Will Harbaugh Change The Offense To Fit Shea Patterson's Skill Set?

how about we make a deal.
we wont criticize Peters for handing the ball off against Rutgers, Minnesota and Maryland. In return you cant praise Peters for handing the ball off against Rutgers, Minnesota and Maryland.

Considering how good Patterson appears to be (well, in his highlight films from Ole Miss), that outcome would be as good as "Stueber is reminding everyone of 2004 Jake Long."
December 8th, 2017 at 7:44 AM ^
Comparing Patterson and O'korn is not accurate. O'korn transferred because he was passed on the depth chart. Patterson was the starter at a Power 5 school that got hit with sanctions. Their talent levels aren't even close.
December 8th, 2017 at 9:26 AM ^
Not logical.
Option 1: Patterson stays at Ole Miss where he is the current starter.
Option 2: Patterson transfers to another school where he will start (UCLA for example).
Option 3: Patterson transfers to Michigan where he will be the backup.
There is no scenario where he chooses option 3 given options 1 and 2. If he chooses to go to Michigan and is eligible to play, he is going to be Michigan's starter.
Further, if Harbaugh was truly confident in Peters and/or McCaffery he would not be recruiting Patterson.

Is anyone concerned that Shea's td/int ratio was 17-9 last year? I dont know anything about the kid, but to me, that seems like too many ints....Is anyone here watched him play? Is he a high risk/high reward type?

Baker Mayfield threw 41 TD and 5 Int
Hurts threw 15 TD and 1 int
Kelly Bryant threw 6 I believe
Darnold, Falk, Grier aren’t in the playoffs
Peters threw 0 Int

Had to try and come back a lot. There defense was not good and from what I heard, many of the interceptions were because he had to force things. That will not be the case at Michigan.
I for one am looking forward to the competition between Patterson and Peters. I personally believe Patterson will perform at another level especially under Harbaugh. Funny that people would think Peters would leave as I think this will only strengthen him. He will get his chances to play and I think both players will be drafted in the first round.
Peters just needs to grow, but Patterson is at a whole other level. He will be very exciting to watch and I am sure the naysayers will be like " man I sure am glad we got that guy, I told you he was good "...............ya right.

If Peters wins the job, it may be because Harbaugh trusts him more not to make big mistakes. That's not to say he will automatically go with the safer pick, but if it's at all close I expect him to.

They went 3-5 in the SEC, not great, but not doormats. Their offense scored a lot of points in the games after Patterson went out. Patterson did face the toughest teams on their schedule though.

Neither of which are guarantees.
December 8th, 2017 at 8:05 AM ^
Thank you...can we all just relax and see how everything shakes out. From what I saw on his video he's not guaranteed to start - the tendencey to pull the ball down and run outside the pocket to then rifle a pass downfield is the exact issue we had this year.

When I step back with a level head, I think Peters still has a great chance to keep his job. I'm sure Patterson may have a somewhat higher upside with being more of a dual threat, but:
1) Peters has proven he can take care of the ball and didn't make too many mistakes in the time he had. Didn't throw one pick. Patterson looks like he's more of a gunslinger, which can pay off big sometimes, but then also bite you in the ass. Threw nine picks in seven games, and it's really 8 picks in 5 games when you get past the two body-bag games Ole Miss had to start the season. That stat by itself is very O'Korn-esque.
2) He already knows the playbook. Not saying Patterson can't learn it, but this will be Peters' third year in the system, and you have to imagine Harbaugh/Drevno would loosen the leash on him quite a bit next Fall and let him execute more of the playbook. Depending on how comfortable he is, maybe even call his own audibles at the line. Either way, Peters has a big head start in knowing the offense.
December 8th, 2017 at 9:02 AM ^
I can't object at all to your second point, because those are facts that have nothing to do with talent level. Concerning your first point, I haven't looked at all of Patterson's interceptions last year, so I can't say for sure how "O'Korn-esque" they actually were. I would imagine there is a difference between trying to make a play and making an AWFUL read or doing both. I think the word gunslinger gets thrown around too much. From what I have seen of Patterson on film, his pocket presence and awareness look really good. Peters needs to improve this substantially in order to take the next step, this was part of the reason he was getting killed on those sacks.
December 8th, 2017 at 11:23 AM ^
Fair enough on my second point. I didn't stop and think about how many of those picks may truly be Patterson's fault, or if it was the receiver running the wrong route, a tipped pass, dropped ball, etc. If you made me guess, there's at least a little bit of everything. I also don't know how much these picks have to do with Ole Miss just generally trending downward this season and Patterson was doing what he could to make a play and keep a sinking ship afloat. I don't know.
The kid clearly has potential. I won't at all dispute that. But I hope he can just make smart decisions with the ball, run through his reads (god willing our OL can give him enough time to do that), and consistently put the ball in a position where his receivers can go make a play. How many frickin points did we leave off the board this year and last just watching Speight and O'Korn overthrow their receivers over and over and over? I can't expect any QB to hit their receivers on the numbers, in stride, every single time. But at least put the ball somewhere where your receiver has a chance to go make a play.
If he can do these things, he at least deserves a shot.

commits to Michigan, he will be the starter when Michigan plays Notre Dame. I know he will be competing against the other guys, I just think it's a lock. If I'm wrong about this (due to Patterson not being the best QB, not Patterson getting injured), I will host my own neg-bang. There is no way you take a transfer QB of this caliber and he doesn't start.

he's 20x better than the other guys. However, I do think he is better. Does that in any way mean that Peters is going to lose his job.....? NO. Peters will be in the drivers seat with a HUGE head start. It's put up or shutup time for BP, plain and simple.

Pass-heavy pro-style, but he's taken plenty of shutgun and under center snaps in HS. He's balanced and can pretty much adapt to anything outside of a true read-option offense.

Perhaps I am alone here but if he has to change the offense for a transfer how is that helping us long term? This team has no offensive identity right now and I am honestly tired of having a first year starter at QB every year, it gets us nowhere.
Patterson is a 1 and done by all indications. He may help win 2 more games than we would have this year but then we are in the same position the year after that.
The kid is talented but after watching film from several of his games he makes bad decisions and bad throws too often for my liking. Yes, I know Harbaugh knows way more than I will ever know about football.
Go ahead, kill me
December 8th, 2017 at 9:04 AM ^
I haven't seen Patterson since the Army all-star game. I remember thinking what a stud he was and how great it would be to have a QB like that. I don't agree with everyone thinking he's an automatic 1 and done.
Peters will grow a lot between now and next fall. It would be foolish to judge him on his limited time this year. I think Brandon gets downgraded for his personality which is somewhat unique for a QB. It also sounds like he's very smart and he has all the tools.
There is a reason Don Brown brought up McCaffrey in his late season interviews. Because he's going to be damn good.
I'm just thrilled the competition is Patterson vs. Peters vs. McCaffrey
instead of Speight vs O'Korn vs Morris
It's obvious Hoke left the QB cupboards bare.

They did a lot of shot gun, read-option looks, which they never ran the QB. I think that will be fine for Patterson, assuming he wins the #1 spot.

You want to pencil Shea in and Change the system. Your lack of faith in our current Quarterbacks is frustrating. Are you the individual who orders your food at a restraunt and complains when it takes longer than your Three Big Macs and a Diet coke to get to the counter?
Trust the process.
If you have listened to anything from the programs that continually produce winners, there is a systematic process in place at each one. Those who come into the program understand that, coaches who take jobs elsewhere take the process with them, and those who are clueless fantasize and jump to the next best thing not realizing that the grass is just as green on this side of the fence.
Peters, McC, and Shea (if he comes) will have one heck of a battle next year and they will be better because of it, Michigan will be better because of it, and all of the whinning will fall away.
Stay the course, trust the process....
Those who stay will be Champions!
