National Signing Day open thread
Welcome to National Signing Day. It's time for faxes to start rolling in.
Do we keep Otis Reese? That seems to be the only big question of the day.
Here's the official NSD webpage from MGoBlue:

Yeah, how many times have we seen a guy ramble on about the importance of academics and then pick the lowest-rated school on his list?
It's like a free agent saying "It's not about the money." Assume the opposite.

Wasn't that setup based off someone's twitter feed because the site was unstable around signing day the last couple of years? But the AD might have something aside from Twitter...

texted STOP after the festivities were done. I think it was done by the AD itself. I'm assuming I'll be getting texts as the faxes start to come in again.

What's the text number that you're getting the updates from?
February 7th, 2018 at 9:35 AM ^
I don't know if that's because none have come in yet or I have to re-sign up. I've upgraded phones since last Feb so I can't go back and find the messages.

We're only waiting on one guy.
Give me your number and I'll call you personally when it happens.

While I like Early Signing Day for both the schools and athletes, I have the exact feeling I had on Christmas morning as a child when my parents relented and let us open our gifts on Christmas Eve. Still happy to see what was in the stocking, grateful for what we got, but not quite as excited as years past when we only opened a couple gifts on Christmas Eve*.
*Those couple of gifts would be like Early Enrollees in my strained analogy.

It's like when you visit your relatives the day after Christmas.
They have a tree and they even have presents for you . . . but it's not the same thrill, and all you get are socks and a Hot Wheel you already have.

The little harder could be the problem.

I don't want to be totally negative but we have really bungled O-line recruiting at or near the signing deadline the last couple years. Losting Hamilton to Stanford, Wilson to Georgia, and NPF is brutal. We are really lucky there was an early signing period this year so we had guys locked in before all our staff changes started happening. I'm not complaining about recruiting overall, we just have had bad luck or something on these late O-line guys.

Wilson committed to Georgia in mid-December. We got Chuck Filiaga in January.
It's the nature of the beast with big-time recruits. Big-time players have several big-time programs trying to pull them in difference directions. When there are 5 teams with a good shot at a kid in January/February, you're probably only going to win about 20% of those battles.

some well needed perspective. Thanks.

so why do people think we "lost" him
February 7th, 2018 at 9:30 AM ^
But at this point, we need some steels from other teams. The kid from Rice would help.

one left, but we still have 5 remaining from last year's class, 4 of which red-shirted

He's buried on the bench at Oklahoma.
February 7th, 2018 at 11:59 AM ^
He played in 5 games last year.
He was basically their #3 Tackle - behind:
Orlando Brown - Unanimous first-team All-American, Big 12 Offensive Lineman of the Year, Outland Trophy finalist
Bobby Evans - All-Big 12 Honorable Mention
I think "buried on the bench" is a little inaccurate.

I'll let Quinn Mittermeier know he's been demoted.

Uh, yeah...and let's not be so quick to forget what that situation was.

It's certainly not an exciting day for us as UM fans, but we still do have 3-4 verbal commits that need to sign today.
Defintely not as climatic as when Rashan Gary announced 2 years ago, though.
