He did well at Fresno State, CSU, and Bama. It wasn't till he met and hired Doug Nussmeier that his offense cratered.
February 7th, 2018 at 9:36 AM ^
damn good job at CSU. I think it could be a good hire as an assitant. I would say he's kind of like Hoke. Good position coach and recruiter not cut out to be an HC at a power 5 school.

But also for the shark

Next year, defensive players who get a turnover will be handed a shark stuffed animal on the sideline to hump.

Isn't that the Jimmy John's guy?
February 6th, 2018 at 9:18 PM ^
It just looks like the old boy network spins its roulette wheel and we make another uninspired hire. This is the guy who left Florida in disgrace after saying his family was getting death threats!
Somebody who really really knows your stuff, tell me this is the hire that puts us over the top.
February 6th, 2018 at 11:08 PM ^
to take us over the top? Seems a bit out of whack. Just curious, who among our offensive assistants has a better resume for their job?
February 7th, 2018 at 12:26 AM ^
Agreed. As a DC this would be a bad hire, but as a 10th coach? Who should we fucking hire? Saban? Meyer?
All things equal, I would prefer a young up and coming person, I guess, but I think we're being a little too picky if we think a failed Power 5 head coach can't add value as the 10th assistant...
February 7th, 2018 at 2:06 AM ^
It wasn't so long ago that a young up and coming coach came to Ann Arbor and was the masturbatory fantasy of Mgobelievers around the country. Look what he did at Alabama they would gleefully chime.
Yeah, look what he did to Michigan they would gloomily say 11 months later.
Don't get me wrong, I can see a lot of good with going with a young coach, but we're talking about being an assistant for Jim Harbaugh. I think somebody with proven creds and the character to stand up with Harbaugh is needed. Don Brown is that man for the defense, I've no idea if Drevno is, I suspect he does what he's told without question, same same with Hamiliton.
Aside from his hire of Nussmeier, McElwain has a pretty good track record and is far from an ingratiating yes man.
February 7th, 2018 at 10:34 AM ^
always be a Michigan fan and only follow UF sports because they are close at hand. McElwain is fresh off a pretty comprehensive failure in Gainesville and was the butt of a lot of jokes toward the end. Among his f-ups was really poor player management; he is a thoroughly unconvincing public presence. If he comes to Michigan I will wish him well.
February 7th, 2018 at 10:04 AM ^
I don't hear anyone at Michigan saying "this is the hire that puts us over the top." Why should anyone here bother to "say" or prove an irrelevant concept?
February 7th, 2018 at 11:44 AM ^
a good fix on its meaning. Sincerely, Inigo Montoya
February 7th, 2018 at 12:07 AM ^
1) if you're a good offensive coach, you should know better than to hire Nuss and
2) even if you do, you don't let him ruin your offense (if you supposedly can coach a good offense maybe you should make sure you do the good plays and not the bad ones that he does).
February 6th, 2018 at 7:49 PM ^
but I'd take him as an offensive coordinator in a heartbeat.
February 6th, 2018 at 7:51 PM ^
The guy is good at two things:
a) offense coordination
b) shark humping
If Harbaugh can limit item a), we're good.

February 7th, 2018 at 9:58 AM ^
He made the cardinal mistake, two actually. He hired Doug Nussmeier and then let Nussmeier sink or swim at being the OC. In those regards he's a crappy HC. Good thing he wasn't hired to be Michigan's HC.
