Toledo's offensive stats in 2017:
Total offense- 14th
FIrst Downs- 11th
Passing offense- 26th
Rushing Offense- 29th
Scoring Offense- 16th
Pass efficiency- 7th
Yards per game- 485.1
Would have been a great hire by all accounts. Also, in many minds he was somebody this fanbase has wanted to replace drevno at OC. Wright will be a highly pursued power5 coordinator in the next year or so, so getting him early would have been wise. He was also a top nominee for the Broyles Award this year. In other news, things are getitng very, very interesting in regarding this programs search for another coach.

So if O'Korn played simply B10 average QB level against MSU and OSU then during the game OSU/MSU would have had a different game plans and all the other variables would have changed? This isn't a time travel Star Trek film. Actually I think your argument is the ridiculous one. If he played at average level, both games were ours, and that is simply obvious to any observer.

this position is somewhat different than your post I responded to. More nuanced, and I'm in partial agreement with it. I definitely agree that it doesn't mean anything for next year, but he did make the point that perhaps the bad taste from last year would have been slightly better with better play from one position on the field, QB. If that is fixed next year, even with the same level play from the OL (no improvement, which I don't expect) we could win 10, and people will feel much better.

I hadn't even heard that he interviewed or was a contender. It's a position coach role, so I don't blame him as an OC that will probably get to be a full OC at a big program soon.
I'd like a WR coach for that spot that has played the position, but I think McElwain would be a great hire as well. Say what you will about his last year at Florida, but he has a great offensive track record before that and to have him as a position coach would be a home run in my opinion.

I think he'd be a good PCG or OC as well - I mean he objectively has been a great OC in the recent past - but one step at a time.

I mean, I'd agree with that, but I also don't share the angst over the "too many cooks in the kitchen" ordeal. Pretty much every team uses a collaborative playcalling system on offense. Ohio State sure as hell does - both Day and Wilson (previously Beck and Warriner) have a say, then it goes to Meyer who makes the final call. I don't think that process had a measurable negative effect on our offense last year (or any year).

And hope that he doesn't find any of those mythical freshwater sharks to distract him from coaching circles around Pep and Drevno.

Those numbers are way short of Don Brown, but it was just a position coach job.
Emmett Jones has been WR position coach for a top-5 productive position group for several years at Texas Tech.
That would be a Don-Brown-style hire for a WR assistant
Plus, he is very, very connected in Texas recruiting. Look at what UTexas pulled in this year--almost entirely in-state for them.

That/he is exactly what this team needs too. We have no True WR coach and need one badly. Our Wr core is so young and doesn't have the proper technique in route running that they should have. A true wr coach would also give them advice and inside tricks of the trade that other coaches with on and off wr experience would not be able to give.

I just have some apprehension about spread WR coaches, they're not teaching a whole lot of different routes. The best WR coach in the nation by all accounts is Kasey Dunn from Ok State. I still don't know if even he would transition well to our offense, because they run such simple route trees in spread systems. Maybe they would, but it'd be an adjustment for them.

It is assumed to be the WR coach since Enos left that position. However, with the experience some of these staff members have, there is positional flexibility as to who does what. Mostly b/w Pep and the new hire. Pep can do both WRs and QBs. I hope he does WRs to be honest, because I thought his work with Terrelle Pryor was pretty impressive. In contrast, his work with QBs outside of Luck has been meh at best

The lack of improvement from Perry, Crawford, and McDoom this season is concerning. None of our freshmen who got a lot of playing time did much either. The position group as a whole started slow and finshed the same. We need new blood teaching these guys or a much stronger focus teaching from the current staff.

DPJ improved a ton over the course of the year. If you can't see that then I can't help you. Now, that may have just come from experience, since he is fresh out of high school, and not coaching, idk.
Black was on pace for 600 yards before he got hurt.
Perry is what he is, he has a lower athletic ceiling than others at the position. He still got open a ton this year despite not having someone that could reliably get him the ball.
The position will absolutely get better because of their youth, and I agree that they deserve a coach who knows his shit, but I saw improvement from DPJ, I saw Black ready to be a star, I saw Nico get onto the field, and I saw Perry do pretty much what he's always done given his abilities. I think it's wrong to say that the freshmen who got to play late into the season, DPJ and Nico, didn't improve, they certainly did.

Didn't play well in the bowl game =/= Did not improve a ton over the course of the season.
He had a couple drops in the game. He had a couple other nice catches. He's a freshman. He got a lot better this year.
February 11th, 2018 at 6:16 AM ^
Was expecting more from DPJ. IMO I think Black will have a higher ceiling than DPJ at UM. I just wasn't that impressed with the play of DPJ and at the end of the year came away with more of a meh I've seen better feeling.
February 11th, 2018 at 11:28 AM ^
I always want more from the players, but it is hard when you have so many different people throwing you passes as you try and learn college game and college. JOK and Peters and Speight all have different velocities and timing. In the end, if the ball is there: catch it. Yet, some of the struggles for more improvement relies on having an inconsistent pitching machine. Constant adjustment, mentally and phsyically.

also was flat out robbed from a TD that he rightfully earned.
He's got many more in him

He started getting open and showed some good leaping ability going up high for some balls. I had kind of written him off at the beginning of the season but he could be a good 3rd WR.
February 12th, 2018 at 12:48 AM ^
I never said the freshmen didn't improve. I said they didn't do much...and they didn't. DPJ barely did anything at WR all year. How can you say he improved so much? He had 10 catches in his first 7 games for 137 yards and 12 catches in his last 6 games for 140 yards. That is a marginal improvement, not to mention he made crucial mistakes late in the year. I agree he looked improved but he went from disappointing to kind of ok last year. You make it sound like he blew up. He had zero receiving TDs all year long. Please explain that ton of improvement you saw. Black and DPJ are uber talented and I hope our coaches can mold and teach that talent effectively. Will they is yet to be seen.
Having an athletic ceiling does not mean you stop improving. He is not physically able to improve as much as others but Perry should still improve right up until he graduates. The position will get better becuase 2017 was rock bottom. You are damn right these guys deserve a coach who knows his shit. Do we have that coach? I don't know, but 2017 has bred reasonable doubt.

February 10th, 2018 at 10:09 PM ^
Yeah he flames out at UF. So did Muschamp. And he just beat Harbaugh.
Mac wouldn’t be calling plays. And even if he was, he was a good OC at Bama and had success at CSU and ran a good offense there too.
Him being a WR coach and out there recruiting for M would be a good thing. If he eventually wound up as OC that’d be fine too.
February 11th, 2018 at 1:17 AM ^
I think the biggest red flag about hiring him is that he made up death threats to cover for the shitty job he did. How in the world could anyone trust him after that?

February 11th, 2018 at 6:31 AM ^
It would be nice to have a true OC. What UM has now needs retooling to say the least. The coaching hires/non-hires with all the different titles and positions they might coach is getting quite comical. Could it really be that hard to find a coach more capable of fielding a better offense than what we have seen?
February 10th, 2018 at 8:46 PM ^
McElwain would be a really strong hire. Good recruiter. Probably a good coach. Um..weird personality, but nothing disqualifying.
Not losing any sleep about missing (or passing) on a guy that ran a good MAC offense.
