There is absolutely something sweet about seeing justice delivered to those who deserve it and about seeing those who enabled wrongs to be committed no longer in positions to do so
January 26th, 2018 at 11:24 PM ^
It seems many of you just want a public hanging to ogle at. The big picture of systemic ignorance toward sexual assualt across many major universities is an after thought. It's much easier to focus your attention on getting the bad guy than addressing why all these bad guys keep popping up.
January 26th, 2018 at 11:26 PM ^
I would argue you need to get the bad guy before you prevent any more bad guys from poping up but you do obviously need to follow through with the 2nd part of that once you have the bad guy
January 26th, 2018 at 11:30 PM ^
You don't need to do anything. The judicial system will take care of who is the bad guy. If you want to do anything worthwhile, rather than sharpening your pitchfork over MSU personalities you don't like, consider why does this sort of thing keep happening. You think this is isolated to MSU? You think Tom Izzo and Mark Dantonio are just especially evil coaches? Good grief. I wish I lived in that reality.
January 26th, 2018 at 11:40 PM ^
The judicial system failed to "take care of who the bad guy is" at MSU for over twenty years until someone else decided to do something. In fact, it sounds like the judicial system may have been complicit in covering up who the bad guys were in the process. No one is said this only happens at MSU and no one said it only needs to be dealt with at MSU. Nothing you said changes the fact that you need to bring the bad guys to justice before you can start preventing them, whether at MSU or everywhere else
January 26th, 2018 at 11:42 PM ^
No the judicial system was not properly involved and now it is. Also quit upvoting yourself. It's embarrassing.
January 27th, 2018 at 12:00 AM ^
The judicial system alllowed an MSU basketball assistant to plead down to a littering charge from assault and battery despite the physical evidence, victim and witness testimony. They also decided not to press charges on Appling and Payne despite victim testimony and Payne saying he thought she would feel that she was not free to leave. That sounds complicit to me

(power, money, status) aspects to be addressed.and acknowledged
On a side note, I was really irritated by Jay Bilas' remarks in which he only remained in the realm of the general ("policy") while refusing to deal with the specific. IMO, he's circling the wagons around Tom Izzo to the best of his ability.
As to the general, I think nothing would get others attention like Izzo and/or Dantonio not being able to remain at MSU. You know, real ccnsequences at the heart of the forces that led to the tramplings of the victims.

No one is sticking up for Izzo and Dantonio. Why do you feel the need to say something so disingenuous? I'm simply saying, all you guys can think about is whether X coach resigns. You're getting caught up looking at the trees when you're stuck in a giant forest. The stuff happening here is the stuff happening all over our country. But I guess people don't want to try to address that because it's too abstract? Or I don't know. Just wait for the next school then get your pitchforks out and take glee in their burning while not doing a goddamn thing productive.

Imma type this in computer code
IF(bad thing not happen), Then (glad)
IF(bad thing happen), then (A: mad, but B. if justice served, happy that at least that happened. Still sad that bad thing happened.)
That if clause was gonna get too complicated. Sorry to all the programmers out there; wanted to make it legible for normal people.

This could be a misperception on my part, but the public image of JoePa before the Sandusky mess was that he was an upstanding guy and was a good mentor for young (college) men. I'm sure there were isolated incidents at PSU, but I haven't really heard of other cover-ups there. Other than Sandusky, which was huge, there didn't seem to be a culture of sexual assault and cover up, like at Baylor, or Tennessee, and potentially now MSU. It possible they covered up other stuff, but I've never seen any press on it. (I'm not defending PSU. Just weighing in on the concept of "worst.")
January 27th, 2018 at 3:44 PM ^
is such a lame comment. Here is a piece of the OTL article that really got me pissed.. It's a reference to the US Dept of Education Office of Civil Rights Report. Does this happen everywhere?
'The report states students told investigators that Michigan State athletes "have a reputation for engaging in sexual harassment and sexual assault and not being punished for it, because athletes are held in such high regard at the university." It also states that athletes received more training on sexual harassment and sexual assault than other students but noted possible mixed messages. It cites a program called "Branded a Spartan" about upholding the Spartan name. Some male athletes told investigators that "making a report about sexual assault might tarnish the Spartan brand," and at least one said he might not report an incident involving a fellow athlete to the Title IX office, according to the report.'

As I was watching Izzo ramble on I was getting more pissed off as he continued trying to either deflect or explain things except there was no explanation, he pretty much was pleading the 5th.
He kept saying how he was for the survivors, blah, blah, blah.
How about saying he obviously did something wrong in how he handled the rape accusations and that he will do whatever necessary to combat the problems instead of giving us a bunch of BS.
I predict that Izzo and Dantonio will not survive this and they will be either fired or forced to resign.

You might be right, if Jim Tressel got run out of C-bus for covering up a tattoos for players gear swap - what chance do these guys have?
January 27th, 2018 at 10:32 AM ^
Unfortunately winning trumps all with many fans Jim Tressel was also brought back and honored before our football game there a few years ago. I said it several years ago about Penn State that if this happened at Michigan I would no longer be a fan I don't believe in the winning at all costs mentality. And I believe it today if Izzo and dantonio are found to have been hiding sexual assaults than as a Michigan State fan which I am not I would no longer be a fan. Unfortunately the beneficiary of all of this is Tennessee and Baylor who will now be in the back of people's minds

like super nerdy stuff that I'm into (Magic: The Gathering, Pokemon, board games), there is a term "opportunity cheats." So, you've got the cheater who will deliberately attempt to gain competitive advantage by hiding cards up their sleeve or game pieces under their leg. Obviously, everyone recognizes that person as a cheater.
Opportunity cheats are when you maybe didn't plan on something outside the rules going your way, but you still let it happen. In a card game, that's like accidentally drawing 2 cards instead of one, but my opponent didn't notice, so I'll just keep the second card.
For these nerd games at professional levels (yep, there is aspirational play here too), opportunity cheaters are dealt with the same as the premeditated ones. Bans, suspensions, etc. At the very best, Izzo and Dantanio are opportunity cheaters. They obviously knew the system they were directly involved with was faulty, but they didn't do a damn thing to change it.

Dantonio also brought that piece of shit Auston Robertson (or whatever his name was) who had a record of sexual assault to go along with his gawdy starz coming out of high school. Many schools wanted nothing to do with him, but MSU did. The dude then raped a girl at Michigan State. How would you feel about the beloved Coach D if that was your daughter? Dantonio has had success, yes, and from the beginning he cultivated a culture of chip on your shoulder, particularly as regards the whole program's obsessive animus--Michigan. So much so that our own coach had to tell him to shut the fuck up about us. He said "we're tougher," and produced some guys who seemed to develop a nasty strain of 'roid rage. His defensive coordinator once famously proclaimed that "we try for unneccesary roughness on every play." This was a thug culture, and there have been numerous stories of his players running around campus as though they were pillaging it. And the fact that so many guys were abusing girls and being put right back on the field is further damning. Dantonio did the dirty job they desperately wanted him to do, and he did it well. Fuck him.
