Well, this class looks like it will put this staff's player development to the test.

Weak school, Columbus, worse DL coaching, trashy ohio mouthbreathers...there are many reasons.

He is a sobering stat: OSU's average win total over the decade is around 11 games per season. Meanwhile, UM has had only one season in the past decade to even reach 11 wins.
OSU has failed to win double digit games only once in the past 10 years. UM has only 3 seasons in double digit wins during the same time.

Threads like this are getting me there. A lot of M fans are completely delusional. I have successfully detached from the Lions, but it took a very long time. Never thought it would happen with Michigan football.
January 10th, 2018 at 2:11 PM ^
You can still be emotionally invested and have a reasonable stats based take. Emotion doesn't mean the ability to look past ones faults. Idk. We aren't a National Power anymore and haven't been in 10 years, probably closer to 15. We aren't even a regional power at this time. MSU football is in a better place than Michigan. Michigan has the ability to be OSU, but has to put it together and I believe Harbaugh is building us back towards that.

Haha great point. I've been there and still go there 0.1% of the time.

You're not sure why any recruit would go to OSU?
How much time you got?
Playing for one of the best coaches in the college game, competing for national titles every single year, probably guaranteed at least one playoff appearance while you're there, dominating your rivals every year along with the whole conference, a miles-long track record of sending kids to the NFL every year, a huge fanbase that treats you like a god the minute you set foot on campus, some of the best resources of any program in America, and a decent education to go along with it.
Then you got Michigan, a team that is projected to be no better than 4th in its own division next year, and if it's offense doesn't improve could legitimately go 6-6 (Nebraska, PSU, Wisconsin, ND, MSU, and OSU are all, right now, no better than toss-ups). If I'm neutral, I could think of a ton of reasons as to why I would go to OSU before Michigan. I don't give a shit about the tradition, as the only real tradition I can see is losing to OSU. OSU is also a good school in its own right. May not be Michigan, but it's still a good school that can get you a great job even if football doesn't pan out. So whatever perks Michigan has isn't anything OSU can't offer.
January 10th, 2018 at 2:32 PM ^
that's hilarious. It's not in any way, shape, or form like Michigan. OSU is like an outdoor strip center on it's nicest day, with food choices and shops as discerning. And its selectivity with regard to academic criteria of entering students ends where Michigan's begins. I'm embarassed to even draw a comparison. TheOState provides entry to another 40% of it's class through the side door, Sophomore year, for sake of window dressing the entering Freshman statistics-- which still pale next to Michigan's. Otherwise, on a materialized level, OSU graduates are looking up at Michigan's earning +40% more $$ on average six years past graduation. That's the Michigan difference. And as our coach has made clear, football is fleeting but an education lasts forever. Here's to the recruits who appreciate the difference!

This would be important if you were recruiting participants in a quiz bowl. We are talking about athletes-specifically football players. The michigan difference really shows in the NFL. Michigan puts approximately 15% of the players in the league compared to Ohio State. And if you think mighty michigan has the same admission requirments for football as the rest of the student population, you are sadly mistaken.

Greg Mattison?
Mattison is a great coach and recruiter and I will take him over Larry Johnson all day, every day.
January 10th, 2018 at 1:21 PM ^
Disagree. I would trade Mattison for Johnson in a heart beat and apparently so would most elite high school d-lineman.

Greg Mattison is still one of the very best DL coaches in all of football. Larry Johnson cannot say that.
January 10th, 2018 at 3:19 PM ^
I'm genuinely curious: Why can't Johnson say that?!?! His DLs have been amazing, and check out who he has sent to the league.
Saying he's good - if not great - is not a slight against Mattison. They can both be great; and, IMO, they are both great.

Look at the DL he coached and put into the NFL:
Taco, Mike Martin, Frank Clark, Ryan Glasgow, Matt Godin, Willie Henry, Chris Wormly. He had four guys at Florida get drafted from 2005-2007. Mo Hurst is a bonafide 1st rounder. Gary and Winovich are NFLers. Think of the Rich Rod dudes he turned into good/great college DL .
Mattison can coach DL on par with anyone in the country. And he has a hell of an eye for talent. Secondary recruiter on Gary/Peppers/Butt/Hurst. Primary recruiter for Tim Tebow/Bredeson/Dymonte Thomas/Ben Gedeon/De'Veon Smith/Channing Stribling and a bunch more dudes with NFL ceilings
January 10th, 2018 at 2:12 PM ^
This. It sucks for the class, but the DL will be ok. Not just ok. Great.
We need a freaking OL, stat.
OL will get us DL recruits, because if we don't start winning some important freaking games, we won't be able to recruit at ANY position.
January 10th, 2018 at 2:52 PM ^
Mattison is a great coach... but so is Larry Johnson.
Look at the DL he coached and put into the NFL: Brad Scioli Courtney Brown(#1 pick) Jimmy Kennedy (1st rd) Michael Haynes (1st rd) Anthony Adams Tamba Hali (1st rd) Jay Alford Aaron Maybin (1st rd) Jared Odrick (1st rd) Devon Still Jack Crawford Jordan Hill DaQuan Jones Michael Bennett Joey Bosa (1st rd) Adolphus Washington

Urban was a great coach. Only one of his titles is in the last 10 years. He looks like he is running on fumes. If he doesn’t develop an elite quarterback right away, there will be a big falloff next year.
January 10th, 2018 at 2:03 PM ^
So they will only win the Big Ten title by a fg? That type of drop off. Or will they only beat us by a fg drop off?
