Michigan #2 So Far in Director's Cup
Michigan has scored nationally in the following sports thus far, good for 2nd place in the Director's Cup Fall standings:
Women's Cross Country 9th
Men's Cross Country 10th
Field Hockey 3rd
Men's Soccer 17th
Stanford is, as usual, in first place with national championships in both men's and women's soccer leading the way for them. They will add to their lead after a trip to the final 4 in volleyball and likely top 25 finish in football, ahead of us.
For those of you who think we can't beat OSU in anything, the current standings of other B1G schools are interesting:
2. Michigan
4. Penn State
9. Wisconsin
12. Michigan State
21. Indiana
33. Northwestern
35. Maryland
50. Minnesota
78. Rutgers
93.(tie) Purdue, Illinois
108. Ohio State (first round men's soccer appearance)
N/A Iowa, Nebraska (they are playing in the NC in volleyball as we speak)
We should score a bunch of points in the winter season with both men's and women's swimming, gymnastics, wrestling, and even women's basketball in he top 25. Again, it will be a fight for #2, and we look good to finish there.

Unfortunately, OSU will get alot more points in Hockey than we will (zero).

For football they use the final USA Today rankings. NC winner gets 100 points and down the rankings to 49 points for 25th. All non-top 25 bowl teams get either 45 points for a bowl win or 25 for a bowl loss.

While Stanford might be tough to beat, and there has been debate elsewhere on this board about Magnus’s comment that Michigan is no longer “elite” in football, this news indicates that Michigan doesn’t always have to be elite in football and men’s basketball, if it maintains very successful programs in those sports and also consistently challenges and occasionally beats Stanford for number one in the Directors Cup standings.
Frequently advancing to at the least the round of sixteen of NCAA tournaments in men’s and women’s soccer, tennis and lacrosse, men’s ice hockey, baseball and golf, women’s volleyball, field hockey, basketball and softball, and gaining top eight finishes for teams and also having more individual champions in gymnastics, wrestling, cross country, track and field, and swimming and diving seems like a nice resumé to have.
Although my only connection to the University of Michigan is through a child who’s a “Double Wolverine”, if I were a Michigan alum, I’d be impressed to know that a school with Michigan’s elite academic reputation, a school that's considered to be one of the world’s great universities, also boasts an elite athletic reputation in ALL sports.
