Hudson was a pretty highly ranked guy, too, and he played O-line in high school. So it's not like some walk on who passes Filiaga on the depth chart.

that Filiaga was always recruited as a guard. His profile fit guard. We'll need replacements for Bredeson and Onwenu in two years. Filiaga will be right on schedule if he takes over one of the guard spots as a RS Jr (like was is supposed to happen with OL).
And yes, you're absolutely correct that Hudson was highly rated and a prototypical OT.

Here is a hot tip. I am the 1% who is not just taking a wild ass guess. I actually know what I am talking about but what I have to say is behind a paywall so you can't access it.

Filiaga has been practicing mostly at guard.
Hudson was a highly rated recruit at DL, a little lower 4* than Filiaga. Many coaches thought his best position was OT, so you can make a good case he would have been higher rated as one.
Drevno coaches the interior line. Frey has tackles and TEs. That's a pretty even split and Drevno still outranks him. Hard to imagine he's given up control of the entire OL.
How did the coaches miss anything in scouting these players? I don't get the reasoning. Recruiting services and coaches project players to different positions frequently.. You don't think they should take both even if Hudson was a better tackle prospect?

Don't expect them all to be from the same mold though. Isaiah Wilson was a top target in the last class. If they're good enough, we'll take different body types. The last offer went to a 6', 9" 305 LB player in the 2019 class.

I'm sorry to say that until Newsome comes back we should assume that he won't be able to. It would be a huge loss, and we still have hope. But right now it looks like the likelihood is on the other side.

Who is this Brederson fellow? Is he a walk-on I've never heard of? Why do you think he'd overtake one of the hundred RT candidates that we've all heard of?
Honestly, I've seen his name spelled so many different ways it makes me think nobody here actually knows the roster! Mistakes happen, but poor damn Ben Bredeson gets his name spelled wrong more than any other player I've ever seen!!

I agree that the biggest issues on the depth chart will be on the OLine.
And while nothing would make Christmas brighter than having Grant Newsome back on the depth chart, even in a blog prediction.......I don't think he'll be there. 14 months off from the field is a really long time. I had previously seen that he was jogging, but I couldn't find the link when I went back to search for it just now. The recent Freep article about him mentioned all the classroom stuff, but didn't mention anything at all physical (which would have been much more encouraging).
Replacing Cole and finding a full time RT will be huge. There will obviously be ongoing depth issues there as well.

It would totally be worth a Victory Formation snap for him to get the standing-O...
It's not about the games he played, since he only started, what, 5 or 6 games. It's about having the courage to hang around the team, work his way back to a (more or less) normal life, and keep a great attitude after such a horrific injury. Earning a degree, on scholarship, with his teammates, would be worth a standing-O.

there are rumors that Newsome will never play again for UM due to the injury
Just rumors, so, who knows

Newsome will not play another down at UM. Career-threatening injury and a whole year without any practice. If he plays it will show that the other tackles on the team are not improving.
December 17th, 2017 at 5:21 PM ^
You may end up being right, but not because he has not practiced for a year.
He had a ultra-serious medical event. He wants to walk in the future I am sure. I would not sell him short though; you may have to eat those words.

I am surprised Grant would even want to go back to football after nearly losing his leg because of it. Not to mention the concussions, CTE, etc. He is still young and going to one of the best public colleges in the world. Grant is very bright and there are many opportunities waiting for him outside of football.

"...highly qualified..." ???
I haven't seen a single one of these internet docs diagnosing brain cancer. And all of the good medical sites are all over that. So just how qualified are these bozos?

The odds of his knee being stable enough to play are just too small. If he *IS* health enough to play, and his knee holds up, he might be able to return to form.
I suspect that Newsome at 80% is better than what we will have 1/2/2018, not because they aren't improving, but because Newsome looked like he was heading into very positive territory prior to his injury.

We currently have four freshman tackles on the roster. If Grant returns by spring practice, the freshman will have practiced for one year, while Newsome has not practiced for 1-1/2 years because of a very serious injury. Newsome was a sophomore before he got injured last year. Since Newsome will have most likely regressed since his injury, I would be surprised if our sophomore tackles are not better than Newsome, who will be coming off a major injury and will be playing in sophomore-form.

Harbaugh won't be suiting up next year at QB. We have 3 solid players, all with star potential. This is the first time in a long time. BP, SP, DM is my prediction. I believe we will see 2 of them start (due to injuries) and all 3 get playing time.

SP is a game changer
SP will start in 2018

I kind of agree with the sentiment that Hudson starts at a tackle spot, especially given Newsome's health issues.
I also think Peters starts over Patterson and McCaffery.

That, my friend, is a championship caliber line-up. I remain skeptical about Newsome though. The big question will be the O-line in general. But since they made strides this year I am hopeful. And year four is about the time when the line should come together.
