OT- Sparty geek Graham Couch only voter to leave undefeated TCU out of top 25
December 26th, 2017 at 5:57 PM ^
If it's not an oversight, then Graham Couch is dumber than we previously imagined. While KenPom has TCU 26th, the AP and Coaches polls have the Horned Frogs 10th and 8th respectively.

their neutral site win against Nevada?
With them ranked #26 on kenpom, I could see making an argument for them not being in the top 25 (because you can point to the poor metrics and easy schedule), but to have Nevada, which they beat on a neutral floor and which has worse metrics, ranked ahead of them is ridiculous.

"He also thinks MLK Day is an excuse to take a day off."

He said kids should be at school learning about MLK and adults "behave like 4th graders & take off MLK Day." I guess the adults should be at work learning about MLK as well. Funny thing is I don't hear him saying this about Columbus Day or Presidents Day. Also, I heard plenty about MLK in school the week before the holiday and again in February.
When backed into a corner, he defended himself by saying MLK Day is a worthy holiday, but we haven't yet earned the right to take the day off.
I'm not going to post screenshots of what he posted. If you want to find it, you can. But either way, all the man had to do was say this holiday should be a national day of service, point to the website on nationalservice.org and keep it movin. But no, he has to make an irrational #hottake because he was sad people wouldn't read his pathetic column that Monday morning.

Meh, I think MSU fans hate Couch too, actually.
December 27th, 2017 at 3:47 PM ^
They only hate him because he doesn't blow enough sunshine about MSU as they would like. They consider him to be a part of the #BLUEWALL!

Yeah, and if you burned this Couch alongisde a bit of chocolate and marshmellow, it'd be delicious!

He's also the guy who made a crack about Dizzy Dean when it looked like Peters had a concussion. He really is just a shitty columnist, and I assume he picked Nevada over TCU because he's watched about 2 non-MSU games and just started naming teams with states he recognized.

I think a lot of Spartan fans really don't care for Couch either. In addition to being generally ill-informed on issues, his brand of homerism is often too much even for the staunchest MSU apologist. At least, this is what I have observed anyway. I do agree with the general assessment though - he is quite the idiot.

It happens more than people think because these polls mean squat. Even in football, when it did matter, voters would leave teams out during the season.

If you're calling mgoblog "homerism", you need to get out more. Visit Lawrence, Kansas (about forty miles from my house). Visit Columbus, Ohio. Visit Eugene, Oregon. Mgoblog has its share of homer-bloggers (I'm right up there). But the blog as a whole is more intelligent, reasoned, and clear-spoken than you'll find almost anywhere else. Go blue.

Okay, we pretty much agree. I'm not positing that mgoblog is unbiased, but you hadn't used the terms "independent, unbiased" in your original comment. And honestly, I get more unblinking criticism of Michigan's weaknesses and more blunt (often complimentary) assessment of Michigan's foes from mgoblog than almost anywhere else on the net. I find the front page to be extremely intelligent, focused, and fair. Homers abound on the board, and more power to them! Brian and his team are serious sports journalists who have a bias, acknowledge it, and write the truth anyway.

of the pecking order. That's not where you put your best people and not where they are willing to stay.

My favorite truthful articles are when we recalculate scores based on officiating to prove that Michigan actually won. I've never seen another fan site do this and I think it needs to be commended. Other fan sites are content with saying "the better team won." It's that "never say die" attitude sans any bias that makes this place special

Newspapers going the way of the dinosaur. In Detroit, for instance, the Freep and News are already basically the same entity and they will soon merge into one online "newspaper" that will cover local government, sports, police, etc. And hopefully that thing will have some semblance of objectivity and journalistic integrity, because local government especially needs oversight from a free press. I basically get most of my local and state news from online Detroit News now, and I must say I would consider a subscription service if one was offered. Reading news online is getting so fucking annoying because of all the pop-up ads and videos that you can't locate to shut down.
