let everything move forward business as usual, they condemned the school for a very long time in the eyes of the world
This article changes nothing on that front. It only makes the defenses MSU sports fans will cook up even more creative/desperate.

On my morning commute on Monday here along the lakeshore the local radio was fawning over how ethical and upstanding Tom Izzo is.
We shall see.

Brenda Tracy says that in a conversation that she had with Tom Izzo he had a backwards version of consent, blamed victims, and had a culture that protects players at the expense of girls.
February 21st, 2018 at 9:40 PM ^
None of this surprises me. I will give him a small bit of doubt in that he seems to not be able to talk about sexual assault eloquently, but I honestly don't believe he is quite as neanderthalic (sp?) as he comes across. It just reads like someone who lacks the vocabulary to process these types of issues, which is itself depressing but not all that surprising for a 63-year-old rich guy from a tiny-ass town in the UP.

Than the fact John Truscott (MSU PR) and Justin Rose (Ch. 7) actually shared something from the RCMB that was anonymously published under the title "ESPN's Paula Lavigne is a liar"
All Spartans should read this analysis of the ESPN hit piece against MSU. It is extremely well documented #MSU https://t.co/TNUHZEjhQt

Dude doesn't really try to hide his bleeding green which confuses me but then again he is in Michigan's home market and vice versa so nobody will fuss. If you went the other way around, Spartan fans would lose their minds if a Michigan alum were in their reporting group.
February 21st, 2018 at 9:58 PM ^
I don't think we have a single alum that's working the UM beat for Freep or DetNews. Chengelis has been here for so long that you'd think she's an alum, but she went to U-Cincinnati. Wojo reports on everybody. Funny that the ones who screwed over our program were actual alumni.

Yeah, I read about a quarter of that "article" and good lord is it the usual bullshit. They cite the Jones Day report as if it is gospel but seemingly get the dates all wrong; that report was only focused on the handling of the sexual assaults a year ago; the claims against Dantonio (e.g. him having a player accused of sexual assault to talk to his mom) were from instances 7 years ago.
Also, and you'd think we'd have learned this by now, but "independent reports" that took place over only a couple of months and paid by the school are not always the most objective analysis of a situation. But I'll concede this report is arguing that, yes, Dantonio told people about the King, etc. assault. It also showed that Blackwell didn't comply with his duties, which creates that grey area of "senior leaders" vs. director of whatever Curtis Blackwell was in terms of who responded properly.
And don't get me started about their OCR "findings", which they claim Lavigne ignored. If they had actually read the report, it said:
OCR determined that a sexually hostile environment existed for and affected numerous students and staff on campus at the University during the time period covered by OCR’s investigation; and that the University’s failure to address complaints of sexual harassment, including sexual violence, in a prompt and equitable manner caused and may have contributed to a continuation of this sexually hostile environment
And as for the sexual assault by Payne/Appling, the report only concluded that despite MSU's ongoing failure to support sexual assault victims, they hadn't failed in their support/created a hostile environment for the victims in this instance. The OCR is not equipped to perform a criminal adjudication of the actual claims, and they didn't here. The "preponderance of evidence" claims relate to the standard MSU's student legal system should apply to its handling of these assaults, which the report seemingly makes a lot of effort in pointing out MSU did a bad job at. They didn't rule on whether or not Appling and Payne assaulted her, only that MSU didn't follow their own standards in adjudicating it.
It's just...it's a shitty post from a message board that some MSU goobers in the media latched on to because reading some legal briefs is beyond the pale for people in the position of reporting on pressing matters, but apparently is well within the ability of a guy sitting on his couch trying to get a NodeJS API to run properly and hasn't practiced as an attorney for about a decade.

According to this article, and what seems to be known - this is the timeline.
Alleged assault occurs on Sunday, August 29th.
Assault reported to police on Monday, August 30th.
Police brief Izzo and Hollis on Tuesday, August 31st.
Investigation completed and a decision to not file charges on Thursday, September 2nd.
I have to ask - how the hell can such a serious charge be investiged and referred to the DA and a final decision rendered in like 48 hours?
Is this normal? How would you even get a rape kit processed that fast?
I believe other reports mention that the victim in this instance was counseled by the DA that she might not want to go forward due to the trauma of having to testify.
Can a legal eagle explain how on earth you can get all this done in 1-2 working days?

Remember the timing there too. Those were two monster recruits, especially Appling. Whom I believe was Mr. Basketball or runner up. Izzo had just gotten to his 8th Final Four in a dozen years. I doubt he lost more than a time or two to Michigan the previous decade. The 2009 team had been celebrated as "bringing back Detroit" in that Final Four. Then in that summer of 2010, he spent around 3 weeks flirting with the Cavaliers' job. Basically waiting on Lebron's decision. Prompting MSU fans to rally for him to stay outside the basketball arena.During the summer no less.
That is some powerful mojo for a guy at the apex of his powers. And very powerful reasons to make bad things go away without examination.
We saw the danger similarly with Paterno when your adulation becomes cultish and make a man bigger than the institution. The pressure on men in those positions is immense to live up to an image. It's easier to do the minimum and steer clear of bad press rather than do the right thing. A lower standard than if the abused was their loved one.
February 22nd, 2018 at 1:35 PM ^
That's like asking "What did Nixon do wrong?"
He knew that two of his most promising players had been accused of rape, that the "investigation" and dismissal and cover-up (players moved off campus) were all hastily performed in house, and then allowed both players to have a four year career without any punishment. Because Izzo benefitted from the institutional insulation does not exempt him from the fact that the insulation was FOR HIM.
I've said it since day one of the Nassar hearings: they will give up Lou Simmons, they will give up Hollis, they will give up all the trustees. But don't let anyone lay a hand on the Precious. You have fucked up priorities first, and all the crooks fill in the blanks in support of it.
February 22nd, 2018 at 4:42 PM ^
No doubt about it Jim.
However, I believe both Izzo and Dantoni will be caught up in their own web of lies before it is over.
February 22nd, 2018 at 12:14 PM ^
"Told ya....Tom and Mark dint know nuttin"...... "What else ya expect em to do?" MSU fan response to whatever new reports come out
Not hard to figure out why both guys went into hide and duck mode immediately. If I had a job making 7 figures plus, a cult of personality worship among tens of thousands of people, unlimited power without ever having to take any blame..... jeesh, someone coming in wrecking my good time with legitimate questions about my motives and judgment would scare the hell out of me too.
