Interesting stat: Alabama and Georgia have two of the worst passing offenses in the country

that the difference between the no. 9 (Georgia for 9.0 yards) and no. 77 YPA (Michigan for 7.0 yards) stat is just 2.0 yards per attempt.
If M can just improve its YPA by just 1.0 measly YPA--from 7.0 to 8.0 (Alabama no. 35 at 8.0 YPA)--that would totally transform Michigan from a totally dysfunctional offense to a good enough offense to win the rest of the games, given the elite D.
If Michigan's passing game can just be mediocre (no. 35ish level) several things will happen: Sacks will drop (fewer 3rd and long with D blitzing), running game will be much better (PA pass will have to be respected, etc.), and they will also have the ability to sustain drives (like in 2016), control the clock, keep D rested, etc., etc., etc.
A virtuous cycle.
M is a lot closer to being a top 10 team than many realize-- just 1.0 YPA better and we are there!
Yet if O'Korn can't improve even just a little in the passing game, it won't happen (at least not this year).

Alabama missed out on repeating as national champions last year on literally the last play of the season. Do you really think it's because they beat the shit out of Arkansas in Week 6 and lulled themselves to sleep? That's nonsense.

They got credit, and still do for beating up on a shitty SEC. They didn't lose the lose game on the last play. They lost the game because they weren't as good as everyone propped them up to be. If they were so great, it wouldn't have come down to the last play. Who is the best team they have beaten in the last 2 years? So Cal to start last season off? Florida St to start this season off? Maybe Washington in the playoff? I'm not saying they aren't good, but playing against a bad conference (Big 2 little 8 days) makes those bowl games a little more difficult.

as pointed out below, this single metric doesn't tell you anything of value about the efficacy of those teams' passing games.
