To my Indian father, it's been a long time since I've heard him laugh that boisterously.

AFAIK, Gant isn't a GA. He's an intern.

No need to knock the guy. He's a former player that was hired as an intern or defensive/special teams assistant. He can learn to be a better coach under some very qualified coaches, while also using his own experience to connect with current/future players.

Sounds like Gant counts toward the 10 but Roundtree will not.
Edit- Per Dr. Mantis Tobogan and his magnum dong, Gant will not count towards the 10.

Do GAs count against coaching numbers? Like, can you have unlimited GAs?
February 4th, 2018 at 3:39 PM ^
February 4th, 2018 at 4:08 PM ^
Nope. You can only have 4 graduate assistants. Graduate assistants can "coach" on the field. Interns (such as Gant) cannot.
February 4th, 2018 at 4:17 PM ^
It's interesting that the NCAA regulates GAs but not non-graduate analysts.
February 4th, 2018 at 4:38 PM ^
not the film room.
You want to have 50 guys analyzing and breaking down film. Fine. But only the header, 10 coaches, and 4 GAs can be on the field / running meetings with the players.

Ah, somehow I missed the detail that GAs (but *not* non-grad analysts) are welcome on the field during practice. I thought neither was welcome on the practice field but both were welcome on the game field, but perhaps on a limited basis, in terms of what actions they can execute during a game.

I don't care about the points aspect of the neg, but if you are negging because you recognize that I am wrong while at the same time you have the correct information that I do not, please...you know...share it.
I shared my best explanation for what I've seen and never had any illusions that I was an expert. So if you know better, teach better. That's a superior habit for the community.

I'm totally cool with any GA hire who is an alum. Just because a player wasn't great doesn't mean he can't be a great coach. There are many good coaches who were not that good as players. Welcome back, Allen Gant!

In the Mlive article the OP linked to in the original thread on the Gant hiring they stated he was coming in a "coaching role" and that the U confirmed it to them. They included Gant's tweet in which he self identified as an assistant coach, as quoted in the headline of the original thread here. Then they updated the article to mention that 247 reported a while ago that he would be hired as an intern.
It certainly wouldn't make any sense to hire him as a real coach, but then a lot of things haven't made sense, that we've seen and that haven't been made public.

At a press conference this week, Bill Belichick was asked what the scouting report on himself (the player at D3 Wesleyan) would have been: "You've got a long way to go. Maybe you should try coaching." There is absolutely nothing to suggest that Gant was not an exceptionally smart football player. Not everyone has the physical gifts to excel at the P5 level. Glad to have him on the team, again.

It's probably a pretty good way to get started in coaching. The next step might be to become a GA, where he would actually get to coach players on the field.

It's truly incredible how despite the past year and half of board threads, some people still just trust OPs to an absolute degree even when the thread title and post content is total dogshit.
I'm to the point where I just assume every board title and post content is total nonsense until demonstrated otherwise.

Harbaugh see's potential in Gant as a coach and recruiter. Why not give him a chance as an intern. I hope Allen can start a successful coaching career.
