Cade would actually be fine…

Cade would actually be fine committing himself to his Michigan degree and everything else the place represents. Could never imagine him leaving for sake of just having the chance to play more football. Don't think this is the only thing that defines him as shown through how he handles himself and his connection to the program and the student body.

Bravo indeed!  Now if only…

Bravo indeed!  Now if only our University's marketing department/ administration had even a smidgen of vision to show off our brilliant school during the half-time ad they've been running all season.  I have no idea who they're talking to, or what they're selling.  Michigan is not a community college with local outreach as its dominant mission, and most M students do not look like sagging 40-year-olds. Such a wasted opportunity with every national broadcast, just embarrassing. And does nothing to inspire alumni to "gift" to the school.

I get the sour grapes…

I get the sour grapes sensation of this board every time a recruitment goes awry, but let's not pretend academic prestige is Michigan's problem or that we do not make major concessions to accomodate the transcripts from many of the upper echelon players. Even the Ivy League does it with every player they bring in w/ a 23 ACT requiring 3 others w/ a 32...when the avg for the institution is a 34 or 1520 SAT.  Our prestige should only be viewed as an advantage, much as we contort Stanford when they beat us on a player.  For what can be more useful to a student-athlete than to develop a network "after football" of hyper-competitive people who want to help you succeed.

Holy F.  Dude has great feet…

Holy F.  Dude has great feet and twitch, regardless of the competition, and moves like someone 100 lbs lighter. Going to be a beast!

It's laughable to consider…

It's laughable to consider Michigan a "state" school or to argue how your tax dollars offset what you would otherwise pay.  When state funds only cover about 5% of the University's budget, you have to appreciate how much of the load is being borne by the Out-Of-State (OOS), and the International student body (which has taken a hit during Covid).  The in-state student body has a lot to be thankful for, not least of which is the OSS and International contingencies that disproportionately support the quality of the institution.  The bill currently stands at $60K/year for non-residents (not including room + board) with residents paying $20K.   This type of differential does not seem justified, nor does the notion of "state" school when the State of Michigan is not supporting the differential in tuition rates.

So much hostility. Let's…

So much hostility. Let's consider that few (none) of us know the facts. Besides, it's not an extremely high bar for athletes to gain admission. So if the transcript was actually the problem, does it really make much sense to subject that person to a classroom (or ridiculous remote setting) if they're not able to keep up? Thankfully, the university's mission is much bigger than football.

Meaningless practice game…

Meaningless practice game that doesn't have to be meaningless. Moreover, what would be the problem with presenting your vaccination card for sake of entry to the stadium?  While others may still wish to just view on TV. The level of excitement for Michigan football is nearing an all-time nadir. Would seem appropriate to put on some kind of fan engaging experience that also allowed players to showcase a bit of their own excitement for what's happening in the program.

Seems odd to make negative…

Seems odd to make negative remarks about a place unless one has visited, has unique insight, and/or has known closely a few who've attended the school.  And then make it material, not just half baked conjecture.  I've had alot of fun on my trips to Penn State, loved the Phyrst, thought the campus had plenty of tradition and beauty (Old Main), and found the people respectful of rivalries and generally tasteful.  Nearly the opposite of a trip to OSU where some old redneck wants to kick your ass in the latrine should they see a navy and maize striped scarf around your neck.  And these are not just game day observations.

Sounds like she also…

Sounds like she also inherited the family smarts on marketing of their product.  Coors used to be something cool and desirable, too, when it was only available in certain parts of the country.  Not every brand or product should try to be the GAP or McDonald's.

a 2-6 season (because that's…

a 2-6 season (because that's what it really was) resulting in a re-hired coach is what is miserable.  There have been so many apologists on this board for JH, along with a whole host of rash takes. Regardless, in real life when any of us go 2-6 as executives in our own businesses, we typically need to find new work, or should.  If what we're producing is the same salami everyone else is making, except that after 6 years we're now making it worse than our competitors who have inferior salami machines-- something is seriously wrong w/ the ingredients.

Have to begin with…

Have to begin with effectively recruiting your own backyard and neighbor's yard which has 3x the talent pool of Michigan. OSU has always begun by dominating their state and expanding outward--just look at 247 state recruiting for the classes of '21 and '22.  So yeah, the perception might be that they've turned their back on Ohio, but only to the extent that the talent from elsewhere is better than the other 6-15 from within Ohio in a given year.   We're not recruiting this well locally and it might make sense to plant our flag somewhere as a starting point.  We have a lot to sell as an institution, should be doing far better than we are-- unless the interface that parents and recruits are having with representing football personnel is inferior to what they experience at an OSU.  Maybe we need better salesmen?   Can say what you want to about Urban Meyer, but "great salesman" is what stands out above all else, and that awareness has only been passed on to the staff there now.

Imagine if all families had…

Imagine if all families had the independence to find their own health care coverage and employers were not involved at all.  That we all worked as independent contractors or behaved as if we were self-employed.  More might have an entirely different view of the ACA/ Obama Care, or about the value of having quality access to good health care across an entire spectrum of incomes.

We need someone who can…

We need someone who can appreciate what Michigan represents as an academic institution, but who at the same time has a standard for excellence on the football field.  And that's not just passion to play or knowing a history.  It's about the DETAILS and coaching those details in every aspect of a program.  This is not unlike running a corporation with many moving parts.  Most football coaches would never make good CEO's, yet alone good product managers or people with vision for taking that product forward in a competitive market. But the types that would are the one's we should be after.

Half the coaches mentioned here would be Rich Rod types who didn't realize the student body at Michigan had a higher math SAT score than the combined at WVa (ok I've exaggerated, but you get the point).  There's so much to sell here between the outstanding academic body and the town of Ann Arbor.  Failure can't be acceptable.  And when you've got regression after 6 years, it's clear we're not hitting standards and no one is holding accountability for hitting on the details-- whether that's scouting, recruiting, building talent, or teaching.  There's too much excellence to sell for football to not be good.

If anyone remembers year 1 of Urban Meyer at Ohio State and the coverage of the story on BTN, it's worth digging-up to watch. It outlines how he broke down and attacked every aspect of the program and developed accountability at every level. It was painful to their culture at the time, but seems to have worked.

What's elite about Michigan…

What's elite about Michigan football is the facilities. We once pined away about how we'd be relevant again as soon as the administration stepped-up in the arms race. Sadly we've likely outspent schools like MSU (between staffing and facilities) by a magnitude of 4 or 5. Corporations run like this would be jettisoned by investors.

We clearly lack a technocrat at the top of our football program and desperately need one.

False, the Sears/ Director's…

False, the Sears/ Director's Cup relates to a school's best performing sports, or best 10 women's and 10 best men's.  So it's unlikely that a school like Stanford would remove something that they have a tradition of excellence in competing or that would not enable them to continue to win this trophy.

Not a big deal, just a big…

Not a big deal, just a big deal for those who used these sports as "entry" to the institution.  It's not a scholarship cost thing, it's the cost of the coaches, travel, use of facilities, and administration.  Major bummer to the gifted athlete w/ the 29 ACT who used field hockey as her ticket to such a school.  Such schools have approximately 6 golden tickets to extend each season in their respective sport, which rarely involve scholarship money, aside from what financial aid a student may already qualify.

$300 is a lot, or $17K/year?…

$300 is a lot, or $17K/year?  Keep in perspective that no one has to attend U of M, it's a choice and there's plenty of competing options out there.  It's also a life choice, not a matter of something you can price compare on first review, but an accumulation of experiences and interactions that serve some quite well.  Moreover, for the level of study and quality of exposure that a student can have at UofM relative to other thriftier campuses who may not have an nuclear reactor or equivalent wind tunnel or sub-atomic microscope, or pulitzer prize poet,... nicer things cost more money.  And sadly, the "state" part of our university has done little to sustain the quality of our school.

Terrible optics, especially…

Terrible optics, especially for a product that would appear to be LESS than optimal. But the 1.9% increase only translates to $300 increase/year for Michigan residents ($17K/year tuition) vs. $1,000/year for non-residents ($55K/year).  That's not likely a hardship for the family who is actually paying full tuition in the first place, since family incomes under $120K/year are already getting assistance, or a full ride.  And if you're a Michigan resident, stop your bitching. The disparity to the OOS rate is appalling and has served to swell the coffers for the very lackluster contribution from the state (which once was the justification for having an out of state rate).  Some of this increase can also be attributed to the drop in International Student attendance which also pays at full OOS tuition rates. So the next time some xenophobic a-hole looks to disparage the high % of international students at their respective institution, consider the financial contributions coming from these cultures and maybe say "thank you."

Bill Paxton was so good in this role.

UA was most relevant (and…

UA was most relevant (and competitive) in their early going when their focus and invention was largely the synthetic t-shirt-- the must wear item of any grade school to collegiate football player to wear under the shoulder pads. Hence the name "under armour".  Once they began their march to become another Nike, ala footwear and every other element, along w/ sponsorships, it was clear they never had the leadership or design acumen to be anything other than the Walmart version.  And being the Walmart version of anything can be precarious space for a brand, at best.

All I can say is thank goodness Michigan is again a Nike school.  Although I'd personally like to see much more of the 1st rate "Nike" prototype product and less of the Air J.   And would be even better if Nike would put into the Michigan offering some re-makes of vintage Nike, ala Blue Ribbon Sports archives.

McCaffrey by a mile. Not…

McCaffrey by a mile. Not much tape needs to be watched to get to this point. McCaffrey often looked more competent and certainly with a higher ceiling than Patterson last year, except for getting blow-up at Wisconsin by the headhunting.  Milton has some nice gifts, but a strong arm is rarely a necessity for winning games.  Think any one of us would chose a QB with anticipation (knowing playbook + defensive alignments pre-call) w/ the ability to throw guys open vs. anything else.  The fact that McCaffrey can also run like a deer does not hurt, although hope to see less risk taken in a starter's role.

The Don Brown's should…

The Don Brown's should likely wear an N95 mask and a shield in all social engagements, particularly in team settings with young people.  It's not unlike seeing how most Asian cultures have dealt with past pandemics, and continued life largely uninterrupted.  Movie theaters never shut down during any of the Covid outbreak in S.Korea or elsewhere. They simply understand the small sacrifice required (wearing masks) to mutually survive and bring the virus to an end.

There will be new and more…

There will be new and more awful stories.  $50K just becomes the new floor that quickly becomes "not enough".  Who on this board does not think they're worth more than their current earnings?  An NCAA that begins to open up 3rd party payments may cease to be the quality of college sport that make it our preference to Pro.

There was wisdom behind the University of Chicago's departure from D1 nearly 80 years ago. Let's not confuse amateurism with that of professionalism.  The better solution to all of this is to allow 18 year olds direct admission to the professional ranks.  And the NFL (the wealthiest of all sports leagues) needs to become as modern as the other sports, if only to create their version of the new G-league.

Exactly. This whole…

Exactly. This whole discussion is so tired.  CBB will be as good or better with the 1 and dones removed. And wish the same for football.  Never have we watched because we had a superior product, Michigan football a prime example. We can lose every Ohio St game from here to eternity, yet we will still watch.  We are "fans" and there is nothing rational about being one, particularly when it's your alma mater or a team you grew up rooting for.

Fans suck for giving high…

Fans suck for giving high school athletes this much interest.  If COVID-19 was good for one thing, it might be for sake of placing sports into proper perspective.

In the case of this particular recruiting class, of what difference for 1+dones with an interrupted or non-existent season.  And regardless, move along.

One thing is for certain, the University of Michigan will remain a vital institution regardless of what transpires in the world of D1 athletics.

Sounds well considered to…

Sounds well considered to have a child pay their way, if only minimum wage (not to mention 1st 5 years of post school employment) correlated more closely to the cost of attending 30 years ago.  This is also why 4 year college is not the right choice for all applicants, certainly not from OOS, and likely why universities need to take a hard look at whether to buy that new electron accelerator-- although they will because there are enough of us who find it essential.  There are less privileged students where the bet is right to make because they're brilliant and will make the most of the resources.  But the opposite is also true.

To give your child some skin in the game and take on a % of the bill or elements, that sounds more like what we'd all like to encourage, regardless of where our kids go.

Let's just play a team that…

Let's just play a team that ours can get excited about.  And if we lose, so what,... we still have a better anthropology and b-school, and every other academic department known to man.  After all, this is "collegiate" athletics, not pro, and failure to recognize it for that can lead to misery.

One look at NFL CB's having…

One look at NFL CB's having success (sticking in the league) makes you realize that recruiting stars out of HS is not everything.  Some even went to Rutgers.

BTN is a big part of why…

BTN is a big part of why salaries can be where they are, including non-revenue sports.  And why not let economics determine seat prices,... no one is making anyone go to watch this product.  Let your vote be cast by not buying tickets.  Besides, the tailgate is always the best part of the game.

Football is a DETAILS game. …

Football is a DETAILS game.  When a Michigan head coach comes to a press conference after mind blowingly middling wins over Middle Tennessee State and Army and appears pleased with his team's overall performance, something is very not right.  Either the team's and/or asst.coach's psyches are that fragile or that coach does not know how to achieve execution from the components at hand.  And neither are tolerable at this level.

I went to Michigan with Harbaugh, knew back then that he was the same odd duck that we all see today.  I find his philosophy and quirks to be embracing of everything graduates expect and respect about Michigan, so I dig that he runs against the grain.  But, for anyone to ride so high on his horse through summer camp and Big 10 media meetings and acknowledge that his team should be considered the favorites to win the league,.. how can you coach ball this long and not see how seriously flawed your team is?  Or to not be able to breakdown what it takes to be successful in just 10 well executed plays of offense?  And the defense, wow, film study would be brutal if they do any.  Watching Wisconsin line-up with 2 additional offensive linemen in the backfield and w/ Jordan Glasgow serving as DT over their guard, mind boggling.  Just forfeit and wave the flag.  The bigger head scratcher is that Glasgow was doing the same thing against Army for the same effect.  What's up Don Brown?  Maybe we now know why Greg Mattison left for Columbus.

Our facilities are likely #1 in the nation when you combine the athletic with the academic.  Is this as much a problem with our AD?  And is he just along for the ride, until it ends?  What happened to the best and the brightest.

As a 22 year old sophomore,…

As a 22 year old sophomore, the potential should (needs to) show soon.

Free market.  Let's hope he…

Free market.  Let's hope he's terrific and we need to pay him more to try to hold him-- best scenario.  Alternatively, if we see no improvement, let's hope we can move-on quickly and turn the page without any financial peril.

This whole concept of buyout clause seems ridiculous if a guy wants to go, although there should similarly be no safety net should the opposite transpire. These guys are climbing the same corporate ladders as most of us and developing people behind them (if they're good) and should face the same chopping block if ineffective, or similarly be in position to be plucked by a more interested or glamorous suitor should they make it rain.

Most Michigan grads are…

Most Michigan grads are going to be driven to compete at the highest level and with companies that recruit the best talent.  Where you do it is less important than the actual doing.  And let's face it, NYC is a whole lot more palatable with regard to spacial compromises and limited disposable income when you're 23 than when you're 33.   Best opportunities and new experiences should be every Michigan graduate's calling, not to mention every parent's.

Almost like talking on his…

Almost like talking on his cell to management thanking them for the selection.  A good omen.

Rogers likely wants to see and be enticed by areas unfamiliar,.. that, or he just loves the South, which is unimaginably hot during summer training.  As long as he holds Michigan in this group we'll have the chance to show him just how special things are from his own backyard.  When you start to enter objective pros + cons and walk these university settings side x side while also engaging the PEOPLE who comprise the character of these schools (including football),.. there is no comparison.  Some of these other schools can show you clean new dorms and glad handing staff, but that's never what we take away in the end.

Why grown men get worked-up…

Why grown men get worked-up about 10th grade QB's finding their way to full-time rides is as upsetting as any perceived mistreatment.  Totally agree w/ Alumnus93, it all goes both ways and should,.. and the parents and HS coaches should not be oblivious to this.  You have to just keep performing.

Shit happens for a reason, not unlike kids applying their book smarts for possible academic rides or top tier schools. They don't always get what they want or what they might deserve.  There might actually be someone smarter or who in the end checked more boxes who gets the spot.  It's a long road and it's misguided and naive to have any other perspective.  I mean crap, enough have sat in specialized recruiting/performance camps since their kids were 10 years of age to see and be told how it works.

Never a need to attack the…

Never a need to attack the poster.  Anyone can and will discard such senseless commentary (likely coming from a guy living in his mom's basement who has no distinguishing attributes).

Outstanding for Gentry!  The dude came in as a marginal 4 star QB and re-shaped himself into a top 150 NFL draft pick, along with a UM degree, someone who will well represent our school.

Love it, I'm similarly…

Love it, I'm similarly snarky with friends (many of whom are Buckeye fans) in that whenever we pass an Applebee's I yell "O-H".  Doesn't matter if it's in Akron or Times Square, you'll invariably get an "I-O" shouted right back.  Likely works to equal effect at B-dubs or Olive Garden.

All the premises you launch…

All the premises you launch from being false, there's no discussion to be had. The credit you provide for the current economy was a trend that started 9 years ago.  And there is no current "administration", the notion of that is very funny.

The spring game has ever…

The spring game has ever been a big deal in Ann Arbor, even with the tickets being free.  And, I think it has little to do with the win % against OSU.  Columbus has a metropolitan population in excess of 2.0 mil and the Buckeyes are the pro franchise of the state.  Their spring game is a cheap means for median families to see the favorite team.  Moreover, all allegiances in the state of Ohio are for OSU, does not matter if you went to OU, Cincinnati, Akron, Miami, Bowling Green,.. they are all Buckeyes.   Do Ferris State or Western Michigan grads root for Michigan, or graduates of any other Michigan school?  I think there is NO comparison.  Michigan is not the school for "everyman" and thank goodness it is not OSU.

It's a great drill, throwing…

It's a great drill, throwing across the body at a moving target,.. exactly what they're taught not to do.  Of course in wild scramble, it's essential to be able to make such pooch plays.

Not unlike HS football…

Not unlike HS football players looking only at SEC schools because of perceived higher competition, I believe the ACC has been a frequent destination for McDonald's All-Americans for the same reason.  Having a Big 10 that would seem on par with with the ACC, or better, can only lift programs like Michigan on the recruiting scene, where we've been able to become an elite program while rarely hitting on top 50 talent, yet alone top 10.

It's insane and so…

It's insane and so completely unethical what some families will do to attain the right status by getting their kids into the most selective schools.

The word "accommodation" immediately comes to mind which is the other means by which some more privileged families provide advantages for admission to their kids.  Getting an extra +50% of exam time for all of your high school testing in addition to SAT/ ACT examinations is VERY meaningful, and the institutions are blind to the students being accommodated by such advantages. You can bet that the % of accommodations is highly correlated to income which makes it all the harder for kids of lesser circumstances to get into schools.

Coach Nielsen is a winner,…

Coach Nielsen is a winner, huge success as a player at Northwestern (4 time Nat.Champ, 2 time Tewaaraton), clearly knows exactly what it takes.  She was a huge get by the athletic department and will likely take this program to the top, unless she departs for a bigger job.

Awesome!  These look better…

Awesome!  These look better than the originals, primarily due to the trimmer fit of the jersey which modern synthetics allow.   The shorts definitely look better with the jersey un-tucked as presented by Iggy.  The side panels of the shorts are just so heavy handed with less being more when the jersey is untucked.

And frankly, not sure why anyone wants to wear longer basketball shorts anymore, just looks sad and very dated.  Again, Iggy has it right, especially since they still look relaxed and unrestricted.

No expectation should be…

No expectation should be held.  Deferment typically amounts to a very long "NO".  And aboslutely don't take it personal.  Most of the applicants getting rejected have outstanding scores and qualifications, many of whom will look the same to evaluators,...4.0 unweighted, 1600, 36, President of Class.  Hence, unless your daughter has truly done something abundantly different, having taught Syrian refugee children how to swim, or started her own organic dairy farm, or found a means to biodegrade plastics,... don't be too optimistic.   Everyone applying to these schools is exceptional, and some of them will have the opportunity to go to Michigan.

Seems like a great guy,…

Seems like a great guy, great teammate and will be an asset to whatever program/school lands him, regardless of whether he contributes on the field.  Harrison seems to have "more than just football" in his grounding which is likely what gave Michigan the chance that it's had.

The size should vary to the…

The size should vary to the extent of how many students buy season tickets.  It’s one of the privileges students should always retain given the cost of tuition— $65K in the case of the half that attends from out of state.  And at many such selective schools game fees are included in tuition and always guaranteed.

The only change that should be considered would be to void the need for student ID for sake of using such tickets. But I wish to believe that this came about because many of us got tired of having ugly non-Michigan students complaining in our sections over not respecting assigned seats.

If you paid for your ticket,…

If you paid for your ticket, you can do whatever you want to do with it.  And missing games now is not that different from 30 years ago as a student in Michigan stadium. The viewing largely sucks and, combined with ceaseless TV breaks, the experience is hardly exceptional. Missing a few lame games in favor of staying longer at the tailgate— I’d pick tailgate every time.

Hail Caesar!   Why anyone…

Hail Caesar!   Why anyone takes the slant to attack the poster has always seemed low-end to me and juvenile.  Write to support your own informed opinions, or move along.  Because otherwise, you're just creating filler and a speed bump for anyone reading.

Having had the chance to…

Having had the chance to tour many schools with my kids along with professional recruiting, how UVA, Yale, Princeton, University of Washington, (or even little Williams) do not make the top 25-- stunning.    Sort of disqualifies Niche's findings in my opinion.
